IJN Azuma [WiP] - Great Guns, Trash Armor

- The Azuma has been moved from T10 to T9 and gone through some changes. The 30mm armor plating is gone, as is a large chunk of health. Instead the dispersion has been improved significantly. You can find my recommended build at the end as usual.
As I mentioned in the vid, I recently hit 60k followers on Twitch and to celebrate that I'll be giving away a bunch of WoWs related stuff, such as multiple premium ships and CC containers (which can also contain ships), in 2 days, on Friday. I don't see why you assess the weakness of the armor by looking at the damage from inaccurate ships. They can be inaccurate but when they land a shell on your ship, they have the same penetration value and they make the same damage. Massachusetts shells have about the same penetration and damage as the NC when they land on the target.

The armor is weak and the size is huge. Even poor accuracy ships manage to hit many shells on an angled azuma and cause insane dmg
I like the fact that flamu is always explaining things so clearly and makes an average potato like me so easy to follow it. Considering you're giving out a great deal of information and analysis through out the video, I wonder if you're doing it off script. Either way I think you got some quality presentation skills right there and you're amazing.

When a Massachusetts is capable of consitently citadel you, you know the ship has survivability issues
Never underestimate Masachusettes main gun. It is same as NCs but only the gunners are drunk.

At least Zao Citadel is so well designed that even though ships will overmatch you all day, 90% of them will always be over penetrations!
They made a ship as visible as a Donskoi, big as a Kronstadt but as fragile as a Neptune. Slow clap WG.

Old Azuma felt better. Why would I want great guns when every bb can punish for simply existing.
I guess for balance purposes. Imagine, You have great guns and great armor. You become a very very hard target to kill. WG probably wants you to be more skillful when playing this ship. Extremely powerful Premium ships must have downsides.

Because it was a fair ship. They can't allow IJN to have a ship that is decent to its place at the very least.
@@Sanctuary-si1qt Someone with some sense. If WG would had given it awesome armor AND awesome accuracy, almost everyone would be whining how OP it is. There is no middle ground with most people on social media.
@@CloneDAnon No. The problem with this ship is the design. This ship is anti middle ground. You give it an excellent feature whereas the others suck. Badly so, if I might add. It's just another one trick pony and nothing more. Sure it has great guns, but that's about it. This is in no way balanced design. Some people might like glass cannons, but I believe that the majority doesn't. Also, nowhere in my previous comments have I said that this ship should have specifically had amazing armour as well. I said the old azuma felt better, with the worse guns but better survivability. I'd rather live long enough so that my average guns can deal damage, than get 30k-ed from a massachusetts.

What i have problem with this ship was how thry handled this change. They ignored everyone saying this was a brutal nerf for a fragile ship, and even go to the point of saying "it was a improvement for better gameplay role".
I only hope Yoshino is at least the old Azuma
Sometimes i wished you had a bit more historical backround in the ships you talk about. For example the Musashi is not only a sister ship of the Yamato (both build and sunk in WW2) but also the Musashi was finished in the setup the Yamato has in game and the Yamato was finished the way the Musashi is in game and the got upgraded to her "second" state.
Azuma just became a really, really large Mogami/Ibuki :p Also, didn't the Ibuki have the same 25mm all-around as Mogami? Have to check when I'm back at home.
Before she was kinda like Zao but without torps, now she's kinda like Ibuki but without torps.
Ibuki has some 30mm deck parts
So Azuma is a large Ibuki.
Alaska is a large Baltimore.
it seems to be a yamato class Zao...armor seems like thin yamato armor, about half the normal one.

Shit armor is ok in my book, there's enough HE meta already, if i can get some damage back in a BB (that is supposed to counter cruiseres), i won't complain at all. but give it hydro to deal with DDs, especially when it steers like a brick.

This is like an oversized molotov (massive size, terrible handling, huge turning circle, non existing armor, spotting planes, extremely good guns). So anyone that love the molotov might love this one, exactly the same play style.
No point buying this anymore, might as well got for the alaska.
No the alaska is pretty similar too. They raised the citadel for it so you will get rekt pretty badly in that. Probably better armor though so angling should work a lot better.

still...Azuma armor seems like a thin Yamato layout...bad
@@MikoMuru Better AA, would have radar or Hydro and Def AA since its US ship so imo its going to be better even if you lose out in dispersion.
WG will probably nerf the Alaska again too. They have been making some terrible decisions lately.

