Just started watching, but I have to say that I'm so glad you don't use the grid system. I tried it, it took every last drop of enjoyment from drawing. I'm more comfortable free hand, but I've made mistakes, so I'll definitely try the center point, makes so much sense. Love your videos, they're helping me immensely.
Hi Patricia... I feel actually the same about the grid method. The freedom you have and connection is worth the effort. Try the quarter grid, it will help a little, but you feel joyous drawing. Thrilled you love my videos and are finding them helpful. Here is a link to one of my videos explaining the method... all the best th-cam.com/video/FTKiEgG6CVA/w-d-xo.html 🙏
THANK YOU Dave! ❤️ Quite apart from the brilliant tuition (which has been, and continues to be, invaluable), your delivery style is so calming and brings a state of relaxed tranquility which enables creativity. As soon as I am out of the red I will be signing up to your Patreon channel (🤞 any day now 🤞). Once again - thank you 🙂❤️
Hi Annabel, You are very welcome, thank you for the kind words, thrilled you find the videos calming... means a lot to me. Hope your finances improve soon... all the very best. 🙏🥰
Beautiful! 😍 Will watch your full-length eye tutorials on Patreon as soon as I get the chance 😊 (Hopefully I won’t be sitting waiting for this hospital appointment THAT long! 😂)
Hi Heather, hope all goes well with your hospital visit. Thrilled you enjoyed the video and looking forward to the in-depth video on Patreon... all the very best. 😊🙏
Hi Ruby... you are very welcome. I intend to keep producing free content on TH-cam as well as Exclusive content for £4 a month in Patreon. I love to share what I do with others 😊🙏
I’m wanting to do a very large portrait on pastlemat . Have you used pan pastels before for larger pictures ? If so have you any tips or advice ? Thanks 👍🏼
I just found your Chanel and I love it. I draw in graphite and soft pastels just for fun. I like realism and portraits and I really found your tips helpful, especially for pastels. Greetings from Croatia!
Thank you so much for your great feedback... much appreciated! Creating from the UK. Will be posting every week so please subscribe and hit the bell then you will not miss any. Kind regards Dave 🙏
Hi... thanks for letting me know my work has inspired you... means a lot to me.🙏 Thanks for the suggestion video... I will add it to my list of videos to do. 🙏🙏
It is well worth persevering with free hand. You see alot that use projectors... which we lose out on so much freedom by using that method and we become colour in artists rather than creating the whole thing. 😊🙏
Thanks for the comment and feedback Lynne... much appreciated. That's a great idea... will sort one out, I could do just a small section like one eye with wrinkles... would that work for you?
Hi Judy, If you are using pastel, I would suggest using white a Rembrandt stick as the pigment is intense then glaze pastel over the top... please check out my next video *how to draw a lacey top with pastels*, I go in depth with the technique that should work I reckon, all depends with what surface you work on though.
@@DavePortersArt Thank you so much! I will. 😊 Enjoying your videos and love your attitude about it all. ❤️ Have the Rembrandt pastels. This is on Hahnemühle Velour paper, but love the Clairfontaine pastelmat as well. Cheers!
If you want to keep the price down... just buy the primaries and complementary colours from the conti a paris brand and buy two white pencils a carbethello and a caran d ache... they will work.
@@Miss78Piggy the conti a Paris one are quaily pencils and really cheap but have awesome light fastness. 🙏 not used Derwent brand so can't really comment ☺
Hi Leila.... if you check out... how to draw the nose and how to draw wrinkles I have slowed things down and there is real time footage in them. thanks for the comment.
enjoyed the video, I have produced a close up realistic video on ow to draw an eye, check it out here... th-cam.com/video/Okz-XbSs5Ys/w-d-xo.html

Your works has been so inspiring.
Please can you do some works with square pastel chalk, I don't know how to manipulate it like you use your pencils

I agree, can't connect well on the subject if there is grids... freehand give you more feeling

And for the white of the eyes we use blue and orange!! I really want to learn about complimentary colours
Using complementary colours makes all the difference to how they look realistic Laurence. 😊🙏
Brilliant work. A quick question to yourself? How do you go about pricing your Pastel pencil portraits? & Can u make a living from it ?
Thanks Dave, I try but I can't seem to mix the color to get the skin tone right, I am doing a coloured person i watch you do boxer A J
Thanks for watching my video, keep persevering... that's the key 🙏💕
Definitely look forward to more videos, thankyou for this one very informative,
will you do one with aged skin at all?

Dave Porters Art yes that would be fabulous thank you, I’ve wanted to do a painting of someone who’s lived a good long life possibly my husband lol
lol... will sort a video out soon :-)
Would you have tips on the reflective bubbles on the surface of water (for example a flowing river)?

Wish Dave might use lighter colored paper since a grey pastel pencil is being used
Can you show us all with cheaper pencils as ones you use can not always be affordable to all.
