      @dnish6673 Yes, and I love Kevin Kline and appreciate any time the Academy recognizes a comedy. But Cruise shouldn't have been nominated as a Supporting Actor, he should have been nominated as lead also. I know only one could win, but I would have voted for Cruise over Hoffman.

    One thing I like about this movie is the way that being together stretches both brothers out of their comfort zones. In many ways, Charlie's life and emotions are just as stilted and set as Raymond's. Not only does spending time with Raymond change and soften Charlie, but it also helps stretch Raymond's emotions and his tolerance for change. It's a win-win in the end for both.

    I have an older brother who is autistic & was institutionalized at the age of 9. He's 8 years older than me. I know it's what was best for him, but I carry guilt that my parents did it in order to protect me. This movie is what allowed me to explain my brother to my friends. Very little is known about Autism, but it was way, way less in the 80's & 90's.

    • @fatkidgames4381
      @fatkidgames4381 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +30

      Don't feel guilty, as someone who spends 40+ hrs a week with autistic individuals as a DSP and CPS, it may have been better for your brother. I'm not a fan of institutions, but having the care available 24/7 is sometimes the best thing, what's really important Is that the individuals get the chance to go out into the community and become part of it in anyway they can. The company I work for does that, I literally spend my days getting individuals into the community, we volunteer, we go do things that they wouldn't normally get to do by being segregated behind walls and fences. I understand where your guilt comes from, but make the time to spend with your brother and you'll find your guilt will be replaced by joy

      @@fatkidgames4381 Not speaking from personal experience, thank God, but I know it can also take a huge toll on the parents whether or not they have other kids. They have to be constantly vigilant, and as the child grows up he or she gets bigger and stronger and potentially more dangerous. There’s also the looming question of what happens when the parents die or are unable to take care of their child. It’s such a difficult situation for all involved.
      Even though autism was beginning to get more attention, this movie really helped raise awareness about it. I’m glad you were able to use it to help your friends understand your situation better.

      This film did so much to raise awareness about autism. I am autistic myself, way less severe than Raymond, but it was after I saw this film that I was seeking a diagnosis. In the community of autistic people there is also some degree of criticism concerning the depiction of autism as the extreme mental abilities are more taken from Savant Syndrome, but all in all the way Dustin Hoffman got all the mannerisms and overload panic and coping mechanisms right is impressing to me and the reaction to the film is a sign to me that his portrayal of the character did a good job in promoting understanding and empathy for an autistic character on a deep level. There have been lots of films since then that have used autistic characters but very few have managed to do that.

    Couple of things from somebody who works at a casino: Counting cards is not illegal. But casinos can refuse to let you play any game they want if they feel you are winning too much too often. And will either ask you play only other types of games and slot machines or ban you from the casino all depending. But also what Raymond is doing isn't really "counting cards" in the normal sense. Counting cards involves keeping track of the card count in your head by using a +1 -1 system to know when the deck will be ripe with face cards which are what you want in Blackjack. And is a totally legal and legitimate technique for Blackjack, while not exactly easy without practice, and only becomes illegal if you use a device of some kind to help you keep track. Many casinos use 6 decks of cards at once in Blackjack, in order to make it harder for card counters. But Raymond is actually memorizing every card in all 6 decks(312 cards in total). Which is insane.
    Hope this helps and sending love from Muldrow, Oklahoma to me fellow Oklahomans.

    It wasn't until the 1940s that autism was recognized as a distinct disorder in the U.S. and even in the 70s and 80s, it wasn't as widely recognized as it is now. So this concept was quite new for its time, almost ahead of its time. While I don't really know how close Dustin Hoffman got to being authentic, he still did an amazing job in this movie. I will advocate for you to watch the movie Awakenings, with Robert DeNiro and Robin Williams. It draws inspiration from the real-life experiences of neurologist Oliver Sacks, and his detailed accounts of using the new drug at the time L-DOPA to awaken patients suffering from post-encephalitic syndrome.

