    They did Haida dirty in season 4. Are the writers so afraid that Retsuko and Haida getting together would end the series? They could've put more focus on their coworkers and their relationships if they're out of ideas.

    I think the main issue with Aggretsuko is that its too afraid to go past the status quo when it comes to its writing/characters, and so whenever the characters show any hint of growth it’ll just have them revert back in the end in order to keep said status quo. This hurts Haida the most since his obsession with Retsuko was fine and even somewhat adorkable at first, but for him to just keep defaulting back to it instead of actually moving on and doing something better with his life, it just gets frustrating and borderline creepy. It’s a shame too since Aggretsuko is a solid show that actually tackles some pretty serious issues, but its inability to change is what overall impacts the later seasons.

    • @mangamandrew
      @mangamandrew 2 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Which is what exactly happens in season 4. And I would argue that characters return back to a status quo but not the same status quo. The status quo has been constantly changing but not the core aspects except this most recent season.

    I honestly really disliked how the Tadano/Retsko relationship ended. Yeah, Tadano didn't want to get married and have kids and that was a dealbreaker for her, but it felt like that was only ever brought up once, and it was clear Tadano didn't understand how bit of a deal that was to her. If the issue had been brought up several times and portrayed as a firmer roadblock, it woulda made sense, but the only time she definitively tells him her issues is when she breaks up with him - and honestly it feels like the initial airing of grievances shoulda been the start of potential relationship building - not the end of it. Especially given that Tadano seemed to genuinely care about her and want the best for her... I just didn't buy that the relationship was UNSALVAGEABLE.
    The thing that irked me the most was when she said that she wanted to keep working because she loved her job... despite the fact that the ENTIRE PREMISE OF THE SHOW is that her job is a toxic environment shes trying to escape. It really felt like they just wanted to reset her to the status quo, but it felt like such a rushed way to do it.
    ...this is only tangentially relevant to Haida but dangit mentioning the donkey boy reminds me how I still feel he was done dirty too.

      She literally said how getting married was important to her and he said that's just not something he wanted. It was a healthy break up and realistic. Some people are childfree and never want to get married while others do want that. And it just won't work for people with those two different wants in life. I think their relationship was the most healthy and realistic displays of relationships and mutual breakups.

    • @CrowCoded
      @CrowCoded 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Not to mention, they never did discuss the issues Retsuko had. The time she brought it up was when she was breaking up with him but...consider.
      They're in their early twenties. They don't need to get married so quickly, let alone have kiddos. I feel like if Retsuko and Tadano had a more even discussion on the matter, maybe speak on the terms of a future tense when they're both further in their careers where maybe they can afford that sort of thing. They had TIME.
      And then Inui definitely deserved better. Haida isn't exactly the best, but I mean. When they had their little arc, they were doing so well and if was a good for both of em narratively. Sighs.

  • @sakurabiskuit
    @sakurabiskuit 2 ปีที่แล้ว +132

    I actually really like Haida's "reset" at the end of season 3.
    When Inui says "This must have been the choice you made after a long thinking", he answers "I wasn't thinking. If I did, I probably would have chosen you".
    Moving on from Retsuko was the logical thing to do, but one can't simply reset their feelings when their love is not corresponded. Haida only tried dating Inui because everyone told him he should, not because he was ready to move on. So, in the end, he chose to follow his heart, even if it was completely illogical. And I honestly appreciate that.
    What I don't appreciate tho is Season 4 Haida. Fortunately, not all hope is lost, because with Haida quitting his job at the end of it, it opens up a plethora of opportunities for his character, and for his relationship with Retsuko, to be developed into something better.
    Please let Season 5 be good.

