The Executive Table with Mary Wamae - From Executive To Entrepreneur
The interview was an engaging and reflective discussion on my journey from corporate leadership to entrepreneurship, where I shared personal lessons, challenges, and triumphs that have shaped my professional path. The conversation began with a reflection on the importance of dreaming big and stepping out of comfort zones. We delved into my time as General Manager at GSK, a role that not only sharpened my leadership skills but also taught me the value of ethical decision-making.
The story of acquiring Tropical Brands-formerly known as Oasis-took center stage. I described how a chance encounter during my corporate tenure led to an enduring relationship with the business’s founder. This connection became instrumental when I decided to transition out of a structured corporate environment to create something of my own. The acquisition process was a mix of boldness, strategic negotiation, and reliance on values that I hold dear: integrity and respect for others.
A key part of our conversation was about letting go of control to enable growth. I emphasized the importance of building a strong team and allowing professionals to lead in their areas of expertise. It’s a lesson I’ve carried throughout my career: a business that depends entirely on one person cannot outgrow them. Whether it’s starting from scratch or acquiring an existing venture, entrepreneurship demands courage, adaptability, and a clear sense of purpose.
The interviewer and I also touched on youth unemployment and the critical need to shift mindsets. I encouraged young people to think beyond traditional jobs, to view challenges as opportunities, and to approach entrepreneurship with resilience.
Ultimately, the interview was more than a discussion about business; it was a celebration of collaboration, the power of interdependence, and the belief that the best leaders focus on building sustainable legacies.
