How could anyone laugh at this? The Maori culture is so proud, courageous, and beautiful. Better to be friend to the Maori than opposed to them. These are such beautiful women, and the culture altogether is overwhelmingly inspiring.

Women and children are the first to suffer in war. Women around the world will stand and fight and they should be able to. Viking women accompanied their men to fight. We have many graves showing this. We have many stories of women who were forced into battle. If there must be war let women be able to protect themselves. Where was it written they must cower and cry? Be strong and fight.

Before the pakeha came to Aotearoa wahine use to fight against other tribes (Iwi) when the Tane was out Hunting or fishing woman were left alone sometimes so they had to fend for themselves using Taiaha , Pouwhenua,
Patu-Mere, Kotiate, Wahaika, maipi Tewhatewha, anything they got there hands on so whoever thinks that wahine ain't suppose to do Mau rakau they don't understand Hine-nui-te-po and Hine-ti-tama she is the all powerful (Wahine - Atua)

SINISTER KILL You might be right but evolution is inevitable. Being Tuhoe I understand 100% that traditions and cultures are important. Tuhoe are probably one of the few that hold true to their tikanga. But even Tuhoe can't evade the momentum of evolution. People change and often their ideas change. What might be traditional to you and your Iwi can be completely different to another. Change and evolution is inevitable. There are many among Tuhoe who will hold fast to their tikanga and kawa. I am one of those people so I understand where you're coming from. The reality is and I am fully aware change will happen. If not in our generation the next. History already tell us this. Once upon a time it was a bad omen to have your photograph taken. Now our Tupuna photographs are adorned on our wharepuni walls. Prior to that they were represented by whakaairo. Practicality changed that. That's called evolution, change of one's ideology and beliefs. So I say hold fast to traditions and cultures for as long as you can but be know that change will occur. Maori have always been about making things fair for everyone. The girls in the video i feel are too influenced by western type thinking where there is this need for "gender equality" and so push for things like this to be done. It's unnecessary, at least in the Maori world.
Maori women have always been warriors, they don't need to do things like this to prove their value as a woman. Maybe as an individual in modern society but certainly not as a Maori.
There were reasons Men played these roles in the past. If those reasons were understood then i don't believe this would be news worth telling.
It's cool though, i haven't seen it before. If she has what it takes to take on that role then of course she deserves to be there. But if it's about female pride? I think Ngati WaeWae need to take another look at that.

heavens above, what's this world coming to. First we have the pakeha come invade our Whenua then steal it for a mea price of a spoon and blanket, then Mike Tyson and Robbie Williams decide they want a tattoo because it looks good (neither understand nor respect the MANA behind the moko) and now we have our very own wahine trying to be a warrior, if I were you Te Amo Taamainu I'd leave the role of warrior to nga taane and stick to the karanga that's our role as nga wahine.

As the brother Tam Anaru said, there is no single person who speaks for the iwi of the North. Not even our King. If it makes sense to the iwi then the iwi will make their own decision of what is right and what is wrong for them. I would rather a woman maintain the integrity of the wero rather than have tribes of men who barely understand what the act means. Times have changed for all of the people of Te Ao and the people must keep up with the times. Much of our knowledge was taken to the night because those who were supposed to take that knowledge did not have the desire and that affects us all. As long as the integrity is maintained and our culture remembers the applications of the past, I believe a respectful path of cultural progress will occur. But we are a people who flowed wherever we went, it is not in our best interests to stagnate unnecessarily. If there are those who are willing to take the torch from our previous generations who still understand and respect the kaupapa of the past, then let them hold that torch high. +SINISTER KILL I disagree. You have to look at it from an iwi perspective. You can't judge an tribes tikanga if you have no knowledge of their tikanga. Each tribe is different. Evolution is inevitable. If you're talking about Tikanga tuturu then nothing is the same as it was back in the 1600's or 1700's,1800's or early 1900's. Things have evolved since then. The rules of tikanga mau rakau and wero are not the same in all iwi? Your iwi have been conducting their specific tikanga and kawa their way for many years I would assume. So no one is going to say it's wrong are they? I'm sure that the tikanga practised on your marae has evolved from the 1600's also. I doubt that everything your iwi practised back in the 1600's or whatever period is not the same now. It's evolved has it not. You can't critize or judge another iwi's tikanga and practises. To do so is to be ignorant. My opinion.
+SINISTER KILL you haven't answered my question. Why can't women within Ngati Waewae conduct wero if it's their tikanga or historical right? If the iwi sanction and fully support it then why not?
