Appas episode won an award for raising awareness of animal abuse, also Mako is the voice actor of Iroh, he sadly passed away during filming due to cancer and the drawing of irohs son is actually a young Mako! Leaves on the vine was one of his last voice recordings and the new Iroh va refused to ever sing it :( rest in peace mako ❤️
Also to add, the new voice actor for Iroh is featured in the episode when he goes into the alleyway to confront the kids who are earthbending with a ball after they kick it through a window.
Where is the source that drawing of Lu Ten is supposed to be young Mako? I Can never find a source for that and i always see people say it with such confidence?
@@tempsitch5632 Good for them. But this was my comment. And it’s true in the sense that the scene where Iroh honors his late son takes one by surprise. It brilliantly switches the mood to a very somber tone. I’m sure a lot of people don’t see it coming. Thus the appropriateness comment…original or not.
When this show was on air, the Desert and Library were the mid season finale of Book 2, so there was a few month break until the next episodes came out and then there were a few mini hiatuses in between the episodes. We lost Appa in July and then they gave us Appa's Lost Days in October which was such a gut punch after so long. 4 months felt like an eternity to a 10 year old, but makes me glad I was born before the era of streaming and binge watching. The long wait made the resolution so much more rewarding😊
Fun fact: the little girl who recognises her cat was voiced by a Make-A-Wish child. She just wanted to see how the show was made, but the creators made a character for her to voice.
I‘m not sure if someone else told you already but the little girl at the end of the tale of aang was a make a wish kid. She had cancer and wished to visit the avatar studios. The creators surprised her at the studios and offered her to voice a sentence in the series. The character even looks like the girl. Gladly she survived the cancer as far as I know :)
The tale of Iroh is super sad for many reasons, but just the simple fact he spends his son birthday helping anyone he sees and laments that he couldn't help his son is enough to make me cry every single time that he starts singing.
Appa's lost days is such a great episode. Barely any spoken words yet it conveys Appa's feelings so perfectly. ATLA just has some of the best storytelling of any show.
28:32 this run of episodes, even until the last of the season, are so close to being a movie with how good the storytelling is, they hit an insane stride in the writers room
At the airing of this episode watching the tale of Iroh, is when I learned the death of Mako, the original voice actor for Iroh. So that story hits that much harder each time that I watch it. He died during the post production of season 2. Most of the season is Mako doing Iroh. I think one or two moments this season, his replacement did the voice acting. He was 72. Thanks to the people who picked him for Iroh.
The thing with Iroh's story? Who did he help? He helped 4 boys or men, at different points in their lives.. Because he felt like he couldn't help his own son :( And yeah, last episode before his actor died if i remember. But he finished all of Season 2 pretty much
A yhing about the.little girl at the end kf anags tales with the cat, shes based of a girl who was a fan of the show and she had an illness, cant remember what but i think she also did the voice.
The show makes it really easy to hate the fire nation but this episode shows that there are good people even in the worst places that punish sympathy and reward cruelty
I finally got around to watching this - both of those episodes are perfect, but so sad. I used to call my elder cat “Appa” when he would wake up grompy and it’s the first anniversary of his passage to the great cat tree in the sky (yesterday). Both of those episodes wrecked me when they came out, but I was so happy with Appa’s outcome. Poor baby.
If you guys remember earlier in the show, there is an episode where Aang goes to the spirit world and while he’s in the spirit realm he passes by Iroh and Iroh sees him even though he’s in the living world. Well Iroh was able to see Aang because after his son was killed Iroh went to the spirit realm to try and bring his sons soul back and bring him back to life. So he always has a connection to the spirit world
Tales of Ba Sing Se breaks me everytime, even watching reactions to it. This episode is one of the best of the entire series. Haven't even watched yall react to Appa's Lost Days yet, too busy crying over Iroh. Appreciate your reactions
I honestly forgot Appa's Lost Days happened so soon into Book 2, it's favorite episode, mostly because I love Appa and am a big fan of his voice actor.
I’ve been waiting for these episodes cause i knew they were gonna be important to y’all! Thank you guys for watching avatar and making these reactions I love watching them!!
Bcuz I’m late to these reactions. Idk if anyone pointed this out already. But if you look at zuko whenever he falls asleep. He only sleeps with his burnt eye up when he’s around people he loves, cares, and trust!
My favorite aspect of Zuko's story is two fold, both of which are from previous comments I have read but have stuck with me. Regarding Zuko's ridiculous hair at the very beginning, Iroh likely made him look ridiculous on purpose, knowing that any woman worth her salt would instantly mess with it, giving Zuko the first playful touch from someone outside of the fire nation that he has ever experienced. Iroh's entire style is built around knowing his opponent's move and preparing for it. The other factor is my disagreement with people thinking he was stupid to light all of the candles at the fountain, from his perspective, yes it was extremely foolish to do, but given the nature of the city, someone would see him and then hide their knowledge because who wants to mess with the dai lee, or they wouldn't know there was a war in which case anyone watching would basically be like "Oh, hey cool, a fire bender" and not report it because they would not know the significance of that trait.
I find it so precious that aang and appa have the same dream. Like even though theyre physically apart, theyre still together. This show is just perfection.
I watched this show when I was in 7th grade. I am 31 now. I’ve rewatched this whole show maybe 15 times and I cannot watch Appas lost days because it pulls so much on my heart strings and the animal abuse makes me cry. I have to fast forward past it or skip it all together.
Following up Tales of Ba Sing Se and the more upsetting parts of that, with the reveal of what Appa’s been through all this time right afterwards, personally hurts my feelings lmao

The cabbage merchant's brother, the onion slinger
@robthebuilder6663 you made my day with that
That's weird. My roof starts to leak whenever I hear "leave from the vine"
I love when reviewers have these two episodes together.
One two punch of unexpected crushing emotion from this show

I keep crying throughout Appa's episode no matter how many times I watch it. The storytelling in this series is phenomenal. 🥺
Is so upsetting he was so traumatised 😢
Iroh's Tale ending dedication to Mako is to the iconic Mako Iwamatsu, aka the voice actor of Iroh who passed away in 2006.

Comfort the child, guide the adolescent, support the young adult. We just saw Iroh parenting.
