I moved back home to 🇳🇦 3 months ago after 2 years of working in Europe, one of the best decision I ever made, there is no place like home or rather no place like Southern Africa.
Zimbabweans are educated and so hardworking. It’s so sad to see them building up a foreign country which is so hostile. Life in the diaspora is not easy, work work work, bills, bills, bills. The loneliness and the weather is depressing. I wish you well in Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 in whatever business you venture into, my hope is for many others will follow to help build the country.

Well done young lady. We have relocated to Zim jan 2022 after 34years in the UK. Yes there are challenges, but on the overall there are challenges everywhere you go in life. We are excited to start our new venture back home, the food, the clean air, it’s priceless. For the country to change; we have to go back and in-still the work ethics we have learned whilst on foreign land. Any change will come come from us. You can’t invest your experience and expertise in someone else’s country. That’s why we dislike our own, rather than bring those things we value into our own space. I salute you young lady, may more of us start thinking like this, and with our education and work ethic, we will become a force to be reckoned.

Im in Zimbabwe, never left. I tried telling this to my peers kuti no one will save and build Zimbabwe except Zimbabweans, long story short ndakatukwa zvekuti I no longer have a relationship with them 😂. The same people would get mad that I’m thriving in Zimbabwe and not teaching them how yet ndaitovaudza exactly how I’m doing it. Guys ka, kuti ubudirire muZimbabwe first and foremost dada nezvauri, love Zimbabwe beyond the politics and start effecting change on a micro scale. It starts with small things, kusarasa mapepa pese pese, building a sense of community, being examplary etc.
I love conversations like these and I wish I could point twitter trolls to here. Twitter is a mean and vile place with SA vs Zim and it's sickening. I'm South African and I have awesome Zim buddies and just through conversation and openness you see families being scattered around the world, Australia, UK, US, missing weddings, funerals, births so I try my best to make them feel as close to home as possible even though Zim is just next door to SA but home is home hey. I'm super proud of you and I wish you many happy days. Kuzolunga guys, not today, not next week, maybe not next year but it's gon be aaaaayt

Mental health over everything, you made a good choice. Sometimes people don’t understand the pressure and the loneliness that comes with being abroad. The joy of going outside and hear people speaking shona and just being able to visit your family and friends anytime is underrated.

So to those who grew up in luxuries in the continent goodluck to you fellas. I lived in Botswana for 14 years and I was always reminded that you’re a mothebele/kwerekwere/motswakwa/foreigner. I’m here in Canada few years down the line I’m a citizen with good job earning good bucks and I never bribe anyone or been harassed by the police. I’ve been stopped once by the police in 8yrs.
I understand you very well. Its so depressing waking up 9 months out 12, to cold and dark days. I love sunshine and love being close to my family. The routine out here can seriously affect your mental health. I'm also planning to relocate back home to Ghana latest December 2022. This life is not for some of us

I get this, I really do. I am coming up to my 8th year here and I am just unfulfilled. I am so homesick it’s crazy…the novelty of the uk has worn off and I just want my parents and home esp with covid and the travel restrictions . But I can’t just relocate yet, need to finish my training - I have a better chance here than in Botswana but I get this… I am planning on like a 3-4 months break where I just go home, think about my life etc maybe that will do me good and realign my vision/hopes and dreams.

We might want to leave home and go to the diaspora,then when we get here people don’t talk about things like the emotional stress we go through,racism,no social life,just work and home….it’s an emotional roller coaster. I’m a Mum of 2, daycare so expensive ,it’s just hectic not having that family support from anagogo,aunties etc so I’m Happy for you for going back home and all the best❤️❤️

I can absolutely see your side and I have so much respect for that decision. I honestly feel settled, I have my lovely husband and my job allows me to do what I want. I deeply miss my family especially parents and siblings but they need financial support. Therefore, I would rather be here supporting my loved ones financially while my husband pursues his carrier. I hope you found the peace of mind that you were looking for.
Insightful video, well-articulated thoughts. I've been in Scandinavia for 19 years myself, and as I grow older, the thought of moving back to Zim, at least for a while grows stronger. We have an ever-shortening and unpredictable time on this earth. In the end, spending precious time with family is irreplaceable.
You took a good decision because you are still young you can manage. I am also in the uk but I am far much older. So I cant manage to go home. Being in UK for too long I wont cope living in Zimbabwe. I miss the sun and people but hey Id rather take vitamin D🤣🤣🤣 my. my frustration will be the politics and day to day activities. You know the work ethics here compared to Zimbabwe.The fact that people want to be bribed to do their work and they act as if they are doing you a favour gets me. It means in Zim Im bound to be frustrated on daily basis. I bought my house here and bought life and funeral policies . So Im done

