    IMHO, one of your best videos ever. I can hardly stop laughing. - "After watching the video three times, I was none the wiser" - "I'm pretty sure I turned to alcohol after that" Such great one-liner comebacks!!! Pure genius. Thank you for all the creativity you put into your craft. Please know that it is not in vain. We love it, and keep coming back for more!!

    I actually feel some regret about getting this far into this hobby. I used to be content with just two watches: a Seiko solar chronograph that I wore to anything indoors and a Casio Pro Trek that I wore outdoors. The Seiko broke one day and over the last 5 years, I discovered automatics, Swiss watches, GMTs and somehow found justification to spend thousands on watches that are less accurate than a $10 Casio from Walmart. I sold the Pro Trek more than 3 years ago and just bought another one back, but this one has Multi-Band 6. I think it's time to get back to basics and reclaim some sanity with this hobby.

    I sold my Casio DW660 which I bought in 1995 on joining the RAF. Had it as a daily-wear for 10 years and eventually sold it for pennies because it needed a new strap. I wasn't really 'into' watches back then, and didn't realise I could replace the strap, cover, etc...
    I wish I could have that watch back...

    My biggest regret was not getting into quartz (digital) watches sooner! I'd started with old manual wind / automatics, progressed to new ones, but still shunned quartz watches, especially digital ones. Now, the bulk of my collection are quartz watches and my daily wear is a G shock. I now appreciate more the tech behind how quartz watches work, and how they brought wristwatches to the masses.

    • @seabiscuit726142
      @seabiscuit726142 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@seabiscuit726142 As far as time goes, Citizen made a quartz movement, Caliber 0100 that operates at 8,400,000 HZ and is accurate from 1 to 2 seconds per year, without the use of the Atomic clock. That's incredible.

      @janelavie4115 22 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      ”Brought wristwatches to the masses”?
      Not really 😅
      Everyone had a watch on their wrists before quartz era. There was no other alternative in those days.

    • @plektosgaming
      @plektosgaming 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@janelavie4115 The issue was that we were suffering with basically tiny cheap wind up alarm clocks on our wrists. Wind and set it daily. Usually some cheap Timex or similar that wasn't water resistant (not really) and didn't like being banged around very much. But we did know the time. Quartz, beat it up and forget about winding it - it was the reason we all bought one. Set the time once a week and on look - it's got some waterproofness so the rain doesn't ruin it. :)
      What quartz brought was reliability and survivability without the cost of a "real" watch.

    As long as you're undecided about the Explorer, just hold onto it. No need to be hasty. It's practically money in the bank. God forbid the day comes you might NEED to sell it, but if you're not totally in love with it, might come in handy.
    If you firmly decide to keep it, once the little MWC is old enough to notice, you should wear it all the time so that he identifies it with you, and when you hand it down it will really feel like "Dad's watch."

    A top video Russel. The only watches that I re bought that I can remember are the F-91W (I misplaced it, got another one then found on the same day it but I will still keep its sibling). I already had the the G-Shock 5610 non 'U' version with the EL back light that had been with my through various hospital procedures and surgeries over the years but still decided to get the 'U' LED backlight version with arguably improved functional updates. I'm keeping them both one for sentimental reasons and the new one for a brilliant tool watch G-Shock wear. Maybe I should take that offer of therapy up. Thanks for sharing.

    Well the Explorer is the one Rolex, that I want. I mean I really want it. It is to me the most beautiful Rolex one can buy (in my opinion way better than a Daytona or a Sub), it is a toolwatch but you also could wear it at a wedding or everytay in office, for a swim, for vacation or .... whatever. To me it never looks out of place (or what the watch community refers to a GADA watch).
    I did not yet pull the trigger because other stuff I want is also expensive and I am not a rich guy in any shape or form.

That being said I respect the history and that watch should be worn if you are going to keep it. I would sell it. Take the proceeds and carefully choose something more in line with your sensibilities, and somewhat iconic from a brand with history- worthy of being passed down. You can still look at the new watch and trace its lineage directly to your grandfather, remembering him and how much he inspired you.

I would probably normally suggest selling the Explorer given you are not wearing it, but prices are not as strong as they were say two years ago, so a more prudent position might be to hold onto it and sell at the top of the next 'crazy time'. This also gives you the time to do some serious thinking on what you would get in its place.

    Two reasons I’d hold off selling. Firstly, tastes change. You might fall out with it and come back around. If it’s too much bling, get it off the bracelet. Secondly, and maybe this is a me thing, but when I buy another watch, sometimes it makes me appreciate another watch in my collection more. No idea why, but it happens all the time! And if it doesn’t happen in the next few years, well then maybe it is time to sell.

    Russell, I couldn't read all the comments but the predominance said keep the Explorer. I agree. Watches don't go bad. The dilemma, however, is having enough time on wrist. (And time replacing batteries!) Regrets: Brilliant topic for the video!

