    This team threw the freaking football almost every down! Back then it was unheard of. Living in the " run the ball" south, IT WAS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR! AWESOME AND FUN TO WATCH.
    I WATCHED THE CHARGERS EVERYTIME THEY WERE ON TV BACK WHEN FOUTS WAS THERE!
    JEFFERSON, JOINER, WINSLOW, CHANDLER, ETC...
    FUN FUN FUN!😃👍

    Love how you edited this with the music! I really like the music for the showcase of the Air Coryell offense mixed with the soundbyte of "It's Alive" from Frankenstein! I have watched this 4 times today already! Thank you! This time means so much to me and is the reason I became a football fan!

    The Air Coryell Charger era is what made me lifelong fan. "San Diego, Super Chargers, Charge!!!" RIP Coach Coryell. Looking forward to a new culture of championship football with the 2021crew. Time to BOLT UP!

    great job editing this. We had season tickets from 1962-2011.....i was 8 when JJ and Coryell came.....what a great childhood to witness that first hand. To be able to replace a talent like JJ with a guy like Chandler was insane. Arguably, Chandler was the better WR....but i will always be partial to JJ and think what could have been

      It's hard to say who was better, like splitting hairs. You'd have to assume Jefferson would just be hitting his prime in his 4th, 5th and 6th years in that offense and would have only gotten better as well.

    Nice Video put together!I was in High School in the late 70s and Air Coryell and Fours and Company were my Team!They were a Treat to Watch!I know they set all kind of Offensive Records back in the day!They just needed a little better Defense and they definitely would of had some rings!A lot of those Charger games were exciting to watch and I was very fortunate to watch them and remeber them very well!I believe the Chargers led the NFL in passing for like 6 seasons in a row if I am not mistaken!What a treat to see!Pleasure to see JJ,Winslow,Joined,and Chandler!Still to this day to me the BEST!

    • @w41duvernay

      Remember the same offensive took the Redskins to 3 Super Bowl with a decent defensive as well. Jack Kent Cooke wasn't cheap on the money with the team.

    • @JohnDoe-nj3vj
      @JohnDoe-nj3vj 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They would NOT have won 3 Superbowls you idiot. They lost a couple good players, and brought in a great player. They choked because they couldn't stop anyone with Fred Dean.... They didn't have the coach to win the big one.

    • @tragicslip
      @tragicslip 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JohnDoe-nj3vj here are the rules of FA at the time: A free agent’s original team held the right of first refusal, enabling it to retain its player by matching any contract offer by another team. The original team was also entitled to draft choice compensation from the team signing its player. However, there was an actual structure, based on a player’s NFL experience and his new salary, which determined the number and caliber of draft picks to be awarded.
      This allowed teams rights to its players that, contractually, no longer existed.
      The 1982 collective bargaining agreement also still included the right of first refusal and draft pick compensation but adjusted draft compensation to align with multiple tiers of salaries.
      if you were a small market team, or "cheap" your team could not match offers and would bleed talent. yes the chargers D was weak. 3 years as the #1 scoring and yards O in the league make up for that. the other years under the coach they were 2nd (5th in yards), 4th (1st in yards), 6th (4th in yards) and 12th (1st in yards).

    I've often wondered if Don Coryell and Sid Gilman knew each other, and, even if they didn't know each other, if Coryell was in any way influenced by Gilman (or vice versa). I say that because, at the same time Coryell was coaching the pass-happy San Diego State Aztecs in the 1960s, Gilman was coaching the pass-happy San Diego Chargers just a few miles away.

    • @05gtdriver
      @05gtdriver 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don Coryell and his assistant coaches at SDSU(John Madden & Joe Gibbs) would attend Chargers practices where Sid Gillman(and assistant Chuck Noll) were running plays circa 1964-65.

    • @SingleTax
      @SingleTax 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@05gtdriver Then perhaps it's reasonable to assume that Gilman is the common thread that link's Coryell's version of the "west coast offense" with Bill Walsh's version -- the key difference between the two being that Walsh's version (which is essentially a fusion of what he learned from studying Gilman's offense and what he learned as an assistant coach under Paul Brown) was designed *specifically* with a relatively weak-armed quarterback in mind, whereas Coryell's version wasn't.

    • @05gtdriver
      @05gtdriver 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SingleTax Walsh coached for the Raiders under Al Davis(a Gillman product himself), so the common denominator is Al Davis(a proponent of the west coast offense). I think Coryell took cues from Gillman while observing practices during that era where they both shared the same practice field.

    • @SingleTax
      @SingleTax 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@05gtdriver Sorry, I disagree. As you yourself said, Davis was a product of Gilman, not the other way around. Walsh spent only one season with the Raiders, so Davis' only real contribution was to introduce Walsh to Gilman's offensive philosophy, which Walsh continued to study long after leaving the Raiders. It was in 1970 -- the third of his *eight* seasons as assistant coach with the Cincinnati Bengals -- that Walsh began helping head coach and football mastermind, Paul Brown, develop an offensive scheme with a specific aim towards compensating for quarterback Virgil Carter's relatively weak arm. That was the offensive scheme that eventually became known as the west coast offense. Hence my conclusion that Walsh's system is primarily a fusion of what he learned from both Gilman and Brown.

    • @05gtdriver
      @05gtdriver 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SingleTax I wasn't debating anything, just stating where Walsh most likely was exposed to the vertical passing game to move the football more effectively. The path Walsh(a genius in his own right) took to arrive at in regards to the west coast offense you describe totally makes sense. Cheers!

    when you run the ball you have only two results : you get the yards you need or don't. and it happens so quickly . when you pass : quarterback goes back, tries to connect to receivers, if receivers covered qb can run through an opening, he can roll out giving time for recievers to get open, or release a blocking back , and so on . by philosophy is you run the ball on first of second and long . you pass the ball when its any down and you need one yard or less .
