GORGEOUS. Yes, African violets REALLY hate cold water splashes. I find them very difficult to get them to thrive if you use city water with chlorine. I only use filtered water. If you don't have a filter on your water, it helps to draw the water and leave it in an open container a few days for the chlorine to evaporate. My orchids love that CalMax too. I DO wash the leaves in WARM water occasionally to clean them. The key, I think, is to make sure they dry very quickly and never water in dull light and/or cold conditions. I wonder why so few people grow them these days? I think most people water them wrong and kill them. Gloxinias are even more beautiful IMO. Do you have a favorite online supplier?
Hi Mary and thank you so much for this comment! I forgot to mention I use reverse osmosis water...I mentioned it in the fertilizing portion of the video, but it bears repeating. These plants do not like chlorinated water. So it's really important to draw it out of the tap beforehand as you mentioned if you don't use RO water. It's interesting how you clean them with water...again very carefully is the key. My brushing technique works really well for me. I think that a well grown AV is truly a thing of beauty, and I love Gloxinias as well. The supplier for the AVs in this video sells on Ebay, and her ID is gmcloretta. I contacted her recently, and she will be selling again at the end of March 2021. She doesn't sell them while it's cold here in our area. Happy growing and many blessings! Amy
Your video was so precious. The love for your grandmother 👵🏻 so sweet. I agree with you about growing plants 🪴 it’s very therapeutic. May God richly bless you .🙏🏻🤗🥀
Thank you for sharing those beautiful memories. I rescued a couple African violets earlier this year from the Clearance rack and they've been making quite the comeback.
You are so sweet! You are keeping your grandma’s hobby alive, that in itself is a big thing in today’s world! God bless you!!! Very informative video!!
Oh my, how nostalgic! My grandma also grew these too when I was a child on her lacy tablecloth dining room table in that big old farmhouse. I can still see that beautiful sight in my mind to this day. So many she had so many, many years ago. I loved them so much! They were my first plant as well. I have 7 right now and 9 in propogation ready to be separated from their mama leaves. You've given me the motivation to get this done. I so love your videos! Blessings from Arizona 🎋
It's amazing that you have the same memory of your grandmother! The table my grandma had was covered with a beautiful crochet piece she made herself. Wow, I can still see that in my mind's eye. Funny how we remember beautiful things from our childhood...thanks for going down memory lane with me! Blessings from TN! :)
Your AVs are beautiful. I have Frozen in Time and it is a fabulous plant. Mine stays in constant bloom. I have a large collection and after many years of growing I finally settled on using Pro-mix BX. Thank you for sharing these beauties. Blessings.💚 Susan in northern GA.
Hi and thanks so much for your comment! Frozen in Time is incredible...she just keeps blooming! :) I appreciate you sharing your tip about the Pro-mix BX...it's always good to have recommendations from experienced growers like yourself. Blessings!
LOVELY! Violets are a stunning plant. I have always had them in my home. Great tips! My grandmothers were special women in my life also. Thank you for your video!
Hi Lana! Thanks for sharing! There's a few different ways to water them...mine are getting so full I might have to start watering them from the bottom of the planter too. How long do you leave the water in the dish before you drain it? Never done it this way before. Blessings to you! :)
Hi Darling! Yes, I put little bit of water on the bottom and see if the plant absorbed it fast. If the water stay on the bottom, that means its enough. And I pick up the plant to see if its heavy or light. Thats how I know it needs water. 😊🌺
Thanks for your tips Amy. I had an African Violet some years ago which I took to my office and thrived as I them by my window that did not get direct sun at all but a bright window light.I took the pot home presumably because I wanted to enjoy it at home, and I don’t k is what I did wrong but it died. I’m going to buy another root this summer and now I know better. Thank you for tips, and also your story. God bless you, Amy.
Beautiful and heart warming video . I just recieved two small A violets as gifts so your info is very timely ! Thanks for the blessing and hope same for you 🙏
Good morning Amy. I love your story about your african violets, the cutting board, and the bird. Thank you for sharing that. 😊 I have two AV and I grow them in AV pots. I keep water in the base and check the level weekly. When I fertilize I pour it on the top of the soil. I use bottled spring water for all of my house plants. My orchids get distilled water with your added fertilizers. I've been wondering what to do with my AV that has a 3"! neck?! I'm thinking she needs to go into a regular pot. I also use AV soil and fertilizer. Now I'll be adding CalMag. 😉 I never do anything to the leaves. I love the brush idea. 👍 You do such a wonderful job caring for all of your plants. I hope you have a blessed day. 🙋♀️ Tammy in N AL.
Hi Tammy! The supplier told me to make sure to keep their necks covered...just add soil around it. I had to do this with the purple frilled one a few months ago. The few drops of CalMag is a really good thing! Makes the blooms even more colorful. So glad you enjoyed the video, and I always look forward to hearing from you! :) Many blessings to you and your family today!
When you first came back to TH-cam, recently, I wanted to ask if you grow african violets. I do too. It seems a lot of orchid lovers also grow af. violets. Thank you for displaying yours. They are beautiful. It's always sweet to have plants with sentimental value behind them.
Hi Margo! I think AVs look really beautiful with orchids...they're providing me with blooms while my orchids are spiking. So that's a beautiful thing! Thanks so much for your comment...I'm looking forward to publishing more AV videos! :) Bless you!
Just discovered and subscribed to your channel. Do you use clay pots or just plastic? Love how you pray the blessing at the end. I really needed that today!
Hi again, I had asked about what soil you use on the AV but I also wanted to ask why you might think I'm getting horizontal breaks in my leaves. I'm a beginner with AV andvI noticed the stress will bend easily .
I have a beautiful African violet that is a prolific bloomer. I was just looking up if I could water it with orchid food when I saw your video. I have done just about everything wrong with it (I use cold water and I have it in a window that gets more sun than it should and I’ve never feed it)but my guy is happy so if it ain’t broken don’t fix it, right? I forgot to mention the plant is 2 years old. I was wondering about repotting because it seems so smooched but I guess I’ll wait a bit. I just fed it for the first time so I’ll see what it does and then maybe mess with repotting it later. You said they like to be root bound so I guess it won’t hurt anything. Is there a best time to repot?
My biggest issue which seems to result in death of AV’s is POWDERY MILDEW. I have researched and tried a few suggested methods to manage it. If anyone has found a way to deal with it please share. And it’s not about air circulation I actually have my $500 Dyson tower air cleaning fan pointed on mine that is scheduled to be on more than it’s off.
Orchid Whisperer thank you for replying, on the plants leaves and seems to stunt their growth, I’ve tried many different remedies. I’ve read that a temp drop can cause it etc.. I’m at the point of believing I just have too many mold or mildew spores in my house and my home environment is just not the best of home environments for them.
So even through the winter you fertilize these beauties?? I’ve got two violets that I got in the summer and I’ve only seen one of them bloom. I’m wondering if I’m not fertilizing enough!

I use rainwater to water my african violets. They are healthy, beautiful and happy 😊

I have used Violet Barn since the '90s.

Wow gorgeous! I have one African violet and one Asian violet. I love the variegated leaves.

Love your videos! My Christmas cactus is huge thanks to your help. What soil do you use?
The care is amazingly similar to orchids.

Gorgeous av's. Why do bottom leaves turn down?
