A bit late for a comment.... but
1st put the transfer case in neutral, this helps a lot getting the levers out.
2nd support the engine under the oil-pan with a jack. Never leave it leaning on the fire-wall.
3rd, If you have an engine jack (or a hoist on the ceiling), support the gearbox from the hoist with a rope around it through the hole in the floor to drop it and hoist it back in.
4th removing the cross member after you support the engine will allow you to slide the gearbox and transfer much earlier than 'waiting' for the cross member to clear the flanges of the frame. (not having to lower it as much as with the cross member.

It all looks good ! I was going to raise mine off the ground on ramps to get a bit more clearance underneath. One thing you might consider is drilling and tapping a hole in the inboard end of the lever cross pin, you could then just pull the pin out inwards with a slide hammer, with the pin part way out as it is now, it only needs a slight knock to break off the cast lug through which it passes, not that you are likely to need to take it out again! Many thanks for taking the time to video this and post it. Good luck ! Chris B.

Thanks Chris, raising it as high as you can seems to be the way forward. I chose to do it after I had dropped the transmission for ease of working on the jeep and safety.

Thanks for putting all of this on, you explain things so well. When you refurbish the Gearbox etc could you please mention the best place to source the items and approx cost . Thanks Dave

No Problem Dave, I will do all of that. I have found some interesting things out about rebuilding these gearboxes which I will explain in later videos, I have also found a proper source of quality reproduction parts in the EU which I will explain, I would only recommend buying the proper quality parts for the long term reliability of these gearboxes and to remove the need to do rebuilds such as I am doing to this one at the moment!

I leave the bell housing on the engine. Just unbolt transmission from bell housing.

Hi green dot, I own a 44 GPW & had the gearbox out last year, I raised my jeep 9" off the floor on wooden blocks and then removed gearbox without bell housing then removed it later. I think you will struggle to remove the hole thing in one go with wheel on the floor, have a go, KBO Roger North Norfolk.

Hi Roger, thanks for the comment. I managed to get the transmission out from under the jeep by separating the bellhousing from the transmission once I had dropped it down as a single piece, that way I didnt need to jack the jeep up very high I take it you refitted the transmission with the bellhousing already attached to the engine, how did you find that? That is the way the manual says to do it but I have read many people online say that it is easier to attach the bellhousing to the transmission first then bolt it all to the engine. I did not find removing the transmission to be too difficult fortunately.

Hi Greendot, yes I fitted the bellhousing first then made pilot studs to screw into b/h to support g/b, I than fitted clutch fork through hole in bellhousing, it helps if you have small hands but can be done. In the meantime I did have the bellhousing off to check clutch and change spigot bearing and starter motor shaft bearing in bellhousing. My main problem was the high/low gear shaft roller bearings ( a common fault) all is well now. K B O. Roger.

Really great videos! What's on the plate mounted on the outboard passenger side frame rail, behind the front wheel? Looks like an additional data plate...

    • @Greendot319

Hi, the plate is a British Army depot rebuild plate from the 1950's. The matching frame for this jeep was badly damaged and required replacement so I found a Dallas March 1945 GPW (for my Dallas May 1945 jeep) frame to replace it that was in practically perfect condition, the jeep that that frame came from was one that had seen British service and so the frame has a British data plate too. Its nice for my jeep that spent its whole life in the USA and never saw Military service to have a frame now that has some interesting British Military history.

That's awesome! Nice to have some provenance with your jeep. Yep, most of them over here were "beer run" jeeps. Your youtube channel is really great, you should think about monetizing it. I don't know anything about the process but it looks like you're on track to start making money off of it. And as a viewer, having a couple ads really isn't a big deal when you have informative content such as yours.

thanks Robert, since the kids started messing up the TH-cam they've changed the monetizing rules and I think you need 1k subscribers now until you can monetize. I'll have a think about it in the future!
