I am thinking of starting a travel channel. Now, I know it is a relatively safe genre, but I am shadowbanned on the site because I watch a lot of political content and engage with it. What if I want to get out of that and start traveling, will the shadowban prevent me from growth since TH-cam knows who I am??

On Friday I finally reached the requirements to apply to join the YTPP. Just had the acceptance email today! When just starting it can seem like a huge goal, but as Rob says, start with smaller goals like 10-100 subscribers. It's certainly reachable with enough time and effort put into it. Good look youtubers!

For anyone who might find this motivating. It took me almost 3 years to reach 1000 subs. I got the next 1000 in 7 months. It's because the library of content that I had which caused 1000 people to subscribe, well I was just adding to that. Keep making content and try to see what the audience responds to. This is a great video Rob. That mindset is what it is all about and I am so glad you talked about it. I have only been on TH-cam for 3 1/2 months making content and sitting at 1500 of watch time and 260 subscribers. From the get go when we started the channel we wanted to have fun and make content that we would enjoy watching. The subscribers have come but our goal is not the subscribers. Probably the most fun we had was making a video when we hit 66 subscribers and doing a subscriber shout out where we acknowledged everybody who took the time to tune in and watch our contact. 66 subscribers for us felt like a lot of people a house full of people that sat down to watch what we were doing

This video is one of your best! And I love how you coach YTers to just "get on with it". YT also doesn't charge to upload content, so no one is any worse off. Life can seem unfair, but put on your panties, stop winching and move forward! Complainers are excuse-makers.

These videos are quickly becoming my favourite. I don’t know what it is but somehow the way you say things makes things a lot clearer. I will admit to have been focused on subscribers and views for the first month of my channel, but I think that was because I was uploading already produced videos. Now I’m out of them, and making them each week, I can feel myself focusing more on making the best videos that I can. Since then, subs and views have been coming in naturally. 91 subs in six weeks is something I’m proud of. Slow and steady.

My success on TH-cam started from finding a niche. Don't make a 'all in one' channel, it rarely works. Find a niche that is specific so when someone goes to find a specific answer; you are that answer. My channel focusses on Apple watch and customising watch faces. Not many channels did that... So I became the channel to do it. Stop being general and delve deeper into your category! Good luck everyone! 💪🏻

With regards to consistency, do your best to make sure your videos get posted the same time (day of the week; week in week out). That will help to show YT you are consistent. I have been doing my channel about 8 months now, I started of one video a week (Sundays) then twice a week Sundays and Wednesday-Thursday), now I post 4-5 times a week. I have noticed since last (early) December, my views have suddenly started to rocket. I'd say an average to 35-65 views a day. That tells me that YT is definitely pushing my channel more. Best of luck to you on your new journey

Truly agree with most of what your saying Rob. But let me give my opinion since it’s been 2 years 1/2 I’m doing TH-cam. Just because you upload videos or invest in anything you want to create better videos doesn’t justify that you will success one day. I have 6k subs, 350 uploads + and 2 million views and yet, no momentum has ever happened.

what people don't realize about TH-cam putting adverts on your content before you are monetized, It shows TH-cam actually believes there is an audience and a market for that piece of content and the channel it came from. They aren't going to anger their Advertisers by showing ads, on content that doesn't get any views. So once you start hearing from your audience that there are ads on your content, get excited because it means those videos are getting out to viewers, and when that happens, your watch hours are coming in!

Thank you for clearing up the info about the rolling watch time. I knew that the 4,000 watch hours in one year but I didn't know what happens after the 12 months expire. Now I know. I started mine beginning of last May (2020), and currently I stand at 2,049 (612 of those in the last 28 days, so my channel has bloomed since beginning of December yaayyyy lol), but my subs stand at 168.
So as it stands, I think it will be some point after May when I pass monetization. I don't worry too much over it, but I keep on doing my CreepyPasta / spooky story narration channel. After making 63 videos, to date and increasing, there is no way I am going to quit. Not after all the time and effort I have put into the channel for everyone.

Hey Rob there is another source for demonetization, it's called "reused content" (which is not simply only that what TH-cam mentions in a few lines). E.g. you cannot create and post two videos, then post a third video which combines video A and B with a transition. There are a ton of such videos in my niche. Some people get away with it, others may not. For example challenge videos are sometimes posted as individual videos, but then later on are slapped together into one single video with all the same footage of multiple challenges. After asking maaany differently phrased questions to the YPP support, I could get an indirect answer that this type of content would likely violate that policy.
Actually you never made a video about it either, but asked everyone if there is interest. On my channel I had to delete 80 videos just because I was too afraid loosing YPP membership due to this content filtering policy.

Almost 6 months ago or even better around 8-9 months ago, I just uploaded my first set of travel youtube videos. The content was good since one of those videos is still ranked for a keyword but I felt the video was average, I lacked energy and confidence. Over time I was able to nurture and improve my personality drastically, became super confident and been camera shy also decreased. Plus I learnt editing(self taught) , and I am so confident now that I know I can edit some big youtube videos as well. So for me it has been a drastic improvement. Looking to get better and better.

I'm just a geek that loves gaming, sci-fi and fantasy. I'm aware that it's a looong way to monetization (which is ultimate goal that will allow me to dedicate more time to it). Right now, not many people view the content, but those who do - like it (my ratio is 97% positive) and that's what makes me happy.
I did not ask my family to watch the stuff. Only friends that would be interested in it. Sure, it would make some small numbers but ultimately only distracts from the real goal - making sure that other people actually like it. - MarkaN

I've taken all your advice on board, as well as Alan Spicer's, and I'm currently in the works of making a series on videography, and my experiences with it. The weird part is that when I updated my channel to tell everyone what I was doing, I got over 100 views; on each of my videos to this day, I've gotten less than 10 views. I've tried to get the word out to those who will be interested, made the thumbnails as creative and relevant as I can, but still not really getting the traction. You might also say it's something to do with the delivery as well; I'm in my 40's, I'm not an excitable and animated character, I'm just me and that's what people should accept. If not, then I need to think of other content that doesn't involve my narration or my ugly mug.

When I started doing content, I had no idea what monetization was. Was also not looking for subscribers . Just doing it for fun. Most early ones were nothing to do with the business whatsoever. It was only after I got one or two sales inquiries and a subs list growing, I then looked at monetizing and promoting the business more. Now am monetized, but make more ££s from customers inquiring about the products and thankfully making purchases.
