So many artists are afraid of color, but not Sandi! If you want to learn how to really use color, you have to totally immerse yourself, be generous with the medium, and be bold enough to balance bright hues against one another. Well done!

Today is the day I’m going to stop feeling weird that I too write “colour notes” since forever on my sketches, as a reference for later use! ! And the coloured paper for backgrounds is just too good of a thing! Thanks Sandi!
Oh, yes: and the way you usually separate your sketchbook pages with transparent paper to stop smudge, reminds me of the drawing pads from 40 years ago I had in primary school, where ALL pages had thin transparent paper between them. All! When my picture wasn’t of the smudgy type, I’d remove the thin sheet to use it as tracing paper in some other type work. Fun!

If you need something that will not harm you and help your allergies, see if you can find some stinging nettle. It is a natural antihistamine. You can put it in a tea for or you can eat it cooked. It tastes similar to spinach when it's cooked. Blessings!!

I discovered your channel about a month ago via Kriksis' video that was inspired by your soft pastel works. It motivated me in turn to bust out my soft pastels, make a mess, and just play. I really appreciate the way you convey the joy of playing with art materials, not being "too precious" with them, and simply following your creativity, wherever the sources may lead. Watching while playing with an abstract portrait in my sketchbook. I checked out Sara Dyer… and still trying to figure out the style she and you are working in. You said your mom didn’t think a particular painting was in your usual style. I would love it if you did a “Sandi Hester 101” for those of us coming from different ways of painting… something like a blurb for an upcoming exhibition about your artistic vision and what you are chasing. I studied with Ardith Goodwin, and she was all about defining your signature style and vision of beautiful, but every artist is different in how they think about their work and whether they have defined a style. Whatever it is, your work keeps me coming back for more.

Dean Sandi, this is crazy inspirational, I love this! I want to try the colourful portraits so much! Would you be so kind to help me choose between Neocolor 2 or oil pastels? I’m afraid I can’t afford all at once. I love the thick texture and bright colours of oil pastels, but the possibility of working with water using Neocolor 2 also seems appealing. What would you recommend for starters? I would also anyways be buying a small 10-12 colours set, would you say it is enough? Thank you so much as always, I am tremendously enjoying your work and attitude, I would go as far as saying that you and my new inspiration for art helped me in battling my depression which I’ve been descending into since the beginning of russian invasion. Oh this is interesting because I've been watching another channel called Becky Cao and she goes to coffee houses and draws the people and then uses watercolor to paint it... but this reminds me of her drawings! I actually been inspired now by you both too go to places to draw people but up like your idea to time it! Thank you! Btw- love love love your art!!! I think my favorite is the one you glued together at the table!

Hi, i really love your work,. Changing the colour of the oil pastel line on a coloured background works so well. I found these figure and portraits captivating. They so beautifully observed. Oh, so much great work, i think I'll have to watch this video again!

I actually really love the tiger, even though you did it last and it looks less unfinished than the other animals! I'm in love with the concept of the people drawings. I was inspired by your video so much, I had to pull out an old watercolor sketchbook that had empty pages and started doodling some people that I found on pinterest with soft oil pastels.

I LOVE this page in your sketchbook. I have to say the little squirrel is my favorite critter. but oh my, all the color, composition is great! intuitive painting.. you got it going!
I just love all your videos. Your art is so happy making, and your instruction is so helpful and inspiring. I don’t watch the videos in order, sometimes I need a certain video at the right time, and sometimes I watch some more than once as. Is the case with this one, but I love them all. Thank your for posting all of these fantastic videos for public consumption.
I did love that animal spread, but I could see the "tightness" in the red panda. Still definitely you, but in your detailed mode. The tiger, chameleon, and the monkey next to the chameleon are my faves. I can just imagine that as some giant chair rail mural in your dining room. I am also hooked on those foldy-books. I started making them a couple of weeks ago and I cannot stop! 🤣
