      They’ll probably get into them in the next episode but the Portuguese initially really liked them and helped them in wars against the Adal sultanate, but when they discovered both that Predator John wasn’t real and they were a different branch of Christianity, they declared them heretics and never dealt with them again.
      The only other power that dealt with them were the Ottomans who backed the Adal, so they were a regional power but the Horn of Africa wasn’t that important to most people besides the Ottomans who controlled the all important Red Sea trade routes to and from India, so their the only ones we see significant interaction with.

    That part about the Sabbath is significant. Ethiopia was keeping the Sabbath and not Sunday for years as it was separated from Rome and not influenced or controlled by the popes. To make themselves more aligned with Christian Europe, they started to embrace Sunday more. Even today, the Ethiopian Church still recognizes and keeps the Sabbath and refrains from eating unclean foods. However, there is more attention and importance given to Sunday as the country tries to be more like the west... It's getting to the point that my Ethiopian friends don't even realize this.

      They stayed in power up until a soviet backed revolution which set the country back decades, and politically even further because the TPLF, who despite being supposedly democratically elected ruled Ethiopia for 20 years up until the current prime Minister was elected despite representing Tigrayans who are about 7% of the population, were able to be in charge because they and the EPLF, who were in Eritrea which later became independent, were the main group that defeated the Derg (the communist government). The current civil war is between the TPLF, who are obviously pissed about being booted out of power, and pretty much the rest of the country, with a couple of other rebel groups who they may be allied with but if so only because they are both against the government not because they have anything actually in common.

      Also the would-be successors of Halie Selassie II, the last king and a member of the Solomonic dynasty, are still around today. They no longer rule the country even in name but many have returned from exile and they are still alive and can trace their descent all the way back to King Solomon (altho as these videos discussed, that lineage is contested, but it's very possible that it's true)

      Nobody cares for ya'll campfire tales. Adal is an Ethiopian muslim state founded by Hararis. Ahmed Gran* (Since it was Ethioians who gave him the title "left") was Harari and even considered an Arab at his time. He subjugated the Cushitic soomaalis and added them to his coalition army. Before that the only time soomaalis were ever mentioned in Ethiopian history is when they got crushed by the forces of Emperor Yeshaq.

    • @AMR_k400
      @AMR_k400 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It was hararis , amde tsion mentioned that harla occupied the lad from shewa to zeila , harla are southern ethio semitic speakers their descendants include harari,eastern gurage while the gafat and arggoba are closely related but not descended from them, they have typical ethiosemtic names like dil-gamis(the person who helped yekuno amlak defeat zagwe) , dilwanbera (wife of ahmed gragn) her name literally translates to "where victory resides" the first person noted to have used the name dil is the last axumite emperor dil naod so the origin of this name cant be debated even amharic has the word dil in its vocabulary.

      Ahmed Gragn is an Ethiopian Harrari that spoke an Ethio-Semitic language. The Adal Sultanate was founded by the Semitic Harari and Argobba; a people which claimed descend from Arabs, and not Cushitic Soomaalis. Adal leaders Abu Bakr and afterwards Ahmed Gran had to deal with nomadic Soomaali tribes constantly attacking their territory. These two rulers would go on to beat and then subjugate the soomaalis.