Hang on a minute, I thought that WG recently said that they wanted to reward angling on high tier cruisers? I call it bullshit. Unless they are refeering to cruiser vs cruiser fight only.
Looking forward to the Yoshino and this, but I really question how the Azuma and Yoshino can compete with their Russian counterparts.
Lol Azuma has awesome guns compared to Kronstad and Kronstad has 25mm armor everywhere and a giant citadel. Not even speaking about Donskoi (these are only Soviet ships that it can be compared to now).
The Kron does have that ridiculously well armoured belt though which can ricochet even yamato shots if angled well enough, how does the Azuma compare in that regard?

kron baits citadel shots at the front citadel...but its side armor is much longer so the weak part is far in the front
@@luketfer Kronstad has its historical 230mm belt armor value. Azuma has 25mm outer armor then 178mm citadel armor belt behind it, with IJN style turtleback from what i have seen. Kronstad has two massive weakpoints in its armor below its front and rear turrets Kronstad citadel is not that big in the middle but it has two huge bulges in the front and the rear which are extremely easy to penetrate even for light cruisers.
@@cobrazax Both front and rear of Kronstad are extremely weak. Azuma will be awesome with the long range mod. That accuracy is something Kronstad can only dream of.

I was excited about Azuma being free until I saw just how this ship is almost exclusively made out of citadel....As squishy as worcester and much bigger oh god
If it looks that squishy maybe giving it improved citadel heal potential would be a nice buff,from 30% to 40%, make you tank a bit with raw hp and not relying on armor
Every BB who is shooting Azuma will feel like they are yamato and they are shooting cruisers..

@@theverybigshow iven if you don't have a spotter plane, it's not hard to citadel one while in smoke just from looking where the shots come from.
If you have a spotter... well, I'll just say that I've dev-striked one that had never even yet been spotted, and thought they were safe in smoke behind an island...

Except Stalingrad actually existed and Kronstad was in progress of being built, unlike Azuma that never got beyond the paper design.

@@datgood121 I think they finished the hull or at least most of it, since it was launched on water, but they did not install the weapons and stuff like that on it. Yes it was used as target practice for missiles test if i remember correctly.

Just a side-note here, is there anyone who is gonna get this pile of gun 25mm platform instead of the Alaska if they are both released 1mil free exp. By all means i'm interested to hear arguments from either side. I'll be waiting.

I manage to do really well with this ship, it might not be for everyone but it's definitely the right ship for me :)
Sometimes when I accidentally citadel an enemy and surprisingly I get a citadel ribbon pop up in my screen I get scared. I get scared thinking what my shell just lewd.
So yeah I agree Azuma is really scary to have in enemy team. **Laughs in izumo**

I bet you 50 bucks that WG will nerf the Alaska either before it is released or shortly after. I will wait and see what happens before wasting 1 million fxp or I could join the dark side and get the T10 Russian BB Kreml when it comes out.

I pumped 3 salvos of Baltimore AP into a broadside Azuma at ~8KM being played by a tester without citadeling him a couple of days ago. The Armor seems fine.
That survivability at first glance would seem to be a bit of a deal breaker. If just about any sort of BB can trash you with a lucky salvo from just about any angle seems pretty bad, especially when one considers things like Stalingrad/Kron/Alaska as you pointed out.
Not sure the game needs another ship more or less forced to sit at max range plinking away.
Seems an ultimate glass cannon. I should think a smart team (yeah, I know, what are the odds?) would focus it given the opportunity.

