Sadly, any swinginess must have evaporated by the time it neared deepest Norfolk, never reaching our boys' grammar school in '66. Was Swinging London really a thing, or just a publicity man's dream? The show's high production values ensured '60s life looked cool and pristine in that Avengers' fairyland, if you overlooked the many (weirdly bloodless) murders going on everywhere. Pity I'm an atheist as I'd so like to imagine Steed and Mrs Peel reunited at last.
They will still be showing The Avengers with Mrs Peel for decades to come , timeless and classic television series . RIP Diana , you were greatly loved and will be missed by millions.

John Steed and Emma Peel were as close to the synergy of 'the thin man' couple Nick and Nora Charles (Myna Loy and William Powell) as has ever come about. They were witty, and comfortable with each other. Peel was strong and Steed had class and a strange sense of humor.
I'm not sure we really watched for the plots. I think we just wanted to see the interaction between Stead and Peele. Also for the fantastically witty dialogue and obvious screen chemistry between the two leads.

the car is still registered with DVLA but remains untaxed. changed hands in 2013, probably in a lock up somewhere. or maybe on display in a museum. rigg was in the studio a lot and the elan was driven mostly by the stand in for outdoor scenes.

I LOVE the Lotus Elan! I bought one just because Mrs. Emma Peel drove one on "The Avengers." The car is so powerful, it got away from me twice - I am afraid to drive it! My cousin drives it to keep it in tune. It's a 1965 with only 10,000 original miles on it. I keep it super-clean and shiny and named it "Mrs. Peel." The producers went from a white one to a blue one when they went color and that first episode in color also had a FORD GT; From Venus with love (I think it was without engine though). I had a ride in a 1960s Elan in the 90s with friend on the 101 in LA and I cannot tell you how scary that experience was! First: he was an AWFUL driver, the car was a righty, and that car was tiny and I mean TINY! Then it stalled while we were in crazy fast traffic. Truly a horror show!

Considering they came out 60 years ago, the Elan was a wonder of car engineering. They could generate 1g cornering acceleration and, at the time, that was better than any other car - including Ferrari, Maserati,Jaguar etc. They were very small and light. Probably best not to be in an accident in an Elan but an amazing car, nonetheless.
Interesting part was, when she was hired to do The Avengers, she didn't/couldn't drive. So many of the early scenes with her and the Lotus, the car was pushed in an out of the frame by stagehands until she could drive it convincingly herself.

At the time, at least at the last part of the Avengers that Mrs Peel was on, I loved her, though she was a bit my senior. But she was sooo different from ANY other female actor, it was actress at that time. And she was sooo good at playing that part, Diana Riggs I mean. But that car! I'd just bought my first car, a 1964 Triumph Spitfire. It was in 1966 and I couldn't afford a Lotus Elan, so I made dew. I could go on about that show, and on and on ...
this show turned me on to the Elan... finally got one myself... it's as much fun in real life as it appears in the Avengers... and yes, they patterned the Miata after the 60s Elan
Emma Peel is gone now, but I do wonder about her Lotus. Anybody think it might have been preserved... or is it rusting away somewhere, long forgotten? By the way, I'm long past tired of 2020, and seeing people I grew up with or otherwise admire dying. In fact, this entire decade has pretty much sucked in that regard. Ah well... just part of getting older myself, I guess.
Guard Dog It was in a car museum in Keswick, Cumbria. I saw it there maybe 15/20 years ago. The collection was of famous cars from film, tv or just famous owners. Sadly it's been closed for a few years now. Many of the vehicles were sold on to US buyers. I've had a look at the list to see if the car was sold at the time of closer but it isn't listed, so the collector must have let it go at an earlier time. Hopefully some one with a passion for vintage cars of tv memorabilia has it now. But it was well cared for when I saw it.

I loved the Avengers. When I was in High school in 1965 The Lotus Elan was the car I wanted. They weren't practical cars-but I loved it.
Mazda bought two in England and brought them back to Japan, the Miata is their version of the "Peelmobile"

Interesting part was, when she was hired to do The Avengers, she didn't/couldn't drive. So many of the early scenes with her and the Lotus, the car was pushed in an out of the frame by stagehands until she could drive it convincingly herself.

At the time, at least at the last part of the Avengers that Mrs Peel was on, I loved her, though she was a bit my senior. But she was sooo different from ANY other female actor, it was actress at that time. And she was sooo good at playing that part, Diana Riggs I mean. But that car! I'd just bought my first car, a 1964 Triumph Spitfire. It was in 1966 and I couldn't afford a Lotus Elan, so I made dew. I could go on about that show, and on and on ...
I loved watching every single minute of these, they both worked so well together!

Guard Dog It was in a car museum in Keswick, Cumbria. I saw it there maybe 15/20 years ago. The collection was of famous cars from film, tv or just famous owners. Sadly it's been closed for a few years now. Many of the vehicles were sold on to US buyers. I've had a look at the list to see if the car was sold at the time of closer but it isn't listed, so the collector must have let it go at an earlier time. Hopefully some one with a passion for vintage cars of tv memorabilia has it now. But it was well cared for when I saw it.
The lotus was recently sold at the Silverstone auctions this year.
Mrs Peel was Boss. To this day i cannot understand why people think that women such as her were exploited or disadvantaged or treated unequally.
