  • In this video I unbox the new Sky Q set top box TV system. Sky Q is a 4K Ultra HD ready satellite and Internet TV service from Sky, comprising the Sky Q Silver receiver and the Sky Q Mini box.
Sky Q represents the biggest leap technology advance from the UK broadcaster since the launch of Sky+ a decade ago. It introduces the concept of Fluid Viewing, which means you can watch your recordings on any connected device. I take a closer look at each box, and peer behind some of its covered inputs.
The Sky Q TV System unboxed…
Sky Q is an entirely new premium pay TV platform from UK Pay TV provider Sky. It combines regular satellite Sky channels with downloadable catch-up and Video On Demand, as well as network streaming.
0.29: At the heart of the system is the Sky Q Silver receiver. I asked Sky Q Director of Product Planning and Design Andrew Olson what Q stood for. He said it stands for nothing, it just sounds cool. Well that’s fair enough.
0.40: Like Sky+, the Silver box is a PVR/DVR and has a 2TB hard drive. With 300GB reserved by Sky for push content, 1.7TB is available for personal recordings.
As you can see it’s very slim and has a shiny silver trim. The Q logo glows blue, and there is a WPS button for connecting Sky routers and Sky Q Mini boxes.
The viewing card slot is on the side.
1.15: So on the rear, things are pretty clean. There’s no room for legacy AV. There’s a digital optical audio, covered Ethernet jack, twin USBs. Beside the HDMI output is a covered second HDMI. There’s also twin dish feed.
On the underside we have a small fan.
1.40: Because this is the future, Sky Q is ready for 4K services. The box is Apple AirPlay compatible as well as Bluetooth enabled. This is quite possibly the first ever licensing of AirPlay for a non-speaker device. There are 12 tuners and you can record four channels at once. One new feature is My Q. Here a Continue function allows you to pick up watching on one box, where you left off on another. My Q will automatically record the next episode of a show you were watching. If it's an On Demand programme, it still shows up, but with a download icon.
2.06: Another big change is the remote control. This is the Sky Q Touch, it’s a Bluetooth controller with a touchpad. It also has a built in mic but that’s not activated yet. There are Sky and Home buttons which replace the old planner. You swipe to navigate. There are transport controls and record button.
Quite different from the old Sky remote. It’s nicely made, and I think feels good in the hand. Also in the box is a power lead and an HDMI cable.
3.07: Just to get a sense of how small the Silver is this is my Sky+ box. It’s not particularly big, as you can see, but seems absolutely massive with the Silver on top. A look at the rear shows just how neat and tidy the new Sky q is, even with unused USBs.
3.31: Onto the Sky Q Mini, which is where the system starts to get really interesting. The Silver can stream to two Minis simultaneously. You can watch live TV, any of your recordings or on-demand stuff.
The remote isn’t Bluetooth it’s a standard IR controller, which means nice clickable buttons. You can also use this to control the bigger Silver box.
4.29: So this is the Mini, which lives up to its name. There’s an embossed Sky logo on the top. The front has a WPS button to link to the Silver box.
On the rear there’s an optical audio output, HDMI and Ethernet, here covered, most will use Wi-Fi. You can’t watch 4K through a Mini. It’s HD only. Any 4K recordings on the planner of the main box will not appear on the Mini at all.
Sky Q boxes create there own private mesh network over 5GHz to interoperate. The video stream is a private channel between devices.