    ~ Ton should have stayed fired. I loved his arc. I believe he truly changed and became a humbler man. If anything, when he was reinstated he should not have been put back in the same position.
    ~ Haida should have kept his new position as the accounting director. His character has always been surrounded by Rets. The new job should have given him new goals and helped him move on from her.
    This should have been the beginning of some form of character development where he became more confident in himself, not more insecure. This could have been shown through his anxiety going down and him be more level headed and rational than before, and by also being a gentle reliable leader unlike Ton.
    Him being apart of the fraud didn’t seem like his character. They could have Himuro threaten him or something, putting him in a position were he had to do what he did. He could have become a whistleblower.

    The main Issue when it comes to Haida, is basically the writers wanting their ship to be cannon no matter how illogical it is in general given the development of the characters. Because realistically Haida should've been with Innui and that's the real life situation that would mostly likely happen. So I also felt this was bullshit for Haida to screw that up and want to go with Retsuko again.

And yes, Haida did need the push fro Tadano to get him to make the choice to help Retsiko but that just comes to show that Haida could not make the choice on his own. I love a lot of these characters from this anime, but it pains me so much that they won't let characters develop without hitting a big reset. While I was greatly upset with Haida not ending up with Inui, he really couldn't get over his crush of Retsuko, so I was happy for Inui stepping away from said relationship.
    I was uncomfortable with how Haida helped Retsuko out of her funk when there's a better way to handle it, but in a small way, I guess it spoke to Retsuko and how she has confronted her problems. But even with after that big step in their relationship, it was super annoying to see Haida spend so many episodes with cold feet. They finally go on a date and become lovers; however, to further the annoyance, their date together is montaged and given so little context that would have helped see what kind of relationship they were building. The whole relationship, after so long that fans waited for, personally I just wanted the two happy with whoever, they didn't need to be together in my eyes, and it was given less screen time than Retsuko's previous two, or Haida's almost one. Most of the relationship seemed to have just been spent on Haida trying to build up the courage and it was just sad to watch, still entertaining, but I was way more annoyed with the show than anything.

Like in previous seasons it made it look like that was his only problem when the reality is that Haida is just always insecure and self loathing IN GENERAL. So yeah I liked that they weren't just focusing on his obession with getting a date. His breakdown even makes sense because he got recognition that he always wanted, from the Company CEO no less, and the power went to his head in a desperate attempt to maintain this newfound appreciation he's been getting; which in turn just started made things worse when his coworkers started to hate him.

I feel someone who's insecure about his own value, and wants to put himself at the same level as their girlfriend's exes, which mind you, one of them is a CEO of a tech company, would be a very good target to get lured into a fraud scheme, even if they knew it was a fraud from the very start. Insecurities can make you do stuff that goes against your own principles, one of the main points of the entire show is that nobody is completely good or bad, and bad in this context doesn't mean flawed, but ill intended. Haida did bad things, not because he was evil, but because he was, imo, very swiftly lured in a moment of vulnerability. Being valued for the work he put on, the insecurity of not being enough for Aggretsuko (which I'll agree, is completely unfounded at this point) and the charisma/confidence of his boss are actually a very good mix for anyone in Haida's situation with Haida's personality to agree to take fraudulent actions. It would've been a completely different story if Haida was more confident in himself, which I feel was the deciding factor for him to go against his own principles in the first place. And all of this is coming from someone who dislikes Haida.

    It felt like awkward fanfiction.

    Honestly I like the stuff going on with Mr.Ton or the other employees in season 4 and their relationships with each other as well as how they react to the changes at the workplace, and how with all the BS they deal with at work they all enjoy their job and coworkers enough to try to fix the issues and stop the illegal activity in the company.
    I didn’t really like how Haida acted towards Retsuko, but his actions about work and his guilt for fudging the numbers was a shock and he went from “it is what it is” to “let me commit fraud” was wtf

    I could kind of get Hida's reasoning because his whole character has been that of a coward normally. I feel like it would be more effective to take a different approach upon his insecurity.

      Except they did? The past 3 seasons it was isolated with his who romance life. Here they made it clear that this is just the person Haida is all the time and got a swelled head the moment he had a taste of the power and validation he always wanted.

