My parents used to have a D reg (1987) 1.1i Ghia 4 spd. In 2004 on the way to school, the entire exhaust system decided to fall off on the Moortown (Leeds) A6120 ring road, back when it was a national speed limit road. That was the straw that broke the camel's back, and we replaced it with a V reg Polo 1.4L.

@@triv7252 to be honest, i give it 4-5 years these days before the back box or the flexi pipe starts to blow. They're still not made to last on many small cars, because they're built to a budget.. With the salt on our roads in the UK, the exhaust takes a battering each year and the front edge of the back box takes all the salt spray and rusts like a bastard, then fails at the join to the centre pipe, but often results in both sections having to be replaced.

More features as standard including a pointless touch screens in every car now maybe but same sort of performance and MPG and not much difference in ride and the styling still looks modernish. The carb was a bit crap as it used to conk out on a long run but would restart after a 5 min rest! Also, it was much better after fitting a points triggered electronic ignition. Overall a very neat and practical design. Defo a classic.

My grandpa owned a fiesta popular 950. The most basic version. It was loud, slow and uncomfortable. But very reliable. Netherttheless we suggested that when he sold it he treated himself to a bit more luxury especially as they often did long trips visiting family. Maybe a fiesta ghia 5 speed or an escort since Ford treated him well. A few years later he announced they had got a new car. And what was it. Something more luxurious? Nope. A fiat panda 750cc! The loudest car ever and a right pig to get started in the winter too. They loved both cars.

a friend of mine had a mk1 fiesta 1.0L. the headgasket went so he rebuilt the head and put it all back together and it ran fine. great little car until tragedy happened. we went visiting his relatives one Sunday evening and about 9:30pm we heard a loud bang outside. an elderly gentleman drove straight into the back of it with his 2.8i Granada. the off side rear was pushed right in with the impact and the car was written off by the insurance. the granada believe it or not got off lightly with a badly damaged bumper. we went everywhere in that little fiesta and it was a rather sad demise. it was a very solid car even underneath.

"19 stage anti-corrosion treatment"....that must have lasted about 19 minutes because they rusted like no tomorrow! Very few made it past 10 years old due to rust.
That never stopped them selling like hot cakes mind, and the XR2/XR2i became a favorite for boy racers on a budget. Bet one of those would be worth good money now if you could find one!

To be fair most lower priced cars today are often scrapped within 10 years due to being uneconomical to repair.
People who bought fiestas new weren't the type to keep them garaged when not in use, they were cars that were used and handed down.
My neighbour has a 75 Triumph stag, only used weekends, just 60k miles, hardly a comparison I know, as it'd have cost at least twice as much as a top of the range fiesta, possibly 3 times , so would have expected it to last
