I think the idea of him being held back more. With the calendar of the one school date being on a Sunday, the creators probably just chose a random date without looking at a future calendar to fact check it
Terry used to be a criminal so he probably got held back or even suspended a lot.
Here in Ontario, Canada, we had a system known variably as "Grade 13" and "Ontario Academic Credits" between 1921 and 2003. It was a semi-optional fifth year of high school designed to allow students to be better-prepared for entering post-secondary education. While you could wrap up your high school career at the end of grade 12, it was pretty common to stick out all five years.
In a city like Gotham, I could see such a system being instituted. Even if it was limited to high-achieving students, perhaps partly funded by Gotham's billionaires. If Terry didn't have the marks for it, Bruce probably still had enough clout to arrange for him to attend regardless.
So there are still some potential answers for why Terry might still have been in high school when he's 18/19.

Terry definitely seems like the kind of student that would be held back at some point in his life.
Depending on his birthday, he might have started a year later, then been held back.
I personally know at least three people who were held back in their formative years. Add to this that Terry was in Juvie for three months, and how often his night job affects everything else, and the extra year seems like an inevitability.
PS: What effect would his parents' divorce have on his schooling? Especially if he was only thirteen or so? That's a pretty serious trauma.
I think it’s a combo of things. When he told Bruce u started training me when I was 16, that can be a memory laps because who remembers exactly what age they were doing certain things mainly 15 years later. Then juvenile hall are bad places and he could’ve went without school in there for awhile making him be left back a year or two.
lmao I cracked up when you threw shade at nerdist. I remember that video, I even commented on it saying they didn't need to have spoiled it.
Other explanation: Terry’s activities as Batman have interfered with his schooling; as he isn’t as smart as Tim or Dick, his grades have correspondingly suffered.
We know Terry skips class quite a bit when he needs to do Batman things and when he is in class he sometimes falls asleep in it missing the lesson. He also spends a lot of his free time patrolling and fighting villains so it’s safe to say he might not always be doing his homework. So when takes tests and finals he will not understand some of the things because he was either sleeping or missing class most of the time and he is probably handing in homework late or doesn’t do good on it. So he might just have been held back a year like you said, still doesn’t explain was Max is still there too

I like the more elegant solution that he got held back a year from juvie but also crime fighting is probably not great for your schooling (given that there isn't much time for homework) which could even explain why he might at school on Sunday perhaps he has a tutor or in the future there are in school tutoring systems to prevent students from getting too far behind.
Maybe Terry started Kindergarten at age 6 instead of 5? I've known kids who did this.
In kindergarten, I met the academic requirements for 1st grade. However it was suggested I be held back as I didn't necessarily....adapt to the structure. This resulted in me graduation HS at 19. A few of my friends were at that age as well. It's 100% normal
I think what makes the most sense is that he got held back because he was in juvie. Some classmates of mine that went to jail/juvie/alternative education got held back a year/had their graduations delayed.

with the current push for Year Round Schooling (not really a push, but a back burner theory/idea for a good 20 years now) and the Increased Value (whether 4 year or two year) of a College Degree (to the point of being virtually ubiquitous) it's not wholly out of the question that High Schools would add 'extended years' on the back end as a 'bridge'
arguably the trend the last 10-15 years has been for 'Accelerated' Seniors & Juniors to be able to take College Level courses from High School (whether via remote learning, or actually attending class if close enough) this Blurs the line between 'High School and College Aged' already and with the Idea of 'Free College' getting traction with certain politicians, Modern Day High Schools could easily get into the Post-secondary Game (if the Money's coming from the same source) and offer Proper College Course on-site as a 'Grade 12+'

Thanks for another Vanishing Point video! I love these, you make me laugh easily. About Terry's graduating and his age in that point, I think it would be quite understandable if the school system were different AND also that he had held back for a year. And if you wouldn't go crazy and analyze all these things, I wouldn't have these awesome videos to watch so thank you again! 💞

When they said Zeta went rogue "6 days ago" it could have been either a slight mistake or an approximation? So it could have been the 10th or 12th.
Also notice how it said August? Normally school doesn't start until at least August 20th.
Seems kinda odd.
When constructing the timeline, it’s imperative that we take references of time passing or dates as literally as possible. Otherwise the entire thing becomes “well maybe this person misremembered, maybe this was a guess,” etc. which makes everything impossible.