    I kind of knew this would happen, really loved the cute idea of this show, having only seen a couple episodes I knew they would make Haida lose over and over again, despite so much growth in characters, they still never went anywhere, as someone below me stated, the creators thought it would end the series if they got together.

    Prologue of the first episode of Season 4 was enough to make me close Netflix and never watch the show again.
    All my respect for Haida as a character was gone with just that moment. All because they wanted to milk the fuck out of that stupid "Will they or won't they" trope.

      If this season could’ve done anything. Just explain that plot line better. Remove the useless instances in the first 2 episodes where Haida is still afraid to date Retsuko. That’ll give it more time to show Haida’s perspective on committing fraud and possibly elaborate on how Himuro is involved with this.
      Everything else can relatively stay the same (with the exception of Retsuko attempting murder) and it would be fine. Even better. Cut that useless crap with the Will They Won’t They in the beginning of the season.

    What made Haida ultra insecure in season 4 was that Retsuko lied to him and went to see Tadano behind his back. Granted, they weren't doing anything wrong, but Haida's insecurity was cranked up to eleven when he saw his grilfriend hanging out with her more successful ex behind his back.

    I too am really upset by what season 4 did, so this was very satisfying to listen to. I do however have to politely disagree with your take that Haida should've stuck with Inui. While they did seem to have a healthy thing going on at the start, the biggest problem with Inui was that she was way too perfect for him and represented something he likely wouldn't have been able to connect with as well in the future. Haida's crush on Retsuko started after he saw her stealing water, which meant to him that there was way more to her than just the cute, friendly co-worker next door. She was a flawed person like him who lied, could be selfish, and had many human qualities to her that she never fully revealed at work but left him wanting to know more about. While Retsuko had a hidden side to her, a side that maybe he can relate to, a side that'll allow him to connect with her, a side that'll help him in return with his own worries and stress as a young adult in the labor force, Inui WAS that perfect, ideal, friendly co-worker Retsuko appeared to be but really isn't. Too bad season 4 threw out the potential that could've had. 😔

      Watching it I slowly started to get upset seeing Haida on screen. He honestly became so unlikable in Season 4 by the end. It felt like I was watching a whole new character instead of the ones we know and loved. Although I will say the situation with Ton in this situation was really more interesting that made season 4 "okay" for me. Like a 7/10.

    I think that the idea of everything coming back to normal is kinda THE trope in aggretsuko. It's much more.. life-like? People do mistakes, learn from them and then do the same mistakes again. Big adventures does not mean that the character will change immediately. It's a bad.. or rather hard way to write a good show, but doesn't make it unrealistic. So to me it makes sense that there is continuity in this show, but characters don't change much, because at the end of the day their goals don't change so they don't have to change much until they get what they want (Anai changing after getting a gf for example). This also makes a good base for implementing other relatable Japanesse office stories. If you reset your characters you can put them in as many wonky life scenearious as you want.
    But it doesn't change the fact that this season was the most boring one, I couldn't even finish it.
    Also idc, Haida doesn't deserve Inui, she's too good for him. I hope that she'll get a cameo where she does well without him.

    I forgot most of the season already, but I remember that armwrestling scene.
    I have a lot of problems with my pride and hate hierarchy, duking it out is normal, cause you can't really lose (we just get tired and bruised, no one goes for the kill). If we really care about something, you just don't give up.
    But Haida losing in success, smarts and physique was a complete and utter domination, and when a girl is involved I can't even imagine the how soul crushing that would be. It felt like it was leading to some cuckoldry fetish for the Mary Sue that Retsuko became.
    I hope in season 5 Haida dumps Retsuko, find something he's better t than Tadano, or just lives for himself. Cause Retsuko is not a struggling character anymore, she can do no wrong. Let her scream beam all of her problems, who gives a f
