  • Thunderstorms, often severe, are very common in the Midwest, but they are rather unusual in the Winter. A strong disturbance ahead of a warm front triggered some impressive elevated convection during a strong January warm-up. Temperatures did reach to near 60 degrees in northern Illinois. This storm was not severe, but did trigger a Flood warning for northern Cook county due to heavy rain falling on frozen top soil. Temperatures a few nights prior were below zero farenheit! Even more impressive: This was at 2 AM. No surface instability was present, but there were MUCAPE levels of around 300 j/kg, and lapse rates were above 8 c/km.

We had two tornadoes, the first ever recorded in December, here in MN from the 12/15/2021 mega storm. I shot video of the thunderstorm here in Minneapolis - happening just days before Christmas. No other storm like it in ages.
