As the creator of Steam once said, "Piracy isn't a pricing issue, it's a user experience issue.", and "The easiest way to stop piracy is not by putting antipiracy technology to work. It's by giving those people a service that's better than what they're receiving from the pirates."

      What a load of $hit.
I have no issues with people taking a stand against multi billion corporations, but let me remind people..
The piracy and torrenting during the PSP days were insane. !diots who are suddenly taking the moral high ground when in fact during the more Sony consumer friendly days of the PSP, the PSP was pirated like crazy, hence why support from third parties dried up, hence hurting the software sales.
The double standards is real. People will pirate irregardless of what Sony or these corporations do.
People pirate because they can, not because of morality and ownership issues. If anyone believes people pirate because of the aforementioned reasons are extremely deluded.
It says more about those people who pirate because it is convenient to do so rather than the system itself.

I said this 12 years ago when I first lost all the music I bought on iTunes because I swapped to android and couldn't access it. Then when consoles started selling games for $99 digital and $79 physical, plus if I didn't like the game I could only get refund for physical games (within 7days, no questions asked). When I finished it I could resell the physical copy for $20 less, but digital I was stuck with. It was ALWAYS an anti-consumer movement.

Filesharing is a pretty big benefit. Me on TH-cam having as big of a platform as the richest media companies is a pretty good benefit... All the news media in the world being corrupt but independent journalism showing the truth is a giant benefit... We might have half the population on the planet right now if there was no independent journalism. The pandemic was planned to kill way more people than it did. A dozen or so corrupt scientists were made to seem like that was scientific consensus while many thousands of doctors and experts were silenced on social media and mass media... Now independent journalists on TH-cam and rumble, substack, etc. have bigger audiences than any mass media news channels since the truth was so easily shown and proved that the mass news media to be completely untrustworthy to a deadly degree.

This is why I always go with physical video games if it's an option. If you love indie games, getting them on physical does cost a whole lot more, but at least you own them forever. With digital, there is always a chance that they'll take it away from you. That chance may be super slim most of the time, but even for the products that seem the safest of all, it's still probably only a matter of time before even those are taken from you. Times change, and nobody can predict the future. Your digital purchase may be there for 25 years, then one day you're informed that you'll no longer be able to access certain legacy products, and yours just happens to be on that list.

When it comes shows and stuff, I always have this thought process:
If it's within your means, buy the dvd/bluray version
If you can't afford the physical disc (because sometimes physical copies of full seasons of shows are absurdly expensive), then rip or screen record the shows.
If you're already paying for the streaming service, then you might as well record a local copy for yourself just in case.

A few years later I changed my PC and the game required online login to the server to authenticate my purchase, alas, the Atari store was no more! I managed to get hold of them though, and their answer was more or less "hard luck!" I was like, you gotta be kidding! Naturally, I had to hack my own game to make it work again! I remember when the eShop for the 3DS and Wii U was going down, some guy tried arguing with me "it's just time, not like anyone downloads anymore and buys from them anymore, we have the Switch eShop now so-" because yes, the Switch eShop definitely won't enter the same fate down the line. /s
The ONLY reason I feel semi-comfortable with downloading from the Switch eShop is because I try to back up anything I buy on it, off my hacked Switch. (Oh, that DLC is gone because the eShop went down for good? Glad I made a backup. Oh you own Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl but only have 1.0 for it physically, so it is missing post game content AND EVEN THE INTRO MOVIE OF THE GAME??? ... well hey, I dumped the latest update before they took the servers down, so I can enjoy it fully)
I don't even own a PS5 or Xbox Series console due to how bad I feel the market is getting for console games (have a good PC now and just use it, my Switch for any games requiring online for it, and my Steam Deck for Single Player Switch games and more) I'm most likely going to get Nintendo's next console, whenever that is, but will be leaving it alone until hackers hack the system because my trust in Nintendo has been at an all time low, and I'd rather have a way to back up my games in some regard if I get their next console.
Also with PC, at least besides pirating, you have places like GOG and Itchio that provide games you buy, WITHOUT DRM. (While I do like Steam in some cases, ease of access for the Steam Deck and really good sales... there are still some things that make me point to GOG and Itchio first if you want to *actually* own your games, without DRM attached to them, so you can back up the games and store them wherever you want... almost as good as physical media for PC since you can make as many copies as you want and store them wherever)
Would still love a way to get physical games for PC though, but don't see that coming back sadly :/ (I feel like these days if companies do a "one time deal with physical" they store them in a USB drive and not even on disk... as good example being Rivals 2's kickstarter currently, their "physical copy" (that only works locally) is saved via USB drive, *not* on disk)

Welcome to the club Brother. Honestly, in many scenarios, it's actually more ethical to pirate your media. HBO Max recently, and for much the same reason, removed a ton of content with the Discovery merger. And many animated shows were not only pulled from it, but they scrubbed from the whole internet. Thousands of hours of animators work, not even available to buy. In 10 years, it may not even be easy to pirate them. They'll be lost to time for all but the most dedicated of animation fans.

I think the "digtial age" will reach a peak and then people will crave physical media more than digital. Also crave for stuff made by a person rather than an AI and will pay good money to get such products. Creativity is the base line for human emotions. Might be a future where companies like Disney just fall off naturally. With their IPs going cheap and bought up by companies making physical products.

