I can confirm that this set was definitely also available in Canada. I have two sets (one is missing a few pieces though) from my childhood.
I did ask my parents about this, because dad was stationed in Germany around that time (via the Canadian Military) and I thought he might have brought them back with him. But that wasn't possible, since he returned to Canada well before '85.
They obviously can't remember where they bought something 30 years ago.. but they said it may be a good possibility that they bought them at a CANEX store.
CANEX is a chain of convenience/mini-department stores found on Canadian Armed Forces Bases, and it is possible that they may have had them imported from germany.
I've also read online before (and sorry, I don't recall where that was now) that they may have been sold in Canada in the old Zeller's department store chain.
Hope that helps.. or was at least interesting lol.

According to my bilingual LEGO collector's guide (Fantasia Verlag, Dreieich, 2008) this set is simply called "spaceship",
the german 1000steine-Forum says that even the LEGOcompany itself just called it "rummodel" in danish which means "spacemodel" (i don't know where the user got this from). As always, great review

    Here's the set on Brickipedia:
    lego.wikia.com/wiki/1968_Space_Express
Not really much info in it...the reason I post this is in the picture you can see that it has a Zellers price sticker on the top right corner.
Zellers was a major Canadian chain discount department retailer based in Brampton, Ontario with stores throughout Canada before it went out of business.

If I remember right, in the early 80's McDonald's once had an order form for some (small selection) of Classic Space sets.
Again it was an order form, NOT actual polybag sets.
In the later 80's McDonald's did have polybag Lego sets.
My sister had a couple othat were racecars.

No it was set 1580 lunar scout that you are thinking of from 1986.

  • @jr3002

I still have this set - my parents got it new for me in Calgary, Canada when I was little. I don't recall a McDonald's connection - although I still have quite a few poly-bag happy meal Lego kits.
This spaceship (more like a space-tug...) is an odd-bird and doesn't really fit in with my other classic space sets but I love it all the same and I just imagined it was from another moon base far away that had different ways of spaceship building. Lego (Samsonite) Canada had a lot of autonomy up until 1988 and released a few special sets and packages of mini-figs not available elsewhere. I always thought this set was only available to kids in Canada!

My brother and I both had one, which are still in my parent's basement. If they were sold at Canada's Zellers chain that would explain how we got them. Many hours of fun with this set and the rest of my Lego, thanks for the memories.

I've been waiting for this review! our family has/had this set! I won't say it's mine cuz this thing is older than I am. This set (with a bunch of the older castle and pirate sets) belonged to my older brother. If your sources are correct. then my parents must of brought this back home from there trip to the Netherlands back in the day, since Germany isn't that far from the Netherlands.

Looks like a survey/drilling/extracting/collecting kind of unit. That would explain the awkward computers and the rods coming down from the centre and well as all these pipes.
Not a big fan of mixing translucent yellow, red AND green all together but I definitelly see the emerging colour scheme for the 2nd gen Space Police that I grew up with.

This set is so crazy! It's hideous, but that's the eighties for ya! I love it! I'm rather impressed with how the pod detaches from the "base" part, I wasn't aware they had mechanisms like that during that time. Thanks for sharing, JANG!

This was actually my first Lego set! I'm from Canada so it wasn't really a rare set here. I spent countless hours playing with it and moreso the pieces from the set to make many other things. Sadly the Red Space's helmet went all Benny on me and cracked. Still a great set and I have many great memories from it.

Well, I am from Germany and I had this set as a kid.
Of course I don't know for sure where it was bought but back then there was no big toy shop company in my general area.
I know that most of my lego sets came from Woolworth (Yes, there were and still are Woolworth stores in Germany.), so it might have been a Woolworth exclusive.
    No guarantee though.

I would call it a Space Hover Bus, since all those engine pieces look like hover pontoons to me.
I also think the detached cockpit looks very nice by itself, and overall this is a really nice set.

We were cleaning out my Dad's house a few months ago and found two unopened boxes of this set. No thinking, we let our kids open them and play with them. Anyways, I have the original boxes, instructions and parts in excellent condition. The set was bought in Canada. If you want any pictures, let me know.

    • @gdfschimpi007

Opening the boxes would only decrease the value. Best to sell them and buy them used if you care to play with them. Anyways, do you have the box number for this set?

Ooh, I have the original instructions too. It's a one page instruction sheet(!) which is really odd for a set of this size. Mine lists on the bottom the words "Canadian Reg'd T.M. of INTERLEGO AG, Samsonite, Stratford, Ontario, a registered user."
Samsonite? Like the suitcase manufacturer? WEIRD.

Yes! Those trans-yellow pieces have been used before. In the Uranium Search Vehicle (6928). And yes, i got that set.
This unnamed set was here (NL) also in the local toystore but to me this set was a really ugly one! The green canopy isn't working with the yellow parts. The black heatsink parts on the roof look wierd. Not much integrated. The bulky back in combination with the slim lined middle section. Those computers on the roof...white? Why? And those struts underneath the middle section... This set got too much things 'off' the cool-scale.
The Gamma-V Laser Craft (6891) got all angles and features correct. This one is plain ugly to me.
