  • The booming tourism industry aimed at putting people on the peak of Mt. Everest has radically changed the lives of Nepal's Sherpas. National Geographic Young Explorer and photographer Max Lowe recently spent two months in Nepal's Khumbu region, documenting some of those changes.

    Until now, I had always thought that Sherpa was a profession. I had no idea it was the name of a people.

    The begining of the end of Sherpas culture... sad

      Oh yeah how sad for them to earn good money, to enjoy life a bit better and to finally have hospitals and such. Yes everest tourism has many many many bad sides I agree. But it has some positive aspects. Why should Westerners be the only ones to enjoy modern civilisation?

    Cell phone penetration & connectivity is not just Everest region but almost all remote corners of the world due to low installation cost compared to landlines.

    doesnt sound like its getting better to me, just because food is more diverse doesnt mean its healthier, and why do you need cell phones? i like the idea of the calmer life where you dont need these things and you can focus on the simpler things in life and 'true happiness' . now a lot of them are probably just focused on money.

    What the heck does that Former High Altitude Sherpa mean? Is there any former/post and high/ low altitude sherpa? Sherpa is one of the particular ethnic groups of Nepal. Don't take "Sherpa" as a synonym to "Porter". You know nothing about sherpa. Don't take interview with those sherpas who know nothing about how do the outer society define the sherpa people. They feel proud only because many people know sherpa but do not know how do many people around the world know the sherpa people.

    • @monishasekar4716
      @monishasekar4716 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's their community name. In Asia mostly community names are kept as surnames unlike west where there are family names.

    let the mystical invade you, for there lies a door to the "other side" , its not for nothing that in the bible its said, "ask and it will be given to you, seek and ye shall find" . but do you know how to ask ? do you know how to seek?