I'm exploring the logistics of transitioning back home, and this video gave me food for thought. I'm an accountant as well, but will be working in other businesses. You should also consider looking into establishing a consultancy service that will link professional services with diaspora entrepreneurs seeking to invest in Zimbabwe. Can definitely relate, made my "move" in August 2021 and though it was a step back, it's one of the best decisions I've ever made and I know three years down the line It'll all make perfect sense. Good for those who can move back on these very luxurious reasons. I personally CAN'T risk a move back to Zim because my toddler has a life threatening brain disease and I don't believe there are sufficient medical facilities in Zim for a better quality of life for my child - so not for me and yup to each their own!
Yeah I can totally get where you are coming from zim may not have all the medical facilities that you need. The difference is in my situation my decision was solely based on myself and there wasn't much to lose from leaving ,but circumstances differ so what works for each person is the best.

I can relate to your experience. 2021 busy season left me wondering whether I was a human being or a machine, working 41 hours waya waya no sleep, putting food on the table but then forgetting to eat at all bcoz have to immediately rush back to my desk to fix something that crossed my mind. @@melmel7011 They understand, & they don't really directly force u to do that, but the workload & deadlines you get will stress you out, even if you try to sleep u will wake up bcoz u know the following day u will be on the hot seat answering questions. If u sleep you get a nightmares 😉 😄

I repatriated to SA from the UK. My friends back in the UK almost fainted with shock. I have to say it’s turned into a living nightmare, though I have to add I had no infrastructure or support system. In fact my Zim husband left me, to stay in the UK, also when the COVID thing came. But, in spite of the huge drama and struggle to adjust, I have never doubted (only, as you say, I was in the UK almost two decades, when I miss the UK, especially London) my decision. I just feel “home”. And it feels grounded. Even in the UK I was (the only white in my clique) part of the African expat community. I think some people just have Africa in their hearts. I have a mostly African fb community page and I’m trying to establish an African community support (because I was in the African community, I have to admit my African heart is wider now than just SA) I’m currently breaking my mind to see how I can turn that into a business.

I have been in Canada for almost 4 years and I will tell you I hate it most of the times. It's lonely and depressing most of the times. I really wish to just wake up and go see my family as I wish. I'm greatful for the exposure I get and the friends but it's not the same. The foreigner feeling will never go away and others would never understand. I understand every single thing you just said
Aww thank you, but hey sometimes you will need to work for a bit maybe to support your family but it will be well eventually you will also come back home when things fall in place.

The grey cold skies used to depress me too, when I lived in Redland, Bristol. You don't see the sun for months. And then the incessant rain. Umbrella all the time. Crazy weather!The meat and fruit don't taste great either. It's the sun that makes food taste good. Zim food tastes really great 👌
Sheila Gotora: You are right, the fruits and food here taste fake and not very palatable. You can’t even find any nice tasting mangoes in the supermarkets, you have to go elsewhere for these.
I was raised in UK and left back to South Africa for similar reasons. You're smart woman and figured out what most will realise when it's too late. Rather build where you are than procrastinate in a temporary country. Alot of people think "I'll save X amount then go back home" and never do. You need to learn how to survive in the environment you wish to be in. People saying they'll go back to Zim in 5 years are lying to themselves because in 5 years they still didn't learn what they needed to learn to survive in Zim. All the best.
Brilliant, this was needed thank you for popping up in my recommendations. For me l came here when l was 10 years and lm now 26 kinda used to the hectic lonely lifestyle but from me memory my life as a child in Zimbabwe was 100% better. Life is too short to be miserable, getting by and wasting time no feeling alive.

