    Love watchin you guys, this is the second time watching this! Tip: If you suspect a vacuum leak around the carb or hoses, use your propane torch. Turn the valve on and walk the tip around the hose or base of the carb. The leak will draw in the propane and the engine idle will pick up and steady out. Now you know where to look for the leak. :)

    Chrysler had right hand threads on the lugs on the one side because it was thought to help reduce the risk of the lug nuts coming loose, since they would have to work against the way the wheel was turning. They ditched this sometime in the early 70s.

      Left hand threads were a big thing on most makers (Olds and Cadillac and Pontiac did it) in the 30's 40's and 50's but I had no idea anyone was still at it all the way into the 70's...

    • @brianhdueck3372
      @brianhdueck3372 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      actually the GMs listed had left thread into the 60’s... not that it matters but just saying it was more common practice than often realized. It got tricky sometimes when front brake drums got interchanged during a brake job. Yes I have run into that.

    What up JYD and TH! Super cool project this one! Cool tip: Look at the end of the lug stud at 6:11 in the video. The drivers side has an L. The pass side should have an R. I went through the exact same thing on a 59 Cadillac coupe Deville I bought 15 years ago. I was green and well and had no idea of the lug studs and threads being a different direction. I used pry bars, torque wrenches, extensions, I even bought a compressor and air impact to get them off. Like this car it was super rusty from Kansas. This was where I grew into big boy toys partly lol. Finally an old timer was over at my house looking at a 59 Ford F1 I was selling and we got to talking. He told me the same thing. I was able to get the wheels off that day after weeks of banging my head on the wall with it. Its so cool you guys are able to do this. I'm working on the same dream right now with my Cadillacs. Its just hard to find time for editing and I record myself so I am learning how to incorporate the actual work in the video. It'd be so cool for you guys to check my few videos out. I know I need a lot of improvement with material and stuff but I'm always doing similar projects like yours. Maybe we could collaborate some time? I live in NM and know where there are hundreds of RUST FREE jewels out here in the SW. YOU GUYS WOULD LOSE YOUR Sugar Honey Iced Tea! I promise. Plus NM has some of the best wilderness in the US. Lemme know guys. Keep up the good work 👌

    Nothing runs better after sitting for long periods of time than Mopars. I have no idea why. My mom had an '86 Ramcharger 360 Qjet and you could let it sit for a year or longer and you could walk up to it, no new battery or jump pack, and it would crank and fire on ancient gas every time. Ran fine. Had no parasitic drain so it didn't kill batteries when it sat. The thing was immortal. This Plymouth just proves my point.

    For those old brake drums I always just apply some penetrating oil to the center hub and then whack with the biggest soft-blow hammer I can find, around the edges of the drum TOWARDS the car. I hit one side then the other and work may way around and eventually it breaks loose but you can keep hitting it one side then the other and wobble it back and forth until it is loose enough to pull the rest of the way off. Works way better than a pry bar because prying in one location about the axis puts everything in a bind. Always worked for me. Don't be afraid to really whack it as hard as you can.

    It's obvious you don't think too highly of Mopar, but you've got to admit, that engine was engineered pretty well.

    I have a 68 Charger and I knew that the driver side wheel studs were left hand thread. I went to take the passenger front wheel off with an impact and broke the chrome lug nut clean off. I turned the next one backwards and it came right off. It turns out someone had done a brake job and put the rotors back on it on the wrong sides. They put the calipers on the wrong sides as well so the bleeders were on the bottom. That was some fine brake work I tell you!!! And yes, left handed threads on the left side of the car will help to resist loosening lug nuts. But it turned out to not be as helpful as Chrysler thought and was discontinued after the '70 model year.

    For next time, there's a REALLY easy way to get stuck drums off.
    Take a drill and drill out the back of the pin that holds the shoes to the backing plate. Sometimes, you can even just take a punch and punch it through the backing plate. With the shoes not held to the backing plate, everything just falls off loosely.

    • @ThunderHead289
      @ThunderHead289 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I may have been a little harsh on you guys, but what you have done for people that own the property is commendable. I am surprised you managed to get the car running but again you deserve credit for your ambition. That spacer for the 4 barrel carb on a 2 barrel intake was something alot of car guys did back in the 70's. That was a good idea! Once you get that car rolling, what are the plans for it? Do you intend to do a full restoration?

    It's funny they rip on Chrysler for left hand threds, but Ford did it first with the model A. Love these videos, keep them coming.

    For whatever reason, giving stuck on brake drums hits with a hammer right in between the lug studs has the best effect in my experience.

    Great series..I ran into the same wheel nut fiasco when I was 18 or so. Took twisting off all 5 studs before my dad told me what I was doing. Think he had a good laugh and I learned an unforgettable lesson

    My folks gave me an 80's chevy camper van with 125 thousand miles after college (1985).. I drove it for about 5 years and then gave it to a buddy @ about 200k. He drove it for another 45k and gave it someone I didn't know.. About 6 years later I saw the van in a local grocer parking lot. I waited for the owner to arrive and we had a chat about their beloved van that had 444,000 miles on it and was still going strong!

    Man I think every guy working on Mopars learns the same way. I had a 53 Desoto that used Bolts not nuts, of course reverse thread on drivers side. Replaced them with studs and left hand threads on all 4. The theory, which is bologna, is the rotation of the tire wood loosen the threads on the driver's side.

      I do agree it is bologna

    Man I'm impressed. That thing pulls great vacuum, and runs smooth as hell. Reminds me of my 81' F150 that sat for a long time. I was able to balance a nickel on the intake.

    You had the right idea if a nut was in the center of the axle it could work it's way loose. Being offset from the center doesn't totally eliminate the effect. It's still being accelerated rotationally but basically with a bunch of runout. So it will experience less pure rotation momentum transfer from axle acceleration than a centered nut, but it will still experience a percentage of it. Anyway the mass of the lugnuts is so small that even though the effect does exist it's never an issue and modern cars don't use left hand thread. You would have to have really heavy center knock offs or something to have to really worry about it.

    That's an impressive Milestone. I did not think you were going to get that running at all. At least in the beginning I thought it was going to end up being left right where it was.