Because School normally starts either on the last week of August or on the first week of September but never before.

@@Mudkip971 20 years ago any School starting before Labor Day was 'blasphemy'... so it's not impossible to see the start date creep further into summer (especially as farms become more Industrial, and the Summers off so farm kids can work the farm become more rare)
he could have been held back due to incarceration not giving graduation worthy schooling. Or a deal was made after his release to allow him to return to the same school district as long as he repeated the year. This is something usually done with school districts that have a correctional school as a in between for those out of juvie. It is also common in inner city schools as it is easier for an unfortunate youth to repeat a year than to go to another district or states school.

I'm sure somebody mentioned this but you are wrong about the time line for "speedy trials" (which normal must be asked for) depending on the jurisdiction a speedy could take months and months. Generally it's based on terms of court, guessing statue you ref is federal, point is more flexibility on timeline there. Good video
you have waaay too much time on your hands ...but so do I because Id do the same thing. And I watched this lol. Keep up the good work.
My mother told me that when it came to her and her siblings they had to wait until they were a certain age to start kindergarten. So what that means is they started school a little later than the other kids because most of thier birthdays were in the winter. So Terry could have had to start school a little bit later as a kid plus his time in juvie probably extended his time in highschool. Plus being Batman might have taken a tow on his grades. He's smart but some grades were probably no longer just A's and now maybe a few B's. I don't know. His job was more demanding than a after school job.
I think Terry getting held back in school makes sense. If not for his time in juvie, then simply for the fact that he was shown struggling in school due to his duties as Batman, so he likely failed a grade.
Still, I feel this video raised more questions than it answered.
OH GOD I'VE MISSED THIS
In Canada we have the option to repeat grade 12 after we've graduated. Perhaps this was introduced in the future of the D.C.A.U.'s version of the U.S.A.

It let's you get experience in different fields you haven't covered. In some schools (such as the one I attended) biology and chemistry swapped years for example. We didn't have enough students to fill each every year, nor did we have enough teachers to teach them. Some classes fill quickly as well (communications technology or co-op for an example).
a couple of Personal Anecdotes...
- When I was a wee lad School policy was that all Kids be X years old by 09/XX/19XX to start Kindergarten
- - My B-day was less than a week later... as such when my Senior Year Rolled around, I turned 18 on the 2nd Day of Classes
- Junior Year our school added 'Remote Learning' a Live Feed of limited classes at the the local University
- - 10 years later my nephew at the same school had the Option of his entire Senior Course Load (save for PE and one other Class IIRC) being College Level, with credits applying 1:1 at said University ... so if it all worked out in theory had he attended a 4 year College he'd have walked on Campus as a Credited Sophomore
- Once Upon a Time School was 1-room building with grades 1-6
- - eventually Grades 7 & 8 were added and Grades started to be sorted by age
- - - Then came 'High School' with 9-12 and from what I understand these were Optional at first
- - - - Eventually K-12 became Standard with a HS Diploma being the Benchmark... and now were at a Stage were a Degree of some form ( 4 year OR Trade school) is the new mandate..
That is all in the last 90 years (My Father started in one of those 1-Room Schools and Graduated the 8th Grade... eventually going to the Tech College for Specific Classes as an Adult)
who's to say what might change in the next 20 years for Reality to catch up to the dates cited... or even 40+ if you apply Timm's "always XX years away"
- would it be out of the question for additional "Grades" to be added to "high school" yet again... to say nothing of, with the advances of the internet and "distance Learning" why would traditional "High School" as we know it even exist in anything resembling it's current form

