So XCOM is a turn base strategy game where you command a fireteam of soldiers from across the world. You take a movement and then the enemies take there's just like a game of chess. There's also a base building aspect of the game where you build new rooms and research new weapons, armours etc. You can also fully customize you're soldiers from changing their name, voice, language, hair, skin, face, and clothing which is greatly expanded in XCOM 2. If a solider dies they stay dead so it can be very difficult when you lose a really great solider who you put so much effect into crafting and you do really get attached to you're soldiers as well. All of this of course is greatly expanded in the sequel where soldiers can even form special friendships and gain bonuses when finding alongside each other.
XCOM had two endings you win or you lose. From running out of soldiers to losing the support and funding of nations to just straight up not doing the missions there's so many ways you can lose the game. So with XCOM 2 the canonical ending was we lost this created a really different experience where we XCOM were the underdogs fighting in the shadows against the alien forces who've taken over the world. The "good" ending in which we won could also be canon as maybe after the events of XCOM 1 the Aliens came back and won so I guess you could argue that it doesn't matter what endings are canon we lost regardless. XCOM 2 is set 20 years after the first game so it's a pretty big jump but if XCOM 3 does ever release I can see it being a game about humanity working together with the good aliens.
The XCOM games go back to the original from 1994 followed by Terror from the Deep which was pretty much the first game but set underwater and thenX-COM: Apocalypse a very cool game set decades after the first two games. Instead of being set around the Earth this game took place in a large mega city inspired by Mega City one from Judge Dredd. Instead of gaining support of other nations you had to gain support of different Corporations who would supply you with unique items and gear. The city was fully active as well it was kind of like a top down view where you can see cars driving around with police and even gang members. Buildings could be destroyed if damaged and it just felt like Sim City mixed with XCOM a cool concept that I'd love to see in an XCOM 3 just modern.

    • @joshualopez7035
      @joshualopez7035 ปีที่แล้ว +4

There is a game that takes place after XCOM 2 called XCOM Chimera Squad, where instead of fighting against the alien races, you're a police squad consisting of multiple races fighting against gangs and cults in a city. Instead of managing different countries, you have to manage the panic in different sections of the city to keep being funded. The biggest difference is that you have preset characters that you use in your squad. This allows them to have personalized voices and personalities, as well as unique skills and abilities that only they can learn. The maps are also smaller, usually having multiple small maps in series with breaching options between them.

@@HannaHsOverInvested Oh absolutely, in the beginning many of the people who didn't know the nature of the game but saw editable characters in a game set in near future would name and model them after the friends and family... now imagine watching your dearest dying under your command - strangled, shot, infected by a parasite and turned into zombies, mind controlled etc...
And the game was always famous for it's brutal difficulty. It had a difficulty choice but if you picked normal or higher you were in for a challenge. You would definitely bury some people. That is why in the new ones have difficulty of "Easy" "Medium" "Hard" and "Classic".

XCOM is my favorite game franchise. So many people kept losing XCOM: Enemy Unknown that the devs decided, "OK, that's the canon ending... XCOM 2 is set after you lost XCOM EU." Instead of being members of humanity's last stand, you're now leading a rebellion against the conquerors. It also has this fun thing where you can put your friends into the games.... they have a VERY robust character creation system where you can name and create soldiers that look like your friends. Nothing is better than finding and recruiting your best friend, and nothing is worse than sending them into a bad fight that they don't walk away from. My best friend from high school was a FANTASTIC sniper for a long time in EU, haha.

X-COM (the old games) were my jam back in 95! For a short one, check the intro to X-COM: Terror from the Deep.
A spiritual successor to the old X-COM games was the UFO series early/mid 2000s. The intro to the first one, UFO Aftermath, is also quite short but sets the tone very well.
What's missing from the new XCOM (notice the missing hyphen) titles is Chimera Squad, which takes place after XCOM 2. Also worth a look is the intro to XCOM 2: War of the Chosen. WotC was the largest expansion pack to XCOM 2 and really elevated the game to another level.
Also, since you noticed the tagline about the developers: In Civilization V there actually was a buildable unit called "XCOM Squad". Just a little cross-promotion on Firaxis' part.
I appreciate these random collection videos because it lets us see you react to many different franchises which can't fill hours all on their own.

