What a treat . Thank you TH-cam. The dulcet tones of the incomparable Peter Alliss and the great personality of Monty plus the timeless elegance of Ernie. Shall watch this in bite size chunks. Marvellous.
I was at this playoff. You cannot underestimate how hot it was that day. Keep that in mind while watching. Especially with no shade like the golfers were exposed to. With the humidity it was probably the hottest day of my life, because you couldn’t get a break from it. ….My Dad and I were lined up behind the green on the first hole, watching the 3 golfers walk down the first fairway towards us. Monty was probably the favorite going into the playoff. As soon as we saw him in that dark outfit, and his posture, basically already sweating through his clothes on hole 1, we thought he might be in trouble.
Remember the big “water buffaloes” the city/county brought out that week for people to stay hydrated? This was right about the time that bottled water started becoming popular as well. I remember purchasing a bottle of water (something I rolled my eyes at back then. lol) so I could use to refill at the water filling stations. The whole week was a heater 🥵
Monty!! My 1st US Open memory is 97. Monty was also in the mix which will probably be uploaded tomorrow lol. I live in the states and Monty was a perfect villian. He was honestly like a villian in pro wrestling. He would annoy but had the ability to back it up. Until he didn't lol. But, in 2002 he went toe to toe with Tiger in Germany. The Deutsche Bank tourney. And I became a massive fan of his. I'm a heavier guy. I've kind of copied his swing a bit lol. Especially his driving. High hands/reverse C. The 2004/06 Ryder Cup I was actually pulling for him!! 2006 US Open at Winged Foot. I was there. Phil-a-mania was going wild. Monty drills a 40 footer on 17 to tie the lead. Then a double bogey on 18 from the center of the fairway. I was crushed lol. Enjoy all the Opens!! Sorry for the rant!
@craigkennedy865actually four US Opens, he had three seconds and a third (although in the 1992 US Open I'm not sure if he was in contention, he played a great early final round while everyone else went backwards. Also lost in a playoff for the 1995 PGA Championship at Riviera.
56:00 ff ...Peter Allis viciously mocks Monty's bizarre attire. Only comparable incident I can think of is Sergio coming out looking like a Halloween banana at a later Brit Open
this - thru 5 holes - execrable joint performance generates an idea for a whole new kind of golf: foursome "worst ball"....each team play the worst of their 2 tee shots, and so on up the fairway and onto the green, with lowest rediculously high total winning the hole.
No wonder Tiger dominated, these guys played the best of the week and they’re just not very good. I know Oakmont is tough! But missing fairways with irons off tees?
What an amazing broadcast ❤️ so much class in everything, a different world back then 👏

Great personality of Monty?
He doesn’t have one
This open gets no love with the all timers. I'll never forget it

That second hole was just filthy.
For all the accolades Monty has in Europe, man he was terrible in the states. And I've always loved him.

@craigkennedy865 Exactly. If you're in a playoff for the U.S. Open, you're anything but "terrible".
Monty already complaining on the 3rd tee.
Boy, these announcers were doing everything they could to discredit the Big Easy. Homers for Roberts, clearly.
Big Bertha!
This was exactly when the bigger head drivers started to emerge.
I was a big fan of Monty growing up.
Anybody in 2023 get the “He has no chance” reference? 😅
Did ABC interrupt this to carry OJs arraignment
Monty🥲
Ernie's putt on 3 was massive. Some of the ugliest golf you'll ever see from all 3 through the first 3
Monty's white hat clashes badly w his very dark attire; bad, bad sartorial mistake. But his mom always did dress him funny.
18 strokes between them on 2nd hole 342 yds. They should petition for a re-start....

Patrick Cantlay was cloned from Loren Roberts. The two most boring golfers in history.
no to mention Cantlay's "Goldman Sachs" hat.....he loves the squid, and I suppose the squid loves him.
