I think he still has the ability but whoever has trained him in the late 2000s must have told him stay well away from it. Doesn't even use it for recording.

Jason Newsted on bass was the beast, too much time to hear his Bass melodic lines and out on the little backvocals ! I just think Metallica lost a lot with his departure.

His hate towards James started around Load I think when the label would no longer support Jason's side project only because James said he wouldn't support it, because he didn't want him to have a side band. When he did leave, it was after weighing every possible option of being out of a big band or on his own, and at that point, he had enough. I wonder if he heard any St. Anger ideas, and really felt it wasn't worth it. :P Kinda doubt it though.
