Cycle Touring "The Stans" Kazak, Uzbek and Tajik

- Follow me through this episode of cyclist vs. the desert. We (Theo, Sakir and I) cycled over 1800 kms / 1125miles through dry, extremely hot temperatures, relentless headwinds and not readily available water sources! It was an epic battle that we eventually won and came out on top or more or less exhausted haha.
Video entails:
- Ferry from Azerbaijan to Kazakhstan
- Cycling through the rolling steppe/desert of Kazakhstan
- Cycling through the unbearable desert of Uzbekistan
- Visiting Nukus, Bukhara and Samarkand, Uzbekistan
- Cycling into Tajikistan to Dushanbe via the Tunnel of Death
- Noticing the drastic change in scenery from Uzbekistan to
Tajikistan

Is it true you have to stay in a hotel every 3 days in order to get registered on the Uzbek tourist tracking system? Brilliant video!
I registered three times in a month in my hostels in Nukus, Bukhara and Samarkand. When I crossed the border to Tajikistan I just handed him the papers. I had lost several of them also. I don’t think it matters.

will be looking at doing something similar in 2023....how easy was it to sort the ferry across the Caspian sea? any other info worth knowing?
Sounds like a cool trip! By bicycle or backpacking? If it’s high season (summertime) than I think the wait shouldn’t be more than 1 or 2 days but winter is a completely different story. I’ve heard other cyclists tell me they’ve waited for up to 7-10 days!
@@plantpoweredcyclist7978 by bike... No idea when I'll be there... Plan to leave UK early 2023 and just go from there. Got visas etc to sort out to.
@@leethomas3772 Other than China, I think your visa situation should be good! I’d get that one before setting off!
@@plantpoweredcyclist7978 yes I hear you have to sort that visa out in home country before set off. think Ill skip Turkmenistan.....straight to Uzbekistan. Things may change by 2023.
@@716tommo Things will change on a daily basis especially when you start cycling! Don’t over plan! The best plan is to have no plan and be open to letting the open road and the people you meet be your guide!

@@plantpoweredcyclist7978 I'm staying home... for now.:-) But I had very active year... went to about 20 different races and events - triathlons, cycling brevets, ultra marathons, etc. Now dreaming and preparing for IronMan. You know... I'm enjoying the benefits of being vegan (thanks again!) - full of energy, healthy, strong, etc. :-) I hope I'll be able to do a cycle touring next year. Who knows... I may even meet you somewhere on the roads. :-) Be safe and have lot of great adventures ahead!

I don’t know when I’ll be back but I sure loved every minute of the rugged landscape and all the high 5s from the lovely people!
How did you survive on plants? Did you carry anything with you like rice etc? How often did you find somewhere to get food?
Hey! It was much easier than you think! Looking back there were major cities/towns to buy food every 3 to 5 days usually and also some kind of café every 50 to 100kms where we could get a meal of potatoes/onions/even a watermelon and the famous salad of central Ásia, which consists of one cucumber and tomato.
I always carry oatmeal, dried fruits,
make my own trail mix(a variety of nuts and seeds), pasta, lentils, buckwheat and a variety of spices. I'm not a big fan of rice, especially white rice as it's not good for you.
If you have other questions feel free to message me on instagram and I can give you more advice on eating if that's one of your concerns. I know it was for me before going there!
Did you have any problems to enter Azerbaijan after armenia?
I had a different approach than most people. When the guy asked me about Armenia I just spoke really fast as was really enthusiastic about it haha and then started talking about Azerbaijan and how excited I was to go there as well and all of his colleagues were staring at him and he asked the question about where I went in Armenia and I went off talking really fast and only saying good things about Armenia. I assumed he had no idea what I said and didn't want to look ignorant in front of his colleagues so he just stamped my passport and said welcome to Azerbaijan haha. Let me know what happens with you??