I love UFO series, and can only recommend it. The Aftermath nicely portrays the Apocalypse war where Humans try to understand what is happening and trying to fight back (and it have 2 endings). Aftershock is similar to XCOM 2 in that 50 years after the first contact, humans evolved (Cyborgs and Psionics), but due to post-apo isolation lost a lot of tech and now thanks to circumstances tries to regain that tech, learn about history and reunite Earth (including defending it from old and new threats). And probably mine most favourite Afterlight, that takes place at the same time as Aftershock, but on Mars, where remnants of human colonists try to terraform Mars into new home (as the Earth was supposed lost when they departed from Earth), where around 20 colonists struggle against the planet itself. As you terraform the Mars, the whole planet view is greener, with new rivers and oceans :)
I finished the whole trilogy multiple times on hardest difficulty, and even thou Aftermath is a lot about RNG, I love the fact that the combat is real-time and you have 100% hit chance on most enemies when you stand next to them (unlike XCOM 2 where you miss even in that situation a lot). But I played only XCOM 2 when it was released, so I would like to play the whole series one day too.

There is a certain way to appreciate Hideo Kojima's work and Artistic Aesthetics.
He is the Gaming worlds version of Quentin Tarantino, not in the violence and gore departement, but more in the fact that he has a Vision of his Art and the kind of story and experience he wants to share.
Kojima's work is the kinda thing that you either Love it or Hate it.
I mean the Metal Gear series are games about Action Espionnage and Tactical Infiltration, but its also a social commentary about the Industrio-Militaristic nature of our modern world and the hyper consumerism of Capitalism and also a reflexion of what makes people who they are and if they have a Freewill or if we are bound to remake the mistakes of their forfathers.
So, its not for everyone, BUT it is interesting and always something to behold.

About the Death Stranding 2 trailer:
Hideo Kojima is a brilliant madman, his trailers never explain anything and since the game isn't out yet there really is not a lot to go on.
The blonde haired woman (Lea Seydoux) was a prominent character in the first game and the shirtless guy (Norman Reedus) with long blonde/white(?) hair was the main character. The baby could be the baby from the pod since its heavily implied, but then again you never know with Kojima. Also the creepy robot/cyborg character from the last scene could tease a return of Troy Bakers villain from the first game.

XCOM 2 follows the bad ending of XCOM 1, where the XCOM Project loses and the aliens take over earth, and starts using humanity for nefarious purposes under the guise of charity and helping us further. The remains of XCOM are acting as a guerilla force hunting down ADVENT before the slow genocide of humanity is finished.

  • @mohaa556
    @mohaa556 ปีที่แล้ว

So the thing about xcom's story:
In the first game Enemy Unknown (or the expansion Enemy within), an unknown alien force starts to invade Earth. As a response to the invasion Project Xcom gets activated. Xcom is an international special forces unit with the sole purpose to stop an alien invasion (there is actually a third person shooter The Bureau: XCOM Declassified which kinda explains that this isn't the first time aliens tried to invade, but last time they were stopped, hence why humanity prepares for their return by making xcom).
In XCom 2 the story picks up years later, assuming that the canon ending of the first game is that you failed horribly and the aliens took control of the whole planet and are leading it under the name "Advent". In this game you pretty much play as a resistance group who tries to break the control of the aliens over humanity.

They broke the no-no rules and got together and made the Nephalem (you saw their first child, son, and first Nephalem) in the first Diablo IV Trailer (the black eye'd giant guy who said "Blessed Mother" as it's actually his mom) his name is Rathma.
Lilith wants to use all her children (all Nephalem and mortals) as weapons in her great war against Heaven and to eventually rule over all. Rathma sided with her over Daddy Inarius and summoned her back from the void in the first D4 trailer you watched.
Inarius (you'd think is the good guy right...angel....right....) fears the Nephalem, wants to see Sanctuaries destruction, and the end of the mortal race to prevent them from becoming weapons against Heaven. (So essentially - he wants us dead)

