In this ZBrush tutorial we will be looking at how to use Backface Masking. This will allow you to sculpt on one side of your geometry without affecting the other side by auto masking your brush. This works great on thin pieces of geo, in tight areas, and I use it all the time in my professional work.

Came, took the knowledge and left and in less than 30s. It gave me plenty of time to leave a like, too!

Good tip, well done. Thank you.
I was looking for a way to remove the eye balls and mouth sections from a head
that I wanted to UV - I can Extract a painted mask of the front of the face but alas,
it brings new eye balls and mouth with it. I will keep trying.

Thank you for the tip, that happened to me once when I modeled thin cat ears. I sculpted inside outside and the problem continued.. 🤯 I thought I was crazy sculpting that ear for almost half hour 😆
then I saw one of your live videos and voilá!

I use this technique to mask area in thin face, but only works with dot stroke, I want to do that with rect stroke, anyway to do that?

I JUST found out about BFM and immediately customized my UI to include it in a quick to click spot.
I'll never get back those hours of tedious masking but at least I'll never have to do them again.

this is really great. I was modeling clothes and and before I saw your tutorial I was just deleting the inside after making an extraction. Figured I would just use double face texture in Unreal engine.
Question: when using ctrl mask how do I make it so it only blackens one side and not both so I can make separate polygroups for inside the clothes and outside?

You have to turn on back face masking for your mask pen. Hold ctrl and then click the button.

Hi, do you know if it's possible to change color of the BACKFACE material?
Sometimes I have a problem to see if there are any clipping mesh.
In any 3D software, you can set blackface color, and easily see the clipping, but I can't find this option in ZBrush.
    Thank you.

why is this not on by default?

It effectively renders double the number of polygons, so it requires more resources.
