This is what racing was all about. I can smell the Castrol R40. Love the shot at the embankment, sure there was a Mk1 RS Escort there. And great to hear Murray's commentary. The sound of those motors. Thanks, Andy. :)
I remember watching this in 1981! Great to see it again. Incredible that Imps had been out of production for five years and were giving away at least 300cc to every other car there. (Yes, I know they are space frame but you get my point)
And this afternoon on Grandstand: Figure skating from Helsinki; racing from Haydock, rugby union from Aberavon, boxing from Hornchurch and saloon car racing from Thruxton.
That was nostalgic. I looked up my old photos of Donnington Park 1980 - Donnington GT series. One photo from Redgate corner with the Peter Baldwin mini, and X19 and loads of imps. I think there must have been a separate class for 'mad' space frame cars like the ones in the video. Drivers - George "welly" Potter, orange Louts Esprit with 5L engine, Tony Sugden, Skoda, Mick Hill, VW beetle and Skoda, probably many more too. Never went to Thruxton, always Donnington as it was withing cycling distance!.
The very best of mod saloon racing. By the way, not that it matters, because it's a mini so no one cares; that Peter Baldwin version had a Manx conversations gearbox adapter to take a Ford X-flow block pattern, on his it's a 1300cc BDH which reputedly had 180 bhp. More interesting than that, they had previously built an Imp engine to mini adapter as used by Ginger Marshal? 🤤🤯 in previous years but the imp unit had ran out of development by the mid 70's. It was indeed costs that killed this championship. 😒

I grew up listening to Murray Walker commentating on all kinds of motorsport, his enthusiasm could make any event exciting.
This is bang on , ya messer.
Lovely to watch, thank-you. Especially as a spaceframe Stiletto owner myself 😃
Pat Mannion and Brian Cutting in Ray Payne/ Hartwell engineered / powered maguire stilletos, chasing Peter Baldwin 1300 BDA Powered mini...Fantastic
utter class !!!

Fabulous!
Superb. I remember Pat Mannion racing his immaculate blue/white Lotus Anglia 1800 in 1968/69.
Real clubman racing. I watched a lot of it in the day, especially at Croft.
That BD on a mini was built by the great Gordon Allen.
Love it! 😎
OMG this video is pure gold , thank you for sharing !!!
What a treat, mid-week
Thanks for sharing
Minton is back racing that escort and the mini is owned by a Japanese guy who owns several space framed minis
Looking forward to an update on your spaceframe Imp after seeing this 👍
Don’t they just sound lovely

I only ever buy my wool from Wendy's Wools.
Brilliant. Did the red stiletto have an incident with the mini ?
Only one actual Legend there: Peter Baldwin.
