  • In this video, Daiwa Alphas AIR TW: BFS Trout Fishing Review, Hobie-Wan Kenobi shares some on the water impressions of the Daiwa Alphas AIR TW. Casting in a wide variety of settings, Hobie-Wan Kenobi showcases the capabilities of the Alphas AIR TW and also catches some nice brook trout along the way.
    The Alphas AIR TW is a great all around BFS reel. I would rival it with the Shimano Aldebaran BFS with Avail 16ALD15 spool. The Alphas AIR TW has become my favorite BFS reel. I have a Roro Shallow BFS Spool on the way. That spool weighs 4.5 gr with bearing!!!!
    8.6 Gear Ratio
    160gr (5.64oz)
    8lb-45m
    80mm handle
    28mm spool
    TWS (T-Wing System)
    Zero Adjuster Knob
    6+1 Bearing
    Saltwater Safe
    ALPHAS is finally reborn with the TWS system. Equipped with a small-diameter φ28mm G1 duralumin AIR spool to achieve a new level of finesse performance. Not only the bass, but also the trout in the mountain stream, as well as the salt compatible specification that enables the bait finesse game in the salt. The body was constructed with a full aluminum housing and was developed for various light game fishing.
    The Daiwa Alphas AIR TW was released in May 2020.

    Easiest place to get an Alphas AIR TW is from Japan Tackle. Jun (the owner) is a great guy to work with and will go above and beyond to satisfy customers.

    Informative video of new BFS reel and good quality video of BFS fishing. Rod looks also good for this kind of fishing. Rod and reel seems effortless casting this little crankbait. Nice film.

      Glad you enjoyed it! I think the Alphas AIR TW is a great BFS option. Took it out a few times for bigger trout and bass...works well there too.

    nice video. i've been useing alphas air tw with roro spool recently. i use a full glass fiber trout rod for casting light hard bait and mini spoon...that is pretty good!

      Do you find the Roro spool to pitch as free as the stock spool? I know it will cast good, just worried about the fixed inductor having too much brake when pitching light lures.

    Great video...I had steez air for couple months and sold it, this reel in my opinion is better than steez air....took mine apart greased it with ZPI grease, added 6 bearings, 4 on handle and 2 on levelwind and it is definitely smoother than steez air and feels more solid

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used a Steez AIR for a while. I wasnt impressed with the non-casting performance. Retrieve wasnt all that smooth. Cosmetics are whack...and that price tag. This Alphas is the top dog so far. I hope this Alphas AIR TW starts up an "arms race" with Shimano and Abu Garica to top it. What size bearings did you need for the upgrades?

    • @mikebor11
      @mikebor11 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same here, I have steez CT and was expecting steez air to be on the same level but it was not....bearings are same size for knobs and levelwind 4x7x2.5

    what's the reel to get for mountain stream trout today?

  • @sgtpavlov
    @sgtpavlov 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Nice, I was going to order this reel a few days ago, but when I went to order it, some stupid bank security measure tripped, and I had to iron it out with my bank. By the time that was done, the place I was going to order it from was sold out. It was someone on youtube, and they had a number of them for a good price. I'll have to get this reel some other time. Meanwhile I've got the conquest BFS to play with, as well as some other reels. I can cast a trout magnet on that reel with the stock spool even. I have the same size and color count down, and I put a single hook on it too. Right now I have the conquest on a kuying teton ttc 5'2 super ultralight rod. Haven't cast it on that rod yet. When I got that reel, I got a Majorcraft Troutino 4'10" UL for it, and landed some fish on it. Fun stuff.

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A TH-camr had a stockpile of Alphas AIR TWs? I am curious how the Teton SUL is with the CD-1. The Conquest BFS looks nice but, I dont think I could get into it. The butter smooth retrieve and refinement comes at a big weight and profile disadvantage. Many people really like the reel.

