    Brett is one of my Top 5 favorite and respected wrestlers but it’s well known that Vince McMahon, Vince Russo, Jim Cornette had tried to come up with every outcome or situation of Brett losing the title to Shawn Michaels that Brett would’ve liked. Brett didn’t want to lose the championship. Especially to Shawn Michaels since they were fierce rivals in the ring and out of the ring. But that’s like Shawn not wanting Stone Cold to win the championship in 97’ if Shawn was threatening to leave. Vince & company gave Bret every opportunity for him to choose the outcome of how he would give the belt up. No one is above the company except for Vince McMahon, not even Brett Hart. It literally was, as it was outlined in the agreed upon legal terms of his contract that he limited creative control over his match finishes on his way out (specifically outcomes). There was plenty of time left in his contract to lose the belt at another time and place in December. He just didn’t want to put over Shawn because of his attitude. Shawn had a history of vacating belts and had been bragging publicly at the time that he jobs for no one. About a month earlier he screwed over Bret’s brother in law British Bulldog at a ppv called One Night Only in the UK. A match that BB dedicated to his dying sister. Shawn also successfully petitioned a change for the match finish of SS97 after being persuaded by HHH that the finish needed to change. Bret exercised contractual rights to fight back against Shawn. He even said that if Shawn put him over in November he would return the favour before leaving at the end of December.

      The point is Hart went on record saying he did not want to lose the belt at home on his last show since he was leaving for WCW in 4 months. So this "team player" concept is most definitely a lie
      As far as Vince he had 3 financial problems
      The bodybuilding league and all the money he put into Luger was a flop
      LUGER had shown up on WCW Nitro on its first episode THE DAY after he had taped for WWF. So that all had to be edited because WWF was pretaped
      The league was dead because he was going through the steroid trial and believed he may be going to jail
      Nitro was thoroughly kicking his butt in ratings and they really did not have much to compete with
      Medusa had previously shown up on Nitro with one of his belts and threw it in the trash (at the behest of Bischoff who was once again creatively destroying WWF and was pushing drama)
      Hall and Nash were already well into the nWo angle. Rude was working for both companies and may have been leaking info to Bischoff to exploit
      Vince didn't trust him and so he pulled the trigger.

    I think the only person that really won because of the Montreal screw job was Vince McMahon. He used this event to create his own character of Mr. McMahon, which led to his feud with Steve Austin. Brett, who was departing anyway, lost out on so much more because as much as he earned a huge contract, an injury due to the recklessness of his opponent from an organization as loose as WCW, cost him millions of more dollars had he stayed in WWE. Michaels was still paid too low, was not allowed to leave WWE, and yet stayed on contract but stayed home. Eric Bischoff screwed up the NWO faction, which then led to Vince McMahon’s sabotage when he sent that idiot Russo over to WCW, where the moron in such a short period of time destroyed that company forever.

    Bret's story has changed over the years. His reasons for not dropping the belt were well documented at the time as he had a literal documentary crew following him around. His reason, given at the time, was that he was granted creative control by his contract, and he didn't want to lose the belt in Canada.
    He said that he would turn the belt over on Raw (so that the would leave the WWF undefeated), but there was a real worry that he would conveniently 'forget' the belt at him, and show up with it at his premiere with WCW.
    His reasoning for not liking Shawn at the time wasn't that Shawn was a dick, but that he 'disapproved of his lifestyle' which was a homophobic dog whistle in the 90's.

      No one liked Shawn’s lifestyle because he was a pill addict and treated everyone like shit? Some of the creative guys thought he was gonna die young because he’d disappear and miss tapes doing drugs. Even undertaker mentions having issues with him around this, and you can probably find the story of when he was gonna knock Shawn out had he not done a finish correctly or dropped a title. Regardless of how you feel about Bret, saying Bret was using this as a homophobic dog whistle is just strange considering Shawn’s history of being a drug abusing asshole is really well known and self admitted by Shawn himself prior to him becoming a christian and achieving full sobriety.

    • @SupraJulie
      @SupraJulie 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@fracturedfukd9629 No one used the word 'life style' to describe being an asshole in the 90's, or even to describe drug use. Heck, Dustin Rhodes was drug addicted too, yet Brett had nice things to say about him since because Goldust was nothing like his character. He did that in the same interview in the same documentary as the made the 'lifestyle comment.' That interview was immediately before the Montreal match, and given as his reason for not wanting to drop the belt to Shawn.
      Even if he wasn't a homophobe, he still had one damn job, refused to do it, and has been bitching about it ever since.
