Sometimes life draws mysteriously from fiction. How a small move saved a fictional and a real president. Some events are truly mysterious. Glad that in both cases, the bullets missed.
It can be said that in this fictional movie there is also a real historical situation in the background. De Gaulle had granted independence to Algeria, and the assassination attempt was retaliation for this concession to Arab nationalism. Trump, on the other hand, is not withdrawing his support for Israel, and the shots fired at him did not miss but hit an innocent bystander. But there are these fictional yet prophetic movies. Consider, for example, the movie "Escape From New York" (1981). A terrorist-controlled plane crashes into the middle of skyscrapers in Manhattan, and the president himself becomes the target of sadistic recreational shooting.

The Jackal's mistake was opening that window way too soon. I often wonder how he would have gotten away from that building if he had succeeded in killing or wounding DeGaulle. I'm sure that the whole street would have been closed off and everyone searched. His best chance would have been to put on his disguise of a wounded veteran and got rid of the rifle and hoped to have escaped in all the confusion.
the Jackal can never decide which eye he is going to look through the telescopic sight of his rifle, he does the same thing in an earlier scene when he is testing the rifle , he changes from one eye to another......but I would have thought if you have calibrated the telescopic sight with one eye, then you have to use the same eye every time you take aim....otherwise the aim will be off.
Very well made film without over using dramatic effects except the one little flaw as i see it. the machine gun packs a wallop and would force him backwards and maybe push the body somewhat but it lifts him almost to the ceiling! Okay not a big deal but overall one of the most thrilling and smart movies ever.
The Jackals only mistake was to try to reload. It's more than likely he could have rushed at the inspector and over powered him. Having proved through out the movie in at least 3 instances he could kill with his hands in seconds.
Well, he'd have probably won, but the other necessary kills, were by surprise, he'd have been involved in an brawl against an opponent, and he couldn't have been assured he'd win. Military men, probably would always go for the reload and fire, its the safest way.

Spoiler ending of 1973's Day of the Jackal, based on Frederick Forsyth's 1971 novel. Fiction based on fact; attempted assassination of da Gualle. It was a "lone assassin", however he was hired by a far right faction of the French Military. 2:28 Back and to the left
My wife was very upset at the end of the movie... She said that the whole movie was pointless because the Jackal won. He managed to arrive to and disappear in Paris. He was eliminated due to a series of unbelievable coincidences, which spoiled and degraded the entire story. It was like last 10 minutes were copy/pasted from another movie. Still: great cinema.
Fiction: Meticulous planning with a custom rifle foiled because he uses his one shot to kill the redshirt instead of the protagonist. Reality: Spam limo with surplus rifle, kills cop with repeating backup weapon, captured alive, killed before trial to stop his talking.
