    Glad to know you are doing somewhat well! I am currently one of those kids taking everything apart and messing with it, my last project (adding a fan to a Technics SU-V8) didn't end well though. I ended up having two smoking resistors and some part pulling way too much current, but i can not figure out what it is. After almost a month of tinkering and testing, I think i need some help. Would it be possible to contact you and receive a bit of help? Of course only whenever you are free and willing, and id love to maybe give something back to you somehow Cheers

    I have a 1991 Hitachi stereo system and I have a similar type problem with the radio section. When I turn on the radio, there will be static and crackling on all wavebands, but then I will turn the machine off and on again, sometime later and all the stations will work . . . and on all wavebands, but it will then slowly fade out after about two minutes and it's back to static and crackling again. Any idea what might cause this?

      It doesn't need a load to prevent damage, unless it's a tube amp. There may be a small difference is power measured, since most amps are rated as "both channels driven".

    • @raygianelli3612
      @raygianelli3612 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      "Poor audio". is a kind of generic term. But usually when both channels are affected it points to power supply issues. I'd start by making sure that all the voltages are within spec. Be very careful not to short anything with the meter probes, and as always, anything you do with the covers off can expose dangerous voltages, and you do so at your own risk.

    Glad I watched this. Timing couldn't be better. I recently took my old Marantz 2220B and assumed it would have degraded if it worked at all. I took it out of storage and it has a lot of static and I the left channel didn't work. So I bought a refurbishing kit on Ebay and while waiting, I cleaned the inside circuit boards thoroughly, cleaned the pots and re-lamped. I also bought new speakers with high-quality cables and when I turned it on, not only did it look brand new but it also sounded beautiful. It's been so long since I heard it that I'm not sure whether it has degraded or not. Cleaning the pots clearly improved the performance but I don't trust my ears or judgment to assess the sound being so good because the receiver hasn't deteriorated but rather sounded great because of the speakers and better cables. So I am putting off refurbishing until I've given it a good listening, maybe a month or two and make a decision. I'll probably replace the two relay caps since that is easy and are the most expensive and are supposedly higher quality than the originals. After watching this video, it helps to learn that this is not unusual for Marantz receivers. But nothing lasts forever and I could head off a wave of problems if I don't recap. Maybe. I won't last forever either so there's that.

    • @raygianelli3612
      @raygianelli3612 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      FWIW, I just recapped a Marantz 2230 for a friend. I checked all the caps I pulled. Not one was bad. A lot of it has to do with design, quality of the caps use and whether or not the unit was exposed to excessive heat. But as you point out, nothing lasts forever, and no one expected these units to still be in use 50 years later. Just don't expect a night and day sound difference if the old caps are still good. The filter caps are usually the most expensive. Not sure what you mean when you say relay caps.

    • @pasadenaphil8804
      @pasadenaphil8804 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@raygianelli3612 Thanks for your reply. And I did mean filter caps. The new ones provided are much higher voltage which worries me a little but they are probably the ones most likely to give out. A few of the other parts supplied also were higher voltage. It's taking me time to plan out in great detail how I would proceed so it's giving me a lot of time to do a lot of listening before I decide. And advice like yours is going to be a great help along the way. Thanks and keep up the good work.

    New to your channel, i adore the quality of these scopes. I have a 454a without beam at all; a ht issue i think. Without primary acting dangerous what tests can i make.? Thanks for this video!

      Well, I don't know if you saw the second video, but my HT issue was caused by a failed rectifier in the LV supply. Ensure that you have all the low voltages first. Appreciate the thanks!

    While I understand your logic about C701 being a film cap due to the 250v requirement, is the schematic just wrong because it has a polarity marking next to it which implies it is an electrolytic?

      Marantz schematics are notorious for errors, and this looks like yet another. OTOH, I'm grateful for any schematic, errors or not!

    Thank you this is very helpful. I just picked up a tektronix 2235 as well as a 305 DMM so this is going to be my crash course.

      Nice to hear! Joseph, I did a series on oscilloscopes. You can find it here: audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/oscilloscope-basics-part-3-measurement-configurations.847989/

    when replacing caps its a good idea to test outside foil and observe placement

    wax paper caps may still be good if the unit lived in a dry place. not so if humidity was high.

    I am an experience electronics expert. I agree with most of what you say. shotgun replacement of parts is not a fix it all cure for every problem. I just replaced all the electrolytic caps in my pioneer sx-34b i used nichicon high grade japan caps. one change was to up the final stage cathode bypass 50 uf with a 560 uf cap. unit plays perfectly