Some of us saw this coming a long time ago, packed our bags never to return, 2008 to be precise. The best desicion i ever made, hands down. Plus i always wanted to be part of the change that was/ is coming to africa. Read the writing on the wall, europe and north america are the past. Africa is the future. Besides, some of the poverty and dejection i saw in parts of U. K. Can only be described as fourth world and not even comparable to africa. Welcome home, boys and girls and be prepared to receive your blessings.

Maybe you've already considered this but just wanted to point out that you have the exact profile of someone ppl would trust to help them with their own transition back home. Navigating property markets and business set up etc. That could be a good potential revenue stream for someone with your skillset and knowledge of what standards ppl are looking for. I want to go live in Japan, and a few countries in Europe, just to learn their methods of doing things, like how did they get to be better than us, economy wise, infrastructure wise, health wise. Fully agree! I’ve been in the UK for 21 years now and I feel that I have acquired enough knowledge in different fields to go back and equip my people. Africa is going to the moon and I wanna be part of the journey.
This was so well explained, we all love Africa, the goal is honestly to be at home with all your loved ones❤❤ However everyone is now everywhere, and one day we will talk about the traumas of growing up without your parents because they are in the UK, or having to leave your family in order to be able to provide for them, For most people they honestly have no other choice, its either be far from home, or go home and starve. I am however happy for those who have the option to be home with their family.

Thank you for sharing this. I've entertained the idea to move overseas but when I did my maths it just didn't add up financially. I live on $1600 in SA, with a family of 4... I'd live on $4000 if I moved overseas. I'm an engineer. I could earn a good amount but if I'm not employed that's a lot of money to lose every month. It could even be way more! I also realise I'd only save about $1000... If I factor in travelling and emergencies... It's gone. 1 year savings is just 3months unemployed while. Here if I work for a year, I have enough for 18 months unemployed... And I can hustle also!
Yes thank you for doing the maths and sharing that's how I look at it. In your own country you can do side hustles and make more as there is less barrier to starting a small business.

Ngl I live in the UK and my life is here now. I moved from zim when I was 13 and I’m now 35. A few of my family are here or either Australia of the US. I still have family in Zimbabwe but even they don’t want to be there. I love going to visit Zimbabwe and that home forever but my life is here and I have children here and my career is good here and I worked in accountancy. I’m ok where I am. But good on your girl for moving back

We might want to leave home and go to the diaspora,then when we get here people don’t talk about things like the emotional stress we go through,racism,no social life,just work and home….it’s an emotional roller coaster. I’m a Mum of 2, daycare so expensive ,it’s just hectic not having that family support from anagogo,aunties etc so I’m Happy for you for going back home and all the best❤️❤️

Hi, Im a South African who also travelled and came home. I always feel sad for Zimbabweans who decide not to go home. Id rather be poor in my home country!

I honestly feel settled, I have my lovely husband and my job allows me to do what I want. I deeply miss my family especially parents and siblings but they need financial support. Therefore, I would rather be here supporting my loved ones financially while my husband pursues his carrier. I hope you found the peace of mind that you were looking for.

Insightful video, well-articulated thoughts. I've been in Scandinavia for 19 years myself, and as I grow older, the thought of moving back to Zim, at least for a while grows stronger. We have an ever-shortening and unpredictable time on this earth. In the end, spending precious time with family is irreplaceable.

You know the work ethics here compared to Zimbabwe.The fact that people want to be bribed to do their work and they act as if they are doing you a favour gets me. Can definitely relate, made my "move" in August 2021 and though it was a step back, it's one of the best decisions I've ever made and I know three years down the line It'll all make perfect sense. Good for those who can move back on these very luxurious reasons. I personally CAN'T risk a move back to Zim because my toddler has a life threatening brain disease and I don't believe there are sufficient medical facilities in Zim for a better quality of life for my child - so not for me and yup to each their own!
Yeah I can totally get where you are coming from zim may not have all the medical facilities that you need. The difference is in my situation my decision was solely based on myself and there wasn't much to lose from leaving ,but circumstances differ so what works for each person is the best.

