    My paternal grandfather fought in WW1. He came away with a purple heart after being shot during a gas attack. He apparently spent months in recovery, and when he got back into the US, his dad basically told him he had spent too much time on his back and needed to get a job...

      My great grandfather, a first-generation Irish-American, somehow proved his worth during training to promote him to 2nd Lt (the US army was desperate for officers and would try to pick out good enough soldiers to promote before sendoff) and commanded a machinegun company. He saw the Argonne offensive and was at the receiving end of many gas attacks. He got to know French soldiers really well and formed a bond with some of them, as well as being very protective of his own men. After the war he served as an instructor on machinegun operations, then retired from the military and worked as a Forman at an aluminum factory during WWII.

    Actually SplatterCat, The Black Chevrons are just showing the CAP on combat power. Cus each soldier has 1 to 3 Chevrons. The More Red Chevrons the better. The Chevrons fill up as they go though Rehab. Cus the Combat Power (indicated by Chevrons) is also directly related to their Draft Value and Moral Value. So if they are worth 3 Drafts, they have 3 combat power.
    The Tiredness of your Surgeons PROBABLY does matter.

      Maybe. But the thing that make it confusing is the choice of color. Usually, red means a negative stat or a penalty (as the rest of the general UI implies).

    • @Bino9898
      @Bino9898 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @ttsymphonyg I'd much more expect black to represent nothing than red. If you see a bar that could be leveled up and its empty, wouldnt you think it's good to have it higher?

    • @ttsymphonyg
      @ttsymphonyg 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Bino9898 As I said, in the other UI elements, red is a negative status, so you don't want any red in your stats. In addition, having a graphical stat with black and "blank" with no explanation or context, is as ambiguous as it can get, because both can represent cap, max, current or empty, and there's no way to know it. On top of that, is in a critical gameplay component.
      Again, is a design decision that can be forgiven with a simple "2/3" tooltip or changing colors, or something easy to do, but now, it is confusing.

    Price is $30, currently 10% off to $27. I like the WWI concept, and that you are dealing with the behind the scenes of the war instead of the usual front line, which might be why you did not get to control any of that, because they are not focusing on it. I am not very good at these type of games, but I always like to try them anyhow, and I will likely check this one out when the price is a bit lower.

    21:09 Amputation is a thing you want for better survival.
    It can give you a better survival odds and be faster then a conventional treatment.
    Better to remove the bodypart with a infected wound, then letting the infection kill the patient.
    Only downside is that it (should) make frontline work impossible, but that just gives you more people for HQ and release.

    • @Varadiio

      I'm not a doctor, it would be nice to get one's professional opinion, but I've been around enough people with gnarly war wounds. I suspect that many if not most of the patients at a stage where amputation is being considered will be away from the front lines for a long time regardless. Whether by infection or tissue trauma, that soldier is likely to need considerable healing time followed by rehabilitation. Someone released from a long hospital stay is no longer physically conditioned for the physicality, not to mention filth and malnutrition, of trench warfare.

    I don't want to say anything incorrect (Any HMs out there who know the details speak up!), but my understanding is that there's big differences between military triage and civilian triage. In a civilian context, the big decision is cutting off care of people who are very unlikely to survive even if extraordinary measures are taken if it means giving care to other people who are likely to survive if they receive immediate care.
    But in combat, you have situations like "This guy's got a piece of shrapnel in his face, but he's not going to bleed to death. If we give him immediate treatment, we can put a gun back in his hands and send him back to the front." That arguably would take priority over a guy who, best case scenario, is gonna be in a wheelchair for the rest of their life. It's morally challenging to say the least.

      Let's not go there, shall we? There were less than 5% female physicians serving during WW1, and most of them were in the home front, not front-line. It's stupidly rare to see more than 1 female nurse in the same war hospital, since all of them were under civil contracts, having been rejected from the army and reserves. It wasn't even until the end of the world that they were enlisted. It is also unusual to see women in the battlefront in general, but you don't talk about the diversity here, do you?
      Then you have the issue where 1/3 of serving personnel in ww1 were black, with 19% serving as combat units. Don't see many blacks, do you?
      Like I said, don't go there. As for the Chinese, they sent about 140k laborers. I'm not saying this game isn't diverse and inaccurate of history, I'm saying there are many diverse things you don't point out, only making headway for your own bias.