    Regarding the Explorer I think you answered your own question in the way you reference it. The fact it is a Rolex is incidental, if your Grandfather had an omega you would have got one of them. Its not a “flex” as the youth would say, it’s a memorial/tribute. Definitely a keeper 🥺

    I feel the exact same with with my GS. I have the SBGA465 and it is just so blingy (to me). I took it off the bracer immediately to tone it down with straps and I think it helped, I also think it helped fit a little smaller too. I doubt I’ll sell it anytime soon, I just need to force myself to view it as simply a white watch without lume instead of a blingy dress watch.

    Keep it. If there’s one lesson from your lovely vid, it’s that you can’t rely on any one purchase. But you can rely on the provenance of your inherited Rolex. So don’t swap.

    I have the 214270 mk2 for 6 years now, since then i bought few other watches like omega, grand seiko and Tudor, I don’t wear my Explorer that much now, however every time i put it on I know it’s my exit watch. I always think watches with sentimental value deserve a place in a collection, your wife is wise, listen to her 👍🏻

    I'd suggest keeping the Explorer. You have it now, it does you no harm in keeping it and wearing occasionally if that's all you do.

    Hiya Russ! First time commentor - I found your channel via JOMW and the review of the Origin. Your videos are fun, I enjoy them!
    My regrets have stemmed from buying disconinued Seikos. Buying a used SKX can be a minefield, and a couple of times what looked like a very well presented watch turned out to be a poorly reassembled non original watch out of the Philippines. I've then associated the bad taste of paying too much for a watch not worth the asking price with the watch itself, meaning I don't wear it, and it sits in the box reminding me of it. A hard lesson, but a valuable one.

    I bought a Cartier Santos Medium (35mm) because of Evan (@YoureTerrific). It's been 2 years and it is in my constant wearing rotation between my Explorer I and IWC Mark XX.
    The hilarious thing is that he ultimately sold his and made a video about it, and I was watching that video while watching my own Santos. :D

    Loved this show as always! Nice to hear that even the watch gods have regrets too! I say, if you really can’t stand the new explorer, sell it. Your kids will probably remember you being a mad (Casio) watch collector (see what I did there?? 😉) more than they would you gifting them an expensive watch you didn’t particularly care for. Not to mention I’m sure they’ll get their great grandfathers explorer at some point which is even cooler to me since you loved it, wore it (wear it more if you don’t currently) and cared for it until it was time for them to have it. It’s got more personality than any new Rolex could in my opinion. Whatever you do I’m sure it’ll be appreciated by them and hopefully… the wife 🤣 Cheers!

    Hi there Mr mwc, I'm in exactly the same position with my explorer 214270 , I picked it up in 2019 new from the AD I have worn the crap out of it , just this year I put it on and don't feel a connection with it any more , with the value increased in it my wife is like yours and refuses to let me sell it , so it sits unworn and I feel someone could get more out of it then me , it's my most expensive watch , I also have a omega railmaster and a tudor P01 which I absolutely love any thoughts ?

    I’ve loads of regrets and it’s always the same pattern of declutterring an oversized collection with watches that are not being worn.
    With regards to your Rolex, I traded my polar explorer 11 some years ago and it drove me insane 😂😂. Needless to say, I bought it back but the black one .
    I’m having a purge now.. no seiko is safe.

    With the Explorer dilemma, the answer is obvious. Sell it and get the current 36mm version. Classic/vintage proportions and therefore less blingy.

    • @lonewolfemcquade8133

      The 114270 is cooler imop and wears a little bigger than 36mm, solid end links and the indestructible 3130 movement that can be serviced by any independent watchmaker. Unlike the new movement's that only Rolex can service. Also the new Explorer just looks dainty and wears smaller. The 114270 shares alot of similarities to the 1016 and that's what really makes it great and makes it feel like Rolex of the past that were just awesome sports watches

    My main regret/learnings is to not have more than one genre or type of watch. You'll always end up with a favourite then the others become redundant.
    Or at least thats how it works for me. The whole 'I need a daily wear diver, a smarter diver, a beater diver, a mid range diver, one for actually diving and one for when I'm probably not diving but might do'. Gets a bit much. In the end you wear your favourite.
    So for me now its a single watch only of any type or genre, if I want to buy something new I tell myself I have to sell the existing one before buying its replacement. That pretty much always stops me in my tracks and the few times it hasn't its made me really consider what I'm doing so I don't make a mistake or do it for the instant gratification.

    Great video as usual. I just received my titanium Bel Canto in Cielo. It's gorgeous and I haven't taken it out of the box. All of a sudden I have this weird feeling that I'm wearing a watch that is more expensive than any I've bought before and I drive downtown and see tent cities and homeless people everywhere and now it feels so wrong. So I think it's going on Chrono24. While I love automatics I find myself grabbing my Citizen Promaster Diver titanium that I don't care if I'm wearing while doing a brake job or oil change. I love that watch. I also love my Lorier Neptune and Seiko Capt. Willard. Regrets, I've had a few.