One student with downs used to follow me around everywhere to help out with anything I needed. Including tattling on one of his autistic classmates whenever that kid was getting into something he shouldn’t. He was my number one buddy in that class, but they were all awesome in their own way. Ooo, I second that. For October “scary” season-there’s nothing better (or funnier) than Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein. Plus Bela Lugosi plays Dracula again & Lon Chaney Jr. as Larry Talbot. It’s not Karloff as the monster, but it weirdly doesn’t matter. Great suggestion🤘

    I remember when this movie came out, besides becoming a giant hit, it created world wide awareness about autism. Quantas took pride in showing the film, uncut on their flights, unlike other airlines, since the statistic told by Raymond were true (with jet airliners). Also, the story goes, that Tom Cruise was picked for the role as the brother, because his nose is identical to Hoffman's, which would indicate an obvious biological bond in the movie....Dustin Hoffman studied for the role of Raymond for a year and in his Oscar speech, he thanked three autistic individuals, who helped him with his role. One of them was Joseph Sullivan, an autistic savant, considered the real life version of the Raymond character, there are a few documentaries about Sullivan worth watching...

    29:48 Abbott & Costello were the biggest comedy duo of the 1940s, Jay, making several hit movies, primarily for Universal Pictures, and also appearing regularly on radio (back when radio was the main home entertainment before television became popular). Their most famous routine was “Who’s On First,” which every baseball fan should know by heart. I strongly encourage you two to see some of their early Universal films like BUCK PRIVATES (1941), IN THE NAVY (1941), KEEP ‘EM FLYING (1941), HOLD THAT GHOST (1941), RIDE ‘EM COWBOY (1942), WHO DONE IT? (1942), HIT THE ICE (1943), IN SOCIETY (1944), THE NAUGHTY NINETIES (1945), which has a virtually perfect version of “Who’s On First” (as seen at 47:18 ), LITTLE GIANT (1946), THE TIME OF THEIR LIVES (1946), BUCK PRIVATES COME HOME (1947), and ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN (1948).

    We have come a loooong way when it comes to "special people". Back in the 60s and early 70s, you seldom saw or interacted with "special people". They were someone to hide away from society. If you did see someone special, the talk was about them and not TO them "And what would your child like to eat? Does you child want water? Does your child want to rest?" It was never directly to them "What do YOU want to eat? Do YOU want water? etc" For ten years I was the "liaison" for a "national personality that shall not be named....(hint: Ron McSomething). Anyway, he would visit the Special Olympics in my city every year and I had to be his liaison. We got to meet and talk to the Special children all day. Some great conversations (they have no filter so your hear the best gossip). I noticed the HUGE difference in 1960s special people and 2015 special people. It was like their IQs had jumped 20 to 30 points. It had to be all the interaction with everyday people. Our society has come a looong way to be inclusive of special people. They are now getting to state their opinions and their needs and wants. I like that a lot. They have always had this potential, it was us that were the wrench jamming the gears. If Rainman had gotten the proper schooling, he could have been highly functional in society and his IQ might have been 20 IQ points higher.

    Counting cards is legal (can't ban math skills). If the casino even thinks it may be happening you will be told to leave. Modern card counters usually work in groups because casinos use up to eight decks at once, too much for one person to keep up with. Card counting groups are considered a conspiracy and that is illegal.. Watch the movie 21 about M.I.T. students forming Black Jack teams that have been going to Vegas for years.

    In the 90s I met the "Rainman", Kim Peeks. The story of this film was total fiction and the character Raymond loosely based on Kim's abilities. He traveled around and did firesides with his parents, who spoke about Kim's abilities and what it was like to live with an autistic person. During the evening Kim amazed us all by showing his us abilities. You could tell him the date of your birth and he could tell you the day of the week you were born as well as the major world events on that day. If you told him what city you live in he could tell you your address and phone number. I was from a small community of 6000 people in Oregon (I met him in Utah) and even though two states away from his home, he still knew my information. It was truly amazing.

They drove that yellow car 50 ft from the office to the motel door over and over and over. (don't know why it was so hard to get the shot right). Tons of people there that night watching. It was June 1988 if i remember correctly. I think we left about 2am. We were just so excited that Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman were in Oklahoma. The motel was torn down a few years later. BTW, the scene where he takes Raymond to the doctor was filmed in Guthrie, Ok. At 25:18 you can see the Scottish Rite Temple up on the hill in the distance. The problem is, like was brought up in the movie, the Dr's spend 10 minutes with the individual and think they know them, when if you spend the time with them daily you truly see just how amazing they truly are.