    • @Varadiio
      @Varadiio 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@acevaver5425 I'll chime in and say that I don't care how many female nurses there are, other than it makes sense to include them. As long as it's not completely overpowering the historical narrative, I am fine. It would be even better to note that difference from game and reality in some kind of lore notes, loading screens etc. If you think about it, the majority of military units must have been fairly plain and boring looking, with little exceptional qualities, while the few stand-outs are what we want to write fiction about. That doesn't mean "realism" ought to roll the dice on a small chance to get a squad that has interesting dialogue. Include the diversities, and explain why it's included. Leaning too heavily into things like nationality or culture can certainly run the risk of being insensitive caricatures, but throwing random Chinese names on French officers is the silent evil of a lack of effort. I will gladly take insensitive attempts over lazy inclusivity.

    07:19 I know it's mainly fluff text, Burford Whitaker is presumably 37 years old, widower and has 1 child. Since I wasn't able to find the median age of men becoming father during the 1900 to 1910s I take the median of women giving birth to their first child at 21 during the time. The fathers were most often a few years older than the mothers. Puts the child roughly at 14.
    I don't know much about the draft restrictions back in the days of the USA and given the fact the widower state is already known during enlistment, the kid was probably even younger. What would have driven Burford Whitaker to the decision to enlist anway? Leaving the child in whatever care there was, maybe only knew of the kid but never met, massive poverty? etc. And would these thoughts have influence on your (as the player) personal decision, if you are going to operate someone to send them back home or not?
    And yes that's the amount of thought my brain puts into things thrown at it during consumption of any entertainment, being it reading, videogames, film etc.
    Thanks for the fantastic video Splat.

      Adulthood (18 y/o) is a modern invention. I would go as far and say that in 1918, most 14 year olds were more grown up than many 30 year olds nowadays. A friends great grandmother gave birth at age 16 while her husband was enlisted at age 27. Apparently she often mentioned he was the best choice in her life, aka she chose him.
      You can't really compare modern standards with a time over 100 years ago.
      Also unlike today, back then families were bigger and better connected than today, often several generations living together. Today everyone wants to live in "solitude" (at least in the most part of the western world).

    in WW1 and to a lesser extent WW2 morphine was limited so if someone was destined to die you give them nothing and save the resources for people you can help. the reason less morale is lost is when you put someone in the dead pile people expect them to die and when they do it isn't a surprise. people moaning as they die isn't great, but when you understand that they are going to die it isn't as bad. in Vietnam and other wars the troops didn't understand that stuff so they didn't handle expected dead people dying as well, most likely due to the cultural shift and the heavy use of unwilling conscripts that didn't have the right head space for war.

    I was very stoked for this game, but the reviews are turning me off to it. I’m keeping it on the wishlist for now though just to see if it gets better

      Splatt almost always will be streaming the game from the most recent video on Twitch on the day the vid is published. Get on that stream, it's a good time.

    confused by why/how you think 'expectant' means they're about to die, 3rd generation doctor and have only heard that term for someone about to give birth...

      Several years ago I had to take a mass casualty training course because of my job at the time. It mostly dealt with getting people to the secure rooms and evacuation, but they did touch on the casualty and triage part a little bit. Mostly learning terminology and legal ramifications of trying to help the wounded. Expectant was one of the terms we were taught for the dead and those expected to die no matter the level of care they received. We were told expectant patients had no priority for triage care.

    At first I was really interested in this in hopes of finding some nice continuation for those Last Train Home vibes.
    Instead I found rainbows.. and if there are rainbows there is an attempt to twist source material to serve deranged purposes. I dont support twisted movements attempts to siphon validation from crypts of those honourably deceased.