XCOM is definitely an _accessible_ game in that it's turn-based and grid-based, basically a digital board game. On the other hand, it's also a _game_ game, where what little story is presented during gameplay is really just an excuse for gameplay. Imagine playing chess, but every time you play, the game board is a little bit different, you and the opponent each have different sets of pieces, and there's a sci-fi coat of paint over the whole thing.
In some ways you make your own stories. When one of my friends was playing XCOM 2, he named two of the characters after me and my partner. My friend would regale us with stories of the tight spots that our characters managed to squeeze out of, and he was excited when my and my partner's in-game selves formed a bond. My friend made it his mission to make our characters reach maximum bond and finish the game without letting either of them die.
In case you ever feel like listening to someone play the game, do a good job roleplaying, and also talking through their (sometimes hilariously bad) moves, I recommend Many A True Nerd's XCOM playthrough. He also named characters after himself, his partner, and their cat. Definitely a comedy of errors, but dude kept on truckin' and made it to the end.

Firaxis, who made the 2 X-Com games that you watched trailers for today, instead of making X-com 3 next, just released a new game in December 2022 in conjunction with Marvel. It's called Marvel's Midnight Suns. It takes some of its premise and name from a 90s Occult Marvel comic book event that included characters like Ghost Rider, Blade (who was played by Wesley Snipes in movies) and Morbius (the character who Jared Leto just played in his own movie) and others. The game adds some Avengers characters to the mix also, to sell, and it has some of the same tactical, almost chess like combat of the XCOM games, but adds in a card element to randomize what powers you have access to, per round. It also lets you create a character, and you fight along side the marvel heroes. In the trailers they use the default created character which is a woman with long dark hair and 2 swords, but it could be male or female, and you can change the look. Also, there is a segment of the game where you live with the heroes and develop friendships with them, which is optional, but the better friends you are, may lead to more options in combat. Here's a trailer if you ever want to see it.

I went through the whole first one and I don't think I could give you a good summary in less than a solid half hour. Going to war with all the forces of Hell in Diablo makes a lot more sense.

XCOM is a pretty cool strategy game
In the first you control the XCOM, an international organization specialized to deal with extraterrestrial threats, and try to defend the world from the Alien invaders.
And although you can strike back the initial invasion force, in part 2 you learn that they were immediately followed by another invasion force that took out XCOM headquarters and then proceeded to trick humanity into thinking they were peaceful, while doing shady stuff behind their backs. They basically control the world at that point.
And then in XCOM 2, you're basically organizing the resistance operating from a new mobile HQ.
The game combines base building and army managing, where you can recruit, train and customize your soldiers, with a turn based strategy shooter where you control said soldiers and send them against the alien forces. You can also permanently loose those soldiers if you're not careful or luck just isn't on your side.
It also has an important resource management part. You have money and different minerals, and have to decide on what to spend it, and you often have to decide what mission to send your troops on (or if you should send them at all) and what mission you can't respond to, giving you positive and negative effects.
(To illustrate this a bit better, in the first game, missions always came in sets of 3, you could only respond to one of them, and the 2 you couldn't respond to would create terror in the countries the missions were located in. If the terror rose high enough, that country could even leave and you'd get no more funding from them.)

Truth about the Death Stranding 2 stuff is that we won't understand anything until it drops. I watched all trailers for DS1 and understood nothing. Nope there was no peace in Xcom 2, the aliens won. I think Xcom2 was the only sequel out there where you canonically straight up lost the first game. Xcom is also a great flag trivia game. as soldiers can be form a ton of different countries. They even did this thing where if a character was from one of the countries the game was dubbed in you can have that language in that soldier's voice lines.

XCOM was a 1990's franchise that rocked, hard. The 2012 version was a remake. It was different, simpler... but though I disliked the idea initially... it won me over HARD.
The order of releases, storywise is this:
XCOM: Enemy Unknown (first game of the remake)
XCOM: Enemy Within (DLC expansion that adds new content, story, and abilities into the first game)
XCOM 2 (Second Game. Whilst possible to win the first game, canonically, Earth was conquered and YOU were captured. And rescued 20 years later to lead the resistance)
XCOM 2: Alien Hunters & Chen's Last Gift (released almost together, 1st and 2nd DLC expansions with light lore additions, extra missions and new tactics and gear. )
XCOM 2: Wrath of the Chosen (Third DLC expansion that adds new content, story and characters to XCOM 2. Much more lore heavy).
Chimera Squad (NOT XCOM 3! But takes place after XCOM 2 and is based in a single city as law enforcement rather than a planet wide defence or rebellion... can skip if you want...).
You could watch the trailers in release order but if you are doing the cutscenes and cinematics then I would do videos that collected all the DLC content too. (XCOM enemy unknown with enemy within included and XCOM 2 with all three DLC content included.
    Enjoy water you do. :D

