    I think the biggest thing isn’t how accurate they are to what your actual v02 is, but their ability to replicate similar results so you can see how much you’ve improved or declined. A scale can be 10 lbs off but as long as it is consistent in how it’s measured you can tell if you’re losing weight or not. And I think your test has proved that. Thanks

    Really nice video. Question: what runs you did? (Distance - pace)

    I have used my apple watch for over a year and it is extremely consistent- I have raised from 47-52 over that time period. I am a mountaineer and runner and this number made sense and validated the effort I had put into training. I got it professionally done and my score was 34.... Has anyone else experienced such extreme discrepancy ? I hope the apple number is right lol, my ego is damaged

      You should use portable methods simply for the Incline in numbers, not the base.

      u need to use that number as baseline and check it’s increase and decrease

      i lol at what youve said 'my ego is damaged' i think we have the same problem. but its the opposite. im both cyclist and a runner. i have garmin cyclo computer (edge 830) and my HR is connected with a chest strap, my vo2 max in garmin for cycling is 61, while on my apple watch series 4, my vo2 max in running is 33. my ego is damaged too. haha. that is why i watched this video to get information if I really have a low vo2 problem with my running or its just my watch. I think I have a problem with my vo2 in running.

      @@johnpaulmcumagun7028 i had an Apple Watch and a garmin bike computer. Apple Watch shows ~50, garmin 830 says 69.
      Last month my Apple Watch started crashing on runs so I got a garmin 735 watch for the runs. It estimates my running VO2 max at 67.
      So… it seems like it might be a Garmin vs Apple thing for some people.

    I got very similar result, comparing AW vs Garmin on the same run. AW 40 vs Garmin 43.

    You could argue that variation is bigger on garmin since 43 can be as low as 42.5 and still display as 43 and 44 can be as high as 44.49 and still display as 44. So due to the lower resolution of garmin you get a variation of 1.99

  • @justinc8378
    @justinc8378 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You complained that Garmin didn't calculate VO2max when you're in a lower heart rate zone, but by definition the value is done while at a high heart rate/level of exertion.

    Also, question, what about the effect of logging hypertension medicines (beta and calcium blockers) in the health app... (I have been taking Losartan 50mg and Amlodipine 10m for about a year but I just log these medicines last week and my scores of VO2 max dropped from 42 to 36 (below average for 43 years old) ... should I rely on the new (and reduced) values? or should I erase that information to regain my usual VO2 Max values?

    • @RaymePastore
      @RaymePastore  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not sure how or if an app would take into account your medications. I dont think they do (or should)

    I've noticed Garmin is typically around 5 pts higher than my Apple Watch. My Garmin Fenix 6 stays in the low 50s whereas my AW Series 5 is normally in the high 40s. Do you think it has anything to do with the AW recording Vo2max during walking activities whereas Garmin only records during runs?

    • @RaymePastore
      @RaymePastore  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes if you arent getting vo2 from all the same workouts I would expect a difference.

    Thanks for this video--very informative. Question: why can't these algorithms calculate VO2 max when I'm on my cycle or rowing machine? Why only walking, running or hiking?

    • @RaymePastore
      @RaymePastore  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Garmin does cycling but you need a power meter. Labs use a treadmill so I would really like to see support for that especially as a user can calibrate their treadmill and watch to it (on garmin that is).

    I really wonder which is more accurate. Apple Watch has me 4.2 lower than garmin (or maybe 3.7 if garmin is rounding up?). Seems minor, but 5-10% differences are huge performance differences.

    • @RaymePastore
      @RaymePastore  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seems to vary by person - does one of the watches fit you better giving you a more accurate result? Does one of the algorithms work better with your body?

    • @alexrubin265
      @alexrubin265 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@RaymePastore both fit well, but the Apple Watch has given me a lot more inconsistencies over all data than garmin does. The Apple Watch is such a better smart watch, but not a great fitness watch for anything beyond very casual use, IMO.

    So rookie here with Apple Watch, how are you finding, seeing your Vo2? Garmin 6 always shows it, can’t find it on the AW?

    • @RaymePastore
      @RaymePastore  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you see it in the apple health app? It doesnt display on the watch itself.

  • @patrickduchesneau5040
    @patrickduchesneau5040 ปีที่แล้ว

    Garmin doesn’t show you the decimal because you don’t really need it. But they have it internal. If you want to see it ( 2 decimals!) link your account to Runalyse and you’ll see it there. But honestly, no one should get excited about seeing decimal point because it does not tell you any about the error margin, which by experience, totally engulf the use of the decimals anyway!

  • @zunnen4347

    From what I've seen these watches are pretty inaccurate anyway but the Apple Watch is probably more accurate because of the more advanced algorithms etc
