Have you heard of star sapphires?? These sapphires exhibit the asterism effect due to specific orientation of needle inclusions in the gemstone. Star sapphires are true phenomena of nature. A piece of sapphire rough can be cut and polished into a star sapphire only when it has the right amount of tiny needle-like inclusions called rutile oriented at very specific angles along the crystal growth planes.

1. 9.60ct Sri Lanka star sapphire, looks like it has zebra stripes
2. 11.80ct Burma Star sapphire
3. 3.50ct Burma purple star sapphire
4. 5.02ct Sri Lanka purple star sapphire

I have two Cauliflower blue star Sapphire’s. They came from Sri Lanka. The two I have where my Mother’s. She brought them in Annapolis, MD. And had them set in white gold. She left them to me. She had them around 25 to 30 years ago.

How would you know a lab grown sapphire from natural?

The lab grown synthetic sapphire is grown in the lab in a short time. The natural sapphire is form under the ground that took millions of years. Due to the different kind of formation, the internal characteristics are different. We would then use the microscope to look out of these different characteristics.