    To help clear things up.
The canon ending to XCOM: Enemy Unknown is that humanity gets invaded by a collective of aliens led by an alien race called the Elders. Humanity fights against the invasion valiantly, but ultimately loses.
(Fun fact, this fate was decided by actual in game statistics. The Win rate of the game while playing on Commander Plus difficulty was so low, almost nobody was able to complete the game before the fail state was achieved.)
In XCOM 2, you are playing as the remnants of the XCOM project, vastly out gunned and out manned, you have to fight against the alien overlords and kick them off the planet.
Also, I highly recommend you watch the 40 minute video, or just XCOM 2 content, ESPECIALLY XCOM 2: WAR OF THE CHOSEN! War of the Chosen has 4 actors from Star Trek: TNG in it that voice act certain characters. You'll have to figure out who. 😉

These literally are like 2 out of 3 of my top 5 games of all time.
XCOM EU and XCOM 2 along with it's expansion War of the Chosen (WTOC) has gotten a lot of hours from me still to this day. Turn based strategy, with fully customizable soldiers and weapons. You research and capture the Aliens from Advent and improve your army.
XCOM 2 WOTC is a must watch as it added so much to the story narrative. I'm still playing today especially now with Mods I've added super soldiers and weapons from other games like Mass Effect.
Haven't played Death Stranding at all but it's concepts look cool and it's story seem deep especially since Guillermo del Toro is the director.
Diablo 4 is a buy for me and I'll tell you why because like Warhammer it's more surreal. Unlike 40k where technically everyone is evil in the players mind, in Diablo you are the Hero (The Nephalem) who are fighting back the Darkness of ferocious Demons and corrupted Angels.
Both it and 40k show that war with these forces Will be Brutal and sometimes if you want to save the world or even change it a bit you gotta get down in the trenches with the enemy.

The X-Com series is soooo good and I feel like it doesn't get the attention it deserves. In Enemy Unknown, and its expansion Enemy Within, you are leading a global defense force in defending earth from an invasion of an unknown alien force. Since many of its players like to challenge themselves with higher difficulty and thus many games end in failure, the developers decided that losing the war was the canon ending. XCom 2 picks up 20 years after 'unification' with the aliens. You lead a rebel faction in uncovering the lies pulled over the eyes of the general public and taking back Earth from its new alien overlords.

I like two story details of Xcom 2, one of which can be easily missed - the open mission is about rescuing the Commander aka the player themselves , in almost all the cutscenes the other characters address the player directly as if they are in the room with them and your told that you lost the war 20 years ago and you having been hooked up to some alien machine all this time. very shortly after that you research the chip they pulled out of your head and they say that the machine was running a simulation of some sorts and you see a fuzzy image of part of the data they collected... and its a combat scene from the first game - so they had a "oh all those times you did finish the game and saved the world did happen....just it was all part of the simulation that the aliens put you in to harvest combat data on how humanity fights and use it against the remain earth forces"
This is sort of confirmed when not only are we told that the data was being fed back into the new hybrid clone soldiers but since they pulled the commander from the machine the alien forces troops have become greatly disorganized (basically a reason why the aliens that have been in charge for 20 years dont just come and wipe you out the next day).

    XCOM is awesome.
If you want to experience the game and ALSO relax, I'd recommend the Pete Complete playthrough. He could totally sell himself as an ASMR channel.... He's an absolute monster though, so you'll miss out on the existential dread of ACTUALLY playing (and losing. A lot)
The original XCOM games were made in the 90s and are still shockingly good, The opening cutscene still looks fantastic (it's done in cartoon style, so the pixel art still looks on point)
Those were even more "horror" themed, with you as commander forced to expend your men as cannon fodder against better armed and armoured aliens through the early game (your squad of 10 soldiers often taking losses against an alien crew of 3-4) until you unlock advanced tech (and your soldiers gain experience) and you're taking out battleships of 30 elite alien troops with a single badass that you raised from cannon fodder and you're totally attached to. Until he gets a random grenade to the face.
The "new" ones do a great job of balancing fun and difficulty, but the do sadly lack that emergent gameplay/story telling (I still remember a pair of captains on my squad that were both randomly named "Robinson" and those brothers were complete badasses... and that's a game I played 23 years ago...)
I'm sure you'll love just watching the cutscenes though, if watching gameplay isn't your thing.

