    Skoda is the one brand I wish we had in the States more than any other. The coolest low-key wagon I saw in Europe last summer was a lowered and obviously tuned Octavia vrs. I would trade my current car in on one of those immediately.

    • @Arkeo36
      @Arkeo36 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@markuslc1888 sadly, no. All new cars (or used cars within a certain age range) have to be certified to US crash standards. After 25 years a car from anywhere can be imported as an "antique," which eliminates that requirement. The real shame is that the Octavia, like all cars in Skoda's range, are essentially VW products, which definitely ARE certified for sale here. It is an issue of money, I am sure. But at a certain point it becomes silly to go through the trouble.

    • @Arkeo36
      @Arkeo36 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @sidlord1000 it isn't that the cars are unsafe or that they would not pass US crash safety or emissions tests - far from it! This is purely a bureaucratic problem. Nobody paid the proper fees to have the testing done, etc.

    • @erazorCTF
      @erazorCTF 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As the car is based on the Golf platform, it can be serviced in any VW dealership. You can just import one and then have it serviced at VW.

    • @vjexxx
      @vjexxx 5 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      We have an absurd situation - it is forbidden to use your mobile phone while driving because typing distracts from driving. You will pay a penalty for using your cellphone while driving. But at the same time, car makers are installing screens that have menus like cell phones, and you can't operate a car unless you use those screens. And who's stupid now? Give us the old-fashioned keys back!

    • @Adrian-jn9ov
      @Adrian-jn9ov 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      How often do you adjust the temperature to justifie the button? You could argue that you want it eather way and you have the right to do so, but with the same logic all our phones should have a buttons to dial a number. With the increase of the more convenient voice control and the often used automatic feature for climate, lights etc. there is little sense to put buttons for it on the dash. This is even more true for things you can already adjust with the steering wheel like volume.
      To have a larger navigation screen and to be able to use apps like Spotify natively or through apples or androids car integrations is a lot more important for a better user experience.

    • @Adrian-jn9ov
      @Adrian-jn9ov 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Why should the shifter be enormous? You use so little and can control it like before, but now you have more space to be used for storage for volume that was used by a unnecessary large shifter. It is still comfortable to use but doesn't get in the way.

    • @shroomyesc
      @shroomyesc 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Adrian-jn9ov I live in southern Finland, which means I wear gloves half the year and therefore can't use the touch screen half the year, and in any case, even if I don't have gloves on, I do change the temperature a lot because I don't wear the same clothes everyday, to put it simply. Therefore the same temperature isn't comfortable to me every day and in this climate I would have to take manual control a lot in any case.

I only expect it to be more expensive here adding costs of transport and taxes so if the price of the Passat stays as it is, I’m looking at about a €3000 more expensive Octavia. So it’s not a joke.

    I do like a decent estate, and this looks really smart. I don't get why SUVs are so popular when estates are generally better to drive and more practical.

    • @davidpadbury1308
      @davidpadbury1308 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I can answer that - SUV's have all the benefits of an estate but in addition have naturally higher seating that you can just slide into rather than flop down onto. When one is cursed with a very painful back, as I am, SUV's make absolute sense. I bought a new Karoq back in March and it is absolutely brilliant. Yesterday, I was driven to the railway station in the back of a Mercedes C class. Nice car - but my back really hurt as I tried to get out. I much, much prefer my Skoda.

    • @andrewmontague2636
      @andrewmontague2636 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Gary Ambrose Yes, why is that? People say they want SUVs for practicality when they’re simply hatchbacks on stilts. A good estate car is much more practical. The elevated driving position of SUVs will only work until everyone drives one and then there’ll be no advantage. What happens then? Double-decker cars which you drive from the upstairs, perhaps?! 😂

      Yeah and in many cases it costs more! Apart from the badges, Skoda is the best out of VW, Audi and Seat. VW is basically fooling and robbing customers... now VW has the same plastic as Skoda. Even more so for Audi. Unless you're going for a powerful engine, I find absolutely no reason to by them... and if you want an Audi to feel more like an Audi should be, you got to pay loads extra! Example A1 or Q2 etc... IT'S LUDICROUS!!!

    And the best part is that it is Czech and German work more Czech because gearboxes, upholstery, glass, soon, rubber, wipers, seats and much more is made in the Czech Republic because there are several workshops and factories in the Czech Republic there are German engines which are half German and half Czech. The displays are from Germany a little modified from Seat. But connectivity on board computers was created by Czechs. And I know all this because I saw it in the news and in the article Skoda it says. It is still a Czech car 75% Škoda 25% VW 😉

    A lot better than the Golf 8, particularity the interior looks nicer finished with a crome dsg shifter, glossy black trims and cupholder with a cover. Also the steering wheel looks nicer with the brushed aluminium and glossy black trims.
    The Golf 8 is really a disaster...

    I get that all car manufacturers are moving towards bigger touchscreens and more digital displays. But why does the bezels on that central screen have to be so big? Great review btw, as always.

    • @ThinkCleverAndSmart
      @ThinkCleverAndSmart 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are touch buttons to the left, so it’s not completely blank bezels. The right side is probably like that to keep the screen centred. I like it that way personally. :)

    • @tjoeller1
      @tjoeller1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ThinkCleverAndSmart Good point, but i think it could have been done more elegant, maybe buttons in the bottom of the screen or something. The large side bezels just look so outdate imo :-)

    • @ThinkCleverAndSmart
      @ThinkCleverAndSmart 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, that’s true. It’s probably a way to make it look bigger than it is. It would have definitely been better if they just had a bigger screen in the same formfactor. :)

    The car looks great but those engines worry me. No manual gearbox on the top engines, I sure hope its still an option for the VRS version of this. Performance cars with manual gearboxes are a dying breed. Skoda will have little competition if they keep the manual gearbox on the VRS.

    I think they've done really well with it. Pricing will be key though. Skoda's suffer from poor residuals so PCPs can work out expensive without hefty discounts against list price. I'll be interested to see how well it shifts at launch when pricing will be strong and how long it takes for the big discounts to kick in.
