      having expensive gear and taking all my photos with my phone because it's too heavy to bother bringing the camera and the phone has a decent lens that I don't need to worry about learning as much x) I feel like I can never get both the bokeh I want with correct lighting on my lens it's frustrating so I shoot either in aperture auto or shutter auto most of the time. As soon as I need to have fast shutter speed I can never get enough light it seems.

      Not taking multiple, similar compositions of a shot (specifically various dimensions), because I'll just "crop it in post".

      Im the photographer for an NHL team and I shoot RAW on one card JPG on the other. The one time this year was needed was team photo day. Thats it. All my other photos were jpg. Delivered in jpg. Uploaded to Getty images...... originally as a jpg.

    Very interesting video. The photographers not moving over to motion work is a strange one for me personally. I work exclusively in motion, but used to be a photographer who would shoot video. When I split myself and tried to say I could do everything, my work suffered and I appeared less professional. I was stuck forcing myself into one-man-band scenarios.
    The best photographers I know in the industry are on set with me during commercial shoots NOT as a DP or an OP, but as a photographer.
    I know it seems like the world is changing and you can make so much more money by adding video packages to your work, but our jobs are very different and (should) require different gear and experience. To not only combine them, but to combine them using one person is detrimental to the industry as a whole by further perpetuating client expectations of getting work for cheap and abusive client/creative relationships.

      Thank you for saying this. I was scrolling through these comments to see if anyone felt the same as me and you've echoed my exact thoughts. I used to be a cinematographer and am now strictly stills. I know how to do both, fear and/or lack of skillset are not the issue-- it's an intentional choice I'm making and my work is infinitely better for not splitting my focus. Tired of the idea that still photography no longer holds value and if you don't shoot motion then you're not professional enough. As you said, it's a different skillset and it's within no one's best interest for a shooter to fill both roles.

    Number one reason why I NEVER switch to JPG... is that the couple time I did for something specific (years ago), I forgot to turn back to RAW for a moment and "lost" important photos. so please never switch to JPG... RAW+JPG if anything. By the way personally when I need super fast turnover, I import the RAW, slap a preset, make basic adjustment and reduce contrast and increase recovery of highlife and shadows (so it's not as susceptible to over/under exposure), and export. Takes about an hour MAX on a slow computer. Now there's times where you don't even have time for the and I just shoot RAW+JPG and send the JPG. but usually you do have at least an hour to send files. Other solution is to have an editor on site, that's what Getty does, that's what I do for fashion week :)

    Great video as always man - your content has been crushing it! I'm gonna disagree with not always shooting RAW. I would say shoot RAW + JPEG so you can deliver quickly if needed but still have the RAW in case you need them.

    4:06 You are so bang on with the pro photographer creating an original photo. I got into some events with multiple photographers and they were all shooting from the same area, same angles, and I'm like climbing up and down stairs, going sideways, getting back stage (with permission ofc) to get completely original compositions. Don't imitate, innovate!

    100% agree about RAW. I’m guilty of this myself, but more to do with shooting raw because I can usually mess up the exposure and fix it later. But then later I hate myself for being lazy.

    I struggled with the thought of going four years on my second hand 7d mki I bought for $175, I wanted full-frame, a nice lens.....I wasn't making money at the time from photography and bought an $85 used 50mm 1.8, this lens changed my life and taught me how to be a skilled photographer and work with what you have!! After four years with the 7d I just upgraded to my first full frame, the EOS R and upgraded my lens and it feels so good.
    I feel accomplished now that I am making money with my photos, and upgraded my gear when I had the skill to back it up. Such an important message you shared

  • @peter_shadow7559
    @peter_shadow7559 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    There is a certain truth to the point of making videos, but life is not based on Instagram, Tiktok or TH-cam. What you see on restaurant menus and in cookbooks are photos, what you see on billboards are photos, what you see in fashion catalogs are photos, modeling agencies still ask for portfolio photos (no director watches videos, it takes time ). Magazines (digital or physical) despite being an old medium cover basically all topics and still have a great weight in advertising, on each page there are photos. Photography remains the fastest tool to communicate the message. Other than that I like your style and enthusiasm in presenting and you are absolutely right on the other points.

    7:06 Ive always found this one difficult. I am always for someone wanting there own shot but every single person I have done work for says the same thing. "well, your the photographer, tell me what to do". It takes some time to push them to come up with what they have in mind. My ideas are last resort to get you something. Your ideas come first.

    • @MentalitaHrvatska
      @MentalitaHrvatska 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree, at first I was lazy and always let the customer decide, what led to some awkward shootings afterall, but after I took control about this, I often felt like I was doing most part of the work. I really don't like it, when the customer has absolutely no idea what to do. My wife once wanted this "holding colorful autumn leafs in front of my face" picture and just stood there holding it like 10cm infront of her face and I really got angry at her and asked if she ever saw this type of photo with someone holding the fucking leafs right into their face. Customer do stuff like that all the time and I patiently guide them, but often I am really exploding inside. Parents who realize their kids are just looking at them, but they never get the idea to move behind me or else where the kid should look at for the shot.. Many are lacking common sense and also they are pissed off when you tell them how to pose instead, even they just stood there with hanging sholders, curved back, fatty hair and so on.. c'mon, at least get ready on a hygenic base..