    • @sgtpavlov
      @sgtpavlov 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HobieWanKenobi damnit I meant to say ebay not youtube. sorry about that. The weight of the conquest doesn't really bother me at all. I have used the tatula ct with a diy spool before, and that weighs around the same as the conquest. Yeah the profile on it is a bit different and a bit higher than non-round reels. I have been wanting a round reel for bait finesse for awhile before I got the conquest. I have cast the SUL with other reels before, and it's a bit different than using other rods. You have to adjust your release while casting for sure.

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really like my XUL rod I have been using for a few years. It is a different casting motion but, the rod is fantastic and really gives smaller trout a fighting chance hahaha.

    Hobie-Wan,
    Nice video. Moving to single hooks because of you and Saito. I have not trout fished for a long time, want to do some this season and those small Rapalas were a favorite. I have boxes of them. What size hook do you use and are you using only a tail hook or a belly and tail hook. You had feathers on your tail hook, what brand are you using?

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Single hooks keep the fish pinned still and, keep the fish safer. Coming through snags is a lot easier too. Allows me to fish areas I wouldnt dare with treble hooks. The lure I was using is the Rapala CD-1, only has 1 hook slot. I use an Owner SBL-37M #10. I got the hooks and the reel from Japan Tackle. The hooks are 3 dollars for 12. Cheapest place to find them. Prices being in USD helps not to have to pay a conversion fee with Paypal or whatever.

    • @telemarkmann6870

      Hobie-Wan,
      $26.78 in shipping. Do you personally get a special deal or do they give a break if your order is over a $ limit? I want some #8 and #10. I can get up to #6 from TW for $3.49 a pack of 5/7 depending on size.

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually combine my purchases to make it more worthwhile. I think there may be a few different shipping options. I know that COVID kinda screwed shipping from overseas up a little. I do not get any sort of special shipping rates. I think #6 would be too big for most of the smaller trout baits. Barblesss is nice too.

    I'd like to know how did the drag performs on this reel.
    I've heard lots of positive reviews for this new 2020 Alphas Air TW. Not sure if comparing that with flagship Steez Air is fair, specially when Steez costs around 200 bucks more!
    the only thing about this new Alphas is that it is made in Thailand! I suppose that is just a cost reduction measure to keep its price competitive. I believe using a lighter mono, like 2-4 lb, would make this reel perform better and fishing more enjoyable! :)
    Thanks for your efforts and contents produced!

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The drag is actually really good. I have caught a few surprise fish when on the lake chasing bluegills. I caught a big rainbow trout, some pike and a few nice bass. The drag is smooth and starts up without any shuttering or hesitation. I do miss the clicking sound when line is getting pulled out.
      As far as the Steez AIR, I would pick the Alphas AIR TW over it every time. It is smoother, casts about the same AND...is about 250 dollars cheaper.

    • @kamarte
      @kamarte 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HobieWanKenobi Thanks! To my experience, a good drag should work smoothly specially on high and low settings, alike.
      I believe Daiwa did surprise everyone with release of this 20 Alphas.
      Other than lack of clicking sound on drag as you mentioned, which is a bummer! , I would concur that almost an ounce heavier than Steez Air, but couple of hundred bucks cheaper would be a great choice for many BFS anglers to consider while upgrading their arsenal ...

      I would pick the Alphas AIR TW. I have not fished the Aledebaran with a stock spool in a while but, comparing to the Avail 16ALD15 spool, I would take the Alphas AIR TW. Both a great reels and cant go worng with either. The Alphas just has more performance per dollar.
      The rod is solid carbon from joint to tip. The joint is right above the reel seat.

      I really like the SS AIR. I would choose the Alphas AIR TW though...at least for the smaller lures. Finesse bass lures, probably the SS AIR just for the speed and casting with "heavier" lures. Both are good reels, the Alphas AIR TW is just amazing with stream fishing so far.

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on what weights you are throwing. For super light lures, you will want to use a light braid with it. Just dont put a lot of pressure on the spool (like pulling out snags with the reel and such). Grab your line with your hand then lightly pull the snag out. I have 4lb Tatsu on mine right now. It is good line but, I wouldnt buy it unless it is on sale. I have used 4lb Sniper with great success as well as Abrazex. 3lb Sufix Nanobraid with 4lb leader is a good choice.
