Pradeep was given the most difficult songs of Amaradewa, Kasun Kalhara etc.and Surendra was given the songs which he can very well sing, like songs of Jothipala. Can Surendra sing songs of Amaradewa and Kasunn Kalhara? I doubt!
My question is can Amaradeva sing the songs Jothipala sang ? ( with all due respect to the maestro ) he cannot. He himself had said that he cannot sing the way Jothi sang. He can sing only slow tempo classics, never the great variety that Jothipala sang. Can you even compare the different voice colours and emotion singing of Jothipala with the songs of master Amaradeva, who rendered the same static voice for all his songs? ( no disrespect to the master) Can he sing fast numbers??? Not at all. And he was smart enough to avoid venturing into melodies he could not handle. Jothi could not care less about the melodies, he was able to handle any melody with such ease, and that makes the listener think they were easy songs to sing ! On the contrary some of the film songs composed by the 2 Saraths ( Dasanayake and De Alwis) were the most intricate with such sweet and subtle variations, which Jothi alone could have sung. The only reason why people compare the 2 singers is because Jothi never studied music, and was not conferred a Visharada title ! To bring Kasun to the equation is a non starter. I have seen and heard how much Kasun struggles to sing Jothi songs and ruins them in the process. Kasun sings his own songs very well, no doubt.