Absolutely LOVE the XCOM games. The writers of the games wrote themselves into a bit of a narrative hole with the XCOM Enemy Unknown/Within game where a sequel wouldn't make sense.... if you won. So they checked the statistics for the game. Majority of people lost the game LOL it can be pretty hard sometimes. So they made XCOM 2's story as though humanity lost the war in the first game. The news has propaganda about aliens and they celebrate unification day etc. but it's like an alien police state.

    I Survived Newfoundland.
Minor mechanical spoilers for one mission 2/3rds of the way through X-Com 1:
(Most XCom missions are randomized, but there's some story missions that always turn up. Newfoundland is a canonical shitshow, a military disaster, and a compulsory story mission. It's impossible to win. Your only option is to retreat once you realize that and try and save your soldiers. As a result "I survived newfoundland" is a meme among the community and merchandise sells about it.). For players going in blind, it's easy enough to consider Newfoundland the place where Humanity lost the war, as if you don't know it's coming and aren't quick to realize it, it's where you will get a game over and lose all your men and equipment. so it's also relevant to X-Com 2 and the rebellion as a meme.

Oh this has probably already been said in the 196 comments.
XCOM trailer really slaps much harder, for the fans of the original games. I spent many an hour in front of a computer with a childhood friend 'co-op' playing that game. So seeing elements from those memories being brought forward 20 years later. The feels.
XCOM2 Trailer. They were really creative with this game. A lot of people will fail to complete the game (first XCOM remake) successfully on their first run (at least without "save scumming"). So they took that into account and for context, the 2nd game makes it Lore that you lost in the first game. The first mission in XCOM2 really drives that one home too. So effectively the aliens conquered Earth and subjugated the human race while all the while convincing the general public that they are benevolent. This places you as the run and gun rebel faction trying to resist and drive out the enemy occupation. XCOM2 also has a fun way of incorporating the role of the player, the "Commander".
As always, I hope you enjoy your day!

if you do XCOM2 cutscenes, i highly recommend finding a video with War of the Chosen cutscenes in it, or at least one separate video for later that ONLY has WotC cutscenes in it? whichever is easier
WotC is an expansion that's practically woven into the story, it gives extra lore and adds extra characters and factions, both good or bad; it doesn't have too many cutscenes on its own, but they're great additions
but either way, vanilla XCOM2 is great too, i think there is a 2:40hr video with all cutscenes (and gameplay that has mission-specific dialogue, among other things) which covers basically all of it

Ah yes, Xcom or as I like to call it: Murphy's Law The Game. A game so frustrating and yet so addicting at the same time.
You most definitely don't know about Xcom but think of it like a strategic board game where one wrong move could make everything go horribly for you; but even when you made the right move, fate would say 'nuh uh' and everything went horribly wrong anyway and you would have to deal with it. Highly difficult yet highly rewarding and satisfying once you beat everything the game throws at you.
And I would like to mention something that is famous (or infamous) about xcom. Your soldiers can and WILL miss high chance shots. If you don't know, there's a hit chance in Xcom that tells you how likely the guy your controlling are gonna do damage to the enemies be it 15% or 90% or something like that but it is unreliable that you might as well pray before telling your soldiers to take a shot.

The Diablo series has one of the best, coolest stories and imigery there are. Full of gray moralities and characters. Yes, that was an archangel. Diablo has all of them, and the setting is an eternal, literal war between heaven and hell. Most angels are depicted extremely arrogant and not willing to help mankind repell hell's forces even though their goals are to just take heaven over, for which they first have to go through earth.
We don't know yet, but it's possible that that archangel has brainwashed those humans to march into hell (and walk on fire...) just to serve as his meatshields so he can take out Lilith. Worst is, if the angels could all get involved, they'd easily snap all of hell out of existence.