So the Azuma Is an Emerald with Actual guns? Like a Hairbrain design from a British Armor Designer and a Japanese Texan? Let´s use paper for speed, and a HUUGE Rifle for damage.
The ship is huge, clumsy and has weak armor. I definitely won't spend any resource on it. If Yoshino is similar, I'll skip it too. They'll have to improve the armor at least in order to make the ship attractive and not just stand as a huge floating citadel attracting long range BB shells.
Have you tried sailing full broadside against BBs? I'm thinking that since the armour is so bad, the shells might pass through without fusing. IDK if that will work or if WOWS mechanics are that detailed though.
They really need to buff all the armor make things slightly more tanky besides direct shots.
My only wish, is that i should have bought azuma years ago. Azuma is very good.
I do feel these battle cruisers are better compared to the battleships and cruisers of their tier instead of just to the cruisers as battle cruisers in game behave a lot more like fast lightly armored and armed battleships than they do like cruisers of their tier. But their weapons and armor are too weak to classify them as battleships so they end up being called cruisers even though they act more like battleships.
atleast give it a hydro and a little bit better turret turn plz :D

at least nagato's guns can overmatch all ships at tier 7
And it has the highest health pool at tier 7, so it is at least tanky in that regard

So basically this ship is a cross between a zao, and a ibuki. Also because it is a new super cruiser i expect it to be focused heavily
Ok Flamu i ask you this, Why would i want to play the Azuma when i can play the Mogami with it's 15x155MM guns and a 9.5KM detection range and torps, I mean both of them can get cit anyway i just don't get this ship...
For 750k or 1 million free exp, I will just free exp my way to the Zao or Ibuki instead. The fact that can get the Zao instead of this makes me wonder "Why play this ship at all?"

So it's a Stalingrad 0.5 since it has the same cruiser accuracy but lack the armor, penetration and utility the Stalingrad has.

I love the idea of a ship that everything about it besides concealment and guns is awful. But the Guns are godlike and are better than Yamato with American Piercing Ammo.
Well another long range HE spam ship. Kinda glad to have those 310s, but that armor...
EDIT: Also, wouldn't be an interesting alternative to go for double rudder on this ship? Since you already lack radar and concealment itself isn't that fantastic in the first place.

Alaska isn't laughing. Alaska is cowering in the shadow of the shadow of thw nerf hammer because of all the flagelent lies applied to her that got Azuma nerfed.
Everyone forgets Stalingrad and Moskva were subsequently buffed with not only 50mm plating but a 50mm fore belt.
None of those ships, Alaska, Kronshtadt or Azuma have those 50mm plates that make them tanky.
But haters talk like those ships continue to do ams they end up getting nerfed.
@@mtumeumrani376 Alaska not only can bow tank 380mm, it even has more HP, radar, US AP and underwater citadel that's impossible to get to at brawling ranges sooo sum all that up and conclude who is the close-mid range specialist, yes the Azuma is better at kiting away and providing support from long range but tbh that is quite a horrible gameplay that not many players prefer. If it had a better ballistic than I'd definetely change my mind but with the current one it's a pain for me to get used to it. . . . aaand what flagelent lies are you talking about, being made up of paper in a such huge ship and with the HP nerfed I doubt it's any fun to play with. Now you might say: "The Kronshtadt is also big and has 25mm everywhere and a large citadel". Well, the Kronshtadt at least has something to compensate: FAR MORE HP, 230mm belt, and it's citedel is just above the waterline and not as gigantic and elevated like the Azuma citadel, you can also use that belt to bait people into shooting it AND firing all the 3 turrets because of those amazing gun angles, so YOU ACTUALLY CAN TANK in the Kronshtadt + the amazing ballistic. If the Azuma will be released as it is in the current state, I doubt I'll buy it even by having 2mil. FXP.

Whelp I was going to grab this ship but I remember how frustrating playing the Missouri was before they lowered the citadel and if that ship frustrated me, then this won't be the ship for me.
Right... So the only one Cruiser without radar W.G releases will go down in flame faster than a Dunkerque. W.G really have turned into a commercial-first operation, this game certainly doesn't need more radars (who said that once upon a time?), but ships to counter them, support DDs and unlock caps. We're not gonna be able to do that if this ship can't operate in open waters.
I WAS thinking that this might be my first Tier 9 Premium.... Now, I will have to pass unless it gets some changes...

reminds me of Kron... It is more tanky overall, but that 25mm bow.. Was surprised when i learnt that i could overmatch the bow of it... but not Buffalo :/
So we get a BB sized cruiser who is easy to citadel and with this weak against BB and DD doesn't sound very promising for me.
