  • Audio Book - Imperial Earthr by SIR ARTHUR C. CLARKE (1917-2008)
The year is 2276. On the world of Titan, an outer planet of Saturn, Duncan Mackenzie and many other colonists are about to leave their homeland for bicentennial celebrations on Earth. But for Duncan, the journey is also a delicate mission for himself, his family and the future of Titan.
After the incredible back-to-back success of 2001: A Space Odyssey and Rendezvous With Rama, Clarke returned in 1976 with Imperial Earth, a novel less about science than the human spirit. The story revolves around a Titanite making a trip to Earth, and seeing the vast differences between the two places ("For a horrifying second, Duncan thought he was going to have to eat real meat"), but also touches on the elements of the human spirit and mind that will always be with us. Along the way, many predictions about the future are made, and a generally exciting (though not exactly fast-paced) story is told throughout. A rather touching story quite different from most of Clarke's other works, this is a story that will stay with you long after you have read the last page.

Please dont let this soil your enjoyment enjoyment if sci fi and hi adventure. His writing was sometimes sublime and nearly always entertaining. Yes he was a monster and in life we often find that gifted people are often very damaged in very dark and disturbing ways. Also please remember that he was fairly rich and well known and people like this can indulge their desires in secret. In Sri Lanka ge would have been seen as an upstanding good Englishman. People would trust him. Children would trust him. With the right connections he had a whale of a time. Breaks my heart. You have yourself a tremendous day sweetheart. Lift your heart high now.

Just because I’m hearing it here doesn’t make it true. So until further notice I’ll enjoy this genius of science fiction and his incredible knowledge. It was his description of orbiting satellites long before the scientific establishment caught up.

Can't understand other comments saying the narrator speaks too fast. Seems slow and measured to me. Anyway it's the content that matters and this is worth a listen. Not one of Clarke's best but it has some interesting concepts and a quaintly charming mystery to unravel.

2:15:12. Clarke, like many of his contemporaries, slips into writing about writing in most efforts longer than short stories. He’s just given a brief tip on writing in gratitude, and now he demonstrates writing and rewriting for brevity, clarity, and comprehensive inclusivity.
I understand wanting to go to grad school or pedigreed writing conventions for composition instruction, but I am convinced that careful reading and listening reveal what we want professors and mentors to tell us.
I’m also just lazy enough to limit my writing about this to YT comment sections.

So I am not the only one to appreciate Clarke's style. You can tell he is a classically trained speaker of true English. Sentence structure, vocabulary, and masterful use of the simple comma has taught me to improve. I write technical reports and often rewrite with his lessons.

So unfortunate how the narrator's way of speaking this, which is one of my favorite books, eliminates of all emotion. He speaks like they did in the first American movies with sound: in mock English, spoken at a devastating tempo (which "language" was purely developed for "those talkies"). Or as the British radio and cinema announcers sounded of that time, as if everything serious was in reality hilarious, but at the same time as if everything funny was in fact serious.

There's plenty of neat ideas and concepts in this novel, but it just doesn't feel like a story. There's no conflict or antagonist or suspense. Even the reveal about Carl seemed underwhelming because there weren't any clues of buildup to the mystery. Imperial Earth is basically just futurist porn.

Emotions being amplified quite well in the reading but real females perhaps a little impossible but it was eloquent Senor or Senorita. I think there's many imaginations until unity considering the horrors of dystopian politic it helps to listen to this. Well communicate Ishman. Obviously the real fans of his works and conferance is very time consuming much as the orbital large light radio telescope orbiting the minds of impossble TMA in the minnel. this is metaphoric and someday the monolithic maker will probably be celebrated another way, in joy machinery. or well I,m with Mr Falcon that maybe again such delight in it;s interpretation of other science which is dimentional savage but understandably noble is originator that makes fear or the unknown subatomic sciences now adaptable, from enslaved organisms which cyborgs can often be psychologically less receptive. Independant Underwater Monster still vaguelly imagination by man but may as god intended.