It is copyright infringement because of an agreement not to duplicate but I can't see it being anything other than that. Why is Rich still generalising by saying constantly that all game discs are just coasters without acknowledging that PlayStation discs for the most part contain a full playable version of the game without internet? Yes there's updates and yes without them it can get a little buggy but also its worth mentioning that people can now download the updates to their PCs from other sources and install them into their PlayStations via USB without ever needing to rub with PSN at all.

The only way we hold corporations accountable is by requiring them to justify the cost of their services with security, availability, and customer guarantees. When corporations think "ownership" of intelectual propery entitles them to take advantage of their consumers, that's when consumers need to hold them accountable and not tolerate bad systems and services.

I know this was about PlayStation, but relating to the generalized topic; this is why I purchase games from GOG when I have a choice. They’re the only company that I know of who’s entire mission statement is making sure that their customers actually own their games. No other company is doing that(that I know of at least). Anything you buy from GOG has zero DRM, which means I can be hold up in a watchtower with no internet for 50 years, and if I have a computer with GOG games installed, they’ll run. If I tried that with Steam, PlayStation or any other platform, I’d need an internet connection so they can peek in and check to see if I own what I’m trying to run. That isn’t ownership.

Pretty much all of them had no problem eventually paying for an old movie they had on dvd or Blu-ray just for the sake of adding it to their digital collection for convenience. This same mindset translates to any platform. People used to think digital content and copies are the future, but it’s just a matter of time before all of those companies do stuff like this. A lot of new movies are starting to become exclusive on streaming platforms, so no physical copies are made. You are forced to pay a subscription to stream it and there’s no guarantee it will be around in the future. Digital ownership is gone. Streaming is the new future. I lived in South Korea as a foreigner for 6 years... One of the things I miss about that country is that over there digital piracy is PERFECTLY LEGAL...
For one thing they do NOT and NEVER will recognize intellectual property in there court of law. This is due to a Asian concept that states that "nobody can own knowledge". And their laws reflect this concept!!!
When I was over there it was impossible to even find a movie that wasn't pirated because they didn't sell them... If you tried to sell a "official" movie disk you would be laughed out of the market because it's too expensive... Because keep in mind that these pirates are downloading the movie basically for free so they can sell it for dirt cheap and still make a profit...

People should get together and file a class action lawsuit against these companies for false advertising, theft and whatever else they can think of. At the very least, it should be illegal for them to use the word "purchase" in regard to digital content that isn't DRM free.
I've said for years that it's complete bullshit that companies are able to get away with stuff in regard to digital content that would never fly in the real world. Read any software EULA and you'll find a clause saying that they don't guarantee that the software will even work, and that they're not liable for any damage it may cause. Now apply that to a physical product, like a car. Do you think car companies would be able to get away with selling cars that aren't even guaranteed to work, and if they injure or kill someone due to design defects, the company isn't liable?
This sort of crap should be illegal!

I really appreciate your videos Rich, but the companies themselves are not the only problem, its because of people that are okay with companies doing anti-consumer stuff, that big corporations keep getting away with it, because there will always be fools falling into these traps, since a lot of people nowadays do not really value their purchases or are just indifferent to it. I used to play a lot of online MMOs and even some gacha games on my mobile devices such as phone or tablet, but when I saw that even as I supported these games by paying for microtransactions or battlepasses or whatever it was that they offered, that it didn't stop the developers or publishers from basically just shutting down the games, and I started losing all that time and money that was invested into those games, because these companies do not care that you can no longer enjoy yourself with their games, they just say "Sorry suckers, but thank you for letting us rip you off", and then when you actually try to fight these companies for ripping you off, some people actually have the audacity to defend these companies that are continuously ripping them off, and then actually call you entitled for basically trying to get these companies to compensate you, for not even giving you an offline version of the games that you were paying for online, or in the very rare occasions that they do make an offline version of the game kind of like Megaman X Dive, companies like Capcom actually were greedy enough to ask for $35, after they shut down and ripped people off from the Online version of the game that they closed off. I wish that people had similar mindsets nowadays, like the folks from 80s where when they were being ripped off by companies in the United States, for selling cheapass consoles with no sort of quality control, a lot of people in that era just stopped purchasing games or consoles for a long period of time, and the videogame crash happened because people were sick and tired of being ripped off, and although a lot of companies went under, it actually forced companies like Nintendo to create some sort of quality control, so that they could gain peoples trust as they were entering the market for the US, but for some reason people did not learn from this event and have created fandoms and stuff, where they support companies like Gamefreak for selling them poor under developed stuff, and its why these companies will not stop and the future of gaming and media looks kind of bleak.
For movies since I do not like the current streaming platforms, my family and I buy our movies and series physically and then convert it into a digital form factor, so that we can use Plex to enjoy our physical content in a digital form factor that can be accessed from anywhere, its a real pity though that the same cannot really be done for gaming unless you use emulation, and then you have a ton of issues to work with like compatibility problems, or have to deal with things such as latency if you decide to use Parsec or Sunshine or whatever, so I really wish that there were more options for us.