I can relate to your experience. 2021 busy season left me wondering whether I was a human being or a machine, working 41 hours waya waya no sleep, putting food on the table but then forgetting to eat at all bcoz have to immediately rush back to my desk to fix something that crossed my mind. That's not life!
That life is difficult but we keep trying again maybe we will eventually find something a bit stable

I repatriated to SA from the UK. My friends back in the UK almost fainted with shock. I have to say it’s turned into a living nightmare, though I have to add I had no infrastructure or support system. In fact my Zim husband left me, to stay in the UK, also when the COVID thing came. But, in spite of the huge drama and struggle to adjust, I have never doubted (only, as you say, I was in the UK almost two decades, when I miss the UK, especially London) my decision. I just feel “home”. And it feels grounded. Even in the UK I was (the only white in my clique) part of the African expat community. I think some people just have Africa in their hearts.
I have a mostly African fb community page and I’m trying to establish an African community support (because I was in the African community, I have to admit my African heart is wider now than just SA) I’m currently breaking my mind to see how I can turn that into a business.

I have been in Canada for almost 4 years and I will tell you I hate it most of the times. It's lonely and depressing most of the times. I really wish to just wake up and go see my family as I wish. I'm greatful for the exposure I get and the friends but it's not the same. The foreigner feeling will never go away and others would never understand. I understand every single thing you just said
Aww thank you, but hey sometimes you will need to work for a bit maybe to support your family but it will be well eventually you will also come back home when things fall in place.

The grey cold skies used to depress me too, when I lived in Redland, Bristol. You don't see the sun for months. And then the incessant rain. Umbrella all the time. Crazy weather!The meat and fruit don't taste great either. It's the sun that makes food taste good. Zim food tastes really great 👌

I was raised in UK and left back to South Africa for similar reasons. You're smart woman and figured out what most will realise when it's too late. Rather build where you are than procrastinate in a temporary country. Alot of people think "I'll save X amount then go back home" and never do. You need to learn how to survive in the environment you wish to be in. People saying they'll go back to Zim in 5 years are lying to themselves because in 5 years they still didn't learn what they needed to learn to survive in Zim. All the best.

Brilliant, this was needed thank you for popping up in my recommendations. For me l came here when l was 10 years and lm now 26 kinda used to the hectic lonely lifestyle but from me memory my life as a child in Zimbabwe was 100% better. Life is too short to be miserable, getting by and wasting time no feeling alive.

Some of us saw this coming a long time ago, packed our bags never to return, 2008 to be precise. The best desicion i ever made, hands down. Plus i always wanted to be part of the change that was/ is coming to africa. Read the writing on the wall, europe and north america are the past. Africa is the future. Besides, some of the poverty and dejection i saw in parts of U. K. Can only be described as fourth world and not even comparable to africa. Welcome home, boys and girls and be prepared to receive your blessings.

Let's hope you will find a place that let's you exercise your expertise and grow. Travelling is indeed great. I want to go live in Japan, and a few countries in Europe, just to learn their methods of doing things, like how did they get to be better than us, economy wise, infrastructure wise, health wise. Then implement it home and grow. Africa as a whole we need to improve our systems and lives, so when people from abroad come back they should be given a chance to show us what they learnt. This was so well explained, we all love Africa, the goal is honestly to be at home with all your loved ones❤❤ However everyone is now everywhere, and one day we will talk about the traumas of growing up without your parents because they are in the UK, or having to leave your family in order to be able to provide for them, For most people they honestly have no other choice, its either be far from home, or go home and starve. I am however happy for those who have the option to be home with their family.

Thank you for sharing this. I've entertained the idea to move overseas but when I did my maths it just didn't add up financially. I live on $1600 in SA, with a family of 4... I'd live on $4000 if I moved overseas. I'm an engineer. I could earn a good amount but if I'm not employed that's a lot of money to lose every month. It could even be way more! I also realise I'd only save about $1000... If I factor in travelling and emergencies... It's gone. 1 year savings is just 3months unemployed while. Here if I work for a year, I have enough for 18 months unemployed... And I can hustle also!

Ngl I live in the UK and my life is here now. I moved from zim when I was 13 and I’m now 35. A few of my family are here or either Australia of the US. I still have family in Zimbabwe but even they don’t want to be there. I love going to visit Zimbabwe and that home forever but my life is here and I have children here and my career is good here and I worked in accountancy. I’m ok where I am. But good on your girl for moving back
