I think the LO freq is 10.7MHz above the rf input. When mixed, the output is 10.7MHz.
Correct. Sums and differences, with the difference frequencies ignored by the IF.
Just some thoughts to share... I doubt that it is a factor in this application, but fishing line is engineered to have a lot of stretch in it. This helps reduce the shock of the fish's jerk that snaps the line. There is a lot of technical engineering to fishing line manufacturing. The braided stuff was the way to go, for this use. There are ferrules made for fishing line. They might be of a better size for this use than the big electric crimp. Of course, a special tool is offered to make a better crimp in fishing line ferrules. I don't know why, but fishing lure equipment is really expensive, for what it is. Similar line, crimps and tools are sold for making wrist bracelets and necklaces. These are found on line, in Walley's craft department, Hobbit Lobbit, Etc. Jeweler's tools are particularly great, on an EE bench, and they are not particularly expensive. Really great for the wire work of bending component pins, etc. HTH. Cheers.

I have an unrestored 2230, the tuning wheel will not go all the way to the right, if I try, it will get stuck there and be hard to bring back to the left. Is it a string issue? I've only opened it once to clean it and spray the controls cause they were crackling.
I don't think the tuning string would be the issue. I would check to see if anything is obstructing the tuning capacitor. Don't spray any kind of cleaner into the tuning capacitor. If it needs lubrication, carefully dab some oil at the contact point. Sprays and lubricants can foul the tuning cap.
Wow.. Been there before with that dial string.. It's always a "oh s%^t" moment... Great use of fishing line.. that stuff will last a long while.. I was real curious however about the issue you had with the 300 ohm vs 75 ohm.. The only device there is the balun which is really just wound wire around a piece of ferrite. Ive never seen those ever go bad but another thing i have found is that attenuator switch develops oxidized contacts and often needs to be de-oxit cleaned which i have found was a big cause of weak gain. If you still have that unit.. give that a simple try....
It's already gone, Frank. Cleaned the switch a few times. May have been soldering between the balun and the terminals.

The antenna input amused me, I have never seen such a defect, do you think the problem is directly in the connector, or is the balun defective?

Hi Tom! Yeah, we should call Interpol about that Murphy bastard.
I suspect that the unit took a lightning surge through the antenna, and that the front end was either repaired or replaced. And I think that may have impacted the balun. They usually don't fail, being nothing more than wire wrapped around a ferrite core. Which is also why it took me so long to find.
Re-string on a 2235B drove me mad, until I figured out that you can simply loosen the LHS bracket on which the pulley sits, complete the circle and only then put it back in place, which then easily rewards you with tensioning the spring.

Ray that tuner string had me getting anxious all the way over here! I have never come into contact with these but was wondering if the factory may have had a spec on the length of the loop with the pointer parts etc, had them premade and just routed them in, say, like you'd do an accessory belt on a car. (?) Great video I enjoy every one of them.
Hmm. I never thought about the factory stringing process. I suspect it was all done manually, and I don't know that having precut strings would speed the process. But maybe they did. CALLING ALL FORMER MARANTZ FACTORY WORKERS! 😁

working on a pioneer sx1010 right now.dealing with those old wire wrap connections make me think that i know exactly what your talking about very tedious sometimes.
@@willievivanco1 I have wire wrap and unwrap tools, but usually there's not enough slack in the wire to strip for new wrap. Some advocate for unsoldering the lugs, but I've had bac luck getting them soldered back in, especially trying to get them to be straight. Like some, I just cut the wires and solder them to the posts.