Ur math seems to check out fine Mattie as I read somewhere a long time ago that terry’s birthday is August 2023. This date seems to correlate with your approximate ages from rebirth to return of the joker
We’ve seen that before too but have never been able to track down its origin.
In Batman Arkham Knight the description of the Batman Beyond suit says : 2039 style so there's another date for Batman Beyond I think
I like how he uses a future calendar to determine that Terry would have been in school on a Sunday, but neglects to mention the fact that it's the month of August, in which there shouldn't be school anyway. Also, maybe there's a grade 13 in the future. Or maybe he just didn't get all the credits he needed by the end of grade 12, or wanted to get his marks up. I know plenty of people who did a fifth year in high school just to try to get into a better College or something. Him graduating at 19 really isn't all that weird.

He’d have to be held back two years seeing as he’s 19 at high school and his birthday is apparently in august after school is already finished. If he’s held back just one year he’d be 18 at the end due to his birthday placement. Literally, if his birthday was after September 1st or before school ends this would’ve been fine but I don’t know how you account for the other missing year unless being in juvie for those 3 months held him back two years. I can’t say I know how the juvie system works in my country let alone America or the future
We don’t have any clue where that August birthday comes from, it’s never been stated in the series

So if Terry McGinnis is 16 years old in 2039 and 19 years old in 2042 (end of the show), that means he was born in the year 2023..... which was last year.. (which also means he would've been 31 years old in 2054)
this was very fascinating but the real explanation is probably that the show writers were bad at syncing up dates and ages and just wrote in whatevr suited their story at the time. But I love the analysis vid

Considering that we make changes to the school system in the current day, it seems likely that the schools of the future would work differently than now. Of course, I can also see Terry being held back from being in juvie. Why not both?

It's a miracle that, after all the unintentional rough family life bits and the juvie nonsense, Terry ended up a worthy successor to the enigmatic yet skilled Bruce Wayne in the very end.
Terry being held back makes sense to me, but last I checked Max was a stellar student, so why would she be held back? Unless I'm remembering the series wrong, maybe the school system working differently in the future is the answer.
Alternatively, she is a grade ahead of him. In the clip used in the video they appear to have been on break, so possibly the school system in the universe of the show has six grades in high school rather than four, allowing Terry to still be one year behind Max and still able to hang out on break. The way my high school did it, a lot of the classes mixed grades, like in my junior year math class there were a couple seniors.
The real problem for me is that in Epilogue it seems that Terry was conceived before Bruce retired as Batman, which doesn't jive with the dates given in the first episode of Beyond.
What gave you that impression? We see the DNA collected while Bruce is still in his JL costume, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t keep it in storage for years and years.
@@dcauwatchtower That's true, but why keep it in storage? It isn't as if they had to wait for the technology to catch up with their plans, Cadmus was already cloning full people in JLU. If the whole purpose is to ensure that there's always a Batman, why wait until after he's already retired to conceive the child, leaving Gotham without a Batman for 20 years?

@@mattiesavannahpahl9934 I've corroborated a couple of sites now and August 18th is generally accepted (from what I gather) but I'm guessing unless you directly ask the creative team the world may never know (and even then they'd probably pull some off-the-wall date to get us fans to shut-up.)

I think that batman and Harley Quinn is a movie inside Harley Quinn mind because of batman and nightwing not acting like themselves . it makes sense to me and the people who made this movie mean to let you think that . I don't think that Kevin Conroy and the voice of nightwing want to do that movie along with Bruce timm and Terry McGinnis might have been 16 but,Bruce timm might have to tell the people who made the batman beyond book that fact but then again that is the problem with memory even though young people have that too ,I am young man and I still forget some things .
They really don’t do anything too out of character, and even if they did, that’s personal opinion vs marketing, news outlets, and producers deeming it canon.

I took an extra year, it's called a "victory lap". You can't stay in high school indefinitely just the one, it's mainly to get credits in certain courses for college/university.
