The 158 may whine as well but I always love the whine on these with the Perkins engine roaring as well 😍! People seem to give the Class 165 and 166 Turbo trains comments as good as a rubbish bin but these are no way that at all - in fact I'm rather pleased they're staying for now I believe 🙂. The 166's are 5-6 years older than the oldest Class 168. Definitely a major improvement over the 150's in Bristol and the 158's - more seats for a start and larger doors plus better door layout which means greater punctuality. On November 5th nearly 6 months ago, after catching a 165 on the slightly late 16:29 from Didcot Parkway to Reading (around 10 minutes late) I decided on I think a 387 back - there was a Class 166 on platform 12 which was coupled to the rear (2-coach) 165, 19:22 stopping service to Oxford this was. Passengers were only allowed to board the 166 (probably so that the 165 could get back to the depot easily). Good plan using 3 instead of 2 coaches! After sitting in one of the almost back window table seats, I decided to move up to what was, the declassified First Class section (I asked the 2 members of staff on the train when / after I mentioned that this was a Standard Class service according to the time) - most certainly a comfortable trip free of charge. I was awkward and wanted to sit down the front of the train where possible. It was like the Quiet Coach experience on the XC HST's. In fact it felt rather spacious - probably as spacious as a Mark 1 coach. Definitely a 5th November to remember 😉! Great trains the Turbos are - a few or some of the 166's are about the same age as me: 27 🙂. Excellent video as well - I watched it quite a while back.
@The Bloxy Beast they operate between Sheffield-Bridlington (they go up to Scarborough on Sundays, and will go there Monday-Saturdays from December) although Northern have subbed them for 2 car 144s recently.
😂 When you see a class 166 crawl and howl in and out of a station with week acceleration you may think it's super slow. It's easy to forget that these little DMUs can do 90mph which even in this day and age is more than enough for a regional train. I kinda like this train. But nowadays it's high time for electrification on ALL STANDARD GAUGE ROUTES. Class 166 was a good train in its time but now it should make its final run into a museum, right? 😂😂
I think if any dmu that is efficient and decent should deserve to be a museum piece that can be active like preservation, for example of decency is the voith hydraulic transmission as it is used in a lot of our dmus and also these trains have their original engines which disentangle happen to much buses
I love the whine on these 😍, similar to a Class 158. Was the air-conditioning working on this train? Was this the middle carriage (I can hear the air-conditioning)? I wonder if the whine is part of the air-conditioning.
I don't think the tsw sound file does the engine justice and the acceleration seems slow to me. The real ones seem to pick up quicker after a slow start.

Sounds like a class 158, love the noise, used to be a regular on the Scarborough to Hull line
Yea... until Northern decided to roll out class 155's, class 150's, and a variety of Pacers.
They put 170s round there as well. Although it has got a lot more random with the stock allocations since Arriva took over the Northern franchise.
@@tomp6792 170s usually operate to sheffield. However, I have seen them to Hull.

17:59 Love the FGW HST my ultimate fan
Same
7:46 a class 66 loco in classical livery?
Nice video, shame this line isn't as nice as it used to be :(

Which a lot of buses don't have their original engines. But preserved ones have thy same type or similar engines

Mitchell Hurd same engine as a 158, and its most likely to be the air conditioning
Yes the whining and mechanical whirring is the air conditioning units at work. Each Class 166 sounds the air conditioning unit subtly differently
Anyone else enjoy running these in TSW?

nice video mate
Ngl dayum thats fast