    • @craigman7262
      @craigman7262 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah man. This is the problem with photographers on instgram. All the photos are soooo cliche that it's not even worth giving a like. Then they cry why engagement is low. Even though they don't realize the viewer has seen this a million times already.

    • @batsonelectronics
      @batsonelectronics 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I offer a few suggestions ( I really like classic Rembrandt lighting ) to give them some ideas and try to let them decide what STYLE they want. I don't do a lot of editing so if they don't have a preference and they would benefit from more flat lighting, I shoot that way. I am a lower cost studio because I want everyone to have a good family/Self portrait with pets if wanted, so I cater to the poorer who maybe wouldn't get anything normally. I have health problems and are limited so I do enough to make a living but trying to also give something to those who can't afford other photographers in the area. You have to find out what they expect in order to make them happy.

    I was for sure a "copycat" and just realized it recently haha. I was so captivated by the attention other people got and thought that's I had to take that exact photo in that exact location that got a lot of likes and that's how I would be happy, but in reality it ruined my creativity! Lately I've not been on social media as often and focused more on the actual art of photography and what expresses my creativity the most, and I truly feel better about myself and my photos! Thanks for putting what I've been doing into words, lol

    Probably one of the better videos I've seen in a while. Everyone has gone 'I'm a photographer vlogger', or 'Gear Reviewer', and not many come out that actually help people understand the gear they already have. Personally, I don't care what you had for lunch on one of your trips. I don't need to sit though 10 minutes of your life to get an improve answer to some question that the title was implying. I think the entire photo/video TH-cam Culture is less teach, and more preach. So I'm glad you did some much needed preaching on this one! :)

    I've been lazy asf in the past, especially during peak wedding season when I would feel burned out. Using the same poses over and over just because they were safe. The JPG point was spot on. I spent 3 years as a photographer at a summer camp. I shot JPG only because there just wasn't time to even unload RAW photos to keep for later. To be honest, I was nervous about it at first, but now I wouldn't change a thing. JPGs 100% worked in that environment.

I’m in a college program because I wanted help but didn’t like the all those “click here for my *not so free* workshops” only to tell me what I already know. Your perspective has definitely helped and has both confirmed what I’ve been taught thus far and will continue to learn in the program so thank you. I know next year they’ll teach us more technical skills and video and how what type of lighting works but also how to adapt to various changes. Most of my professors do both still and video as well.

    That's a good one. I'm by far no pro photographer, but I definitely passed most of the lazy parts you told about. But those prime lenses with f1.8 are so amazing. It really took me a while to get used to it, using a higher aperture, especially as I mostly shoot landscape.

    • @batsonelectronics
      @batsonelectronics 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I shoot landscapes, I use F8 - F16 on Full Frame. I only use my F1.4 or F1.8 lenses at that F stop when indoors shooting motion. If am shooting a flower or something smaller, I may use F1.8-2.8 for creative background or foreground blur.

    Only issue w/ the whole a photographer only shoots photos argument is the fact that the title literally describes the job. PHOTOgrapher is just that photo and why there is another title for video called Videographer. So saying a PHOTOgraper is lazy for not shooting video is a stretch. Now not saying one doesn't need to adapt and be versatile and understand how to shoot video, but again if I'm hiring a photographer its b/c I want excellent photos, and if I want a kick ass video well then I'd hire a videograper, not saying a single individual can't be both, but they're two distinctive talent sets and why we have two different titles to describe said skill sets. We also have the title hybrid shooter which I guess one would strive to become as it entails you understand and are skilled in both skill sets.

    the RAW comment is what I needed to hear. In my last work trip a couple weeks ago I remember thinking, why tf am I filming with my cinema camera when I could just use my DSLR and get similar results and the client will be just as happy. Just cause I have a cinema camera doesnt mean I need to use it for EVERY project especially when the client is just going to throw it on TH-cam and Twitter.

    Great intro Chris. Hmm, actually I haven’t been guilty of any of these, even as a beginner nor when my first digital camera was a point-and-shoot. I used to do weddings and portraits until I had to adapt to using the wheelchair rather than my canes as my health got worse. I did a couple in it, but that’s another story.
    I don’t have to worry about that kinda G.A.S. because my medical bills have completely drowned any gear buying budget.
    I know a lot of photographers who used to get so annoyed with me for disagreeing on lighting when I’d say, “Whatever light you’re shooting in is the best.” Ooh, or the ones who will only take a portrait on cloudy days claiming sunlight is awful for photos… ugh, it looks like you took a portrait on a cloudy day ‘cause ya did and now you’re over-processing to compensate to pretend it looks like ya photographed at sunset. 🙄
    I’ve never been keen on the notion of golden hour either. Actually around here about 2-3 hours before sunset gives the most natural light, best colors, texture, and depth of shadows and light on a good day if I were to choose… ‘course I also do astrophotography, so there’s that.
    I’ve also never grasped the concept that SO many photographers have about only taking pictures, and minimal at that, when paid. There are so many missed moments there, lifetimes really if they refuse to take photos of family. Or they rarely take photos of family and friends with their real cameras, opting for the wide-angled distortion and major software compensation of a cell phone.
    I wholeheartedly agree on so many images looking too similar; either shooting them purposefully that way or over-editing in post to make them look that way. It’s like the cookie cutter shot.

    100% agree on jpeg/raw thing.
    My rule is when it's a creative shoot, I shoot raw. If it's an event, I switch to jpeg.
    Importing 1k raw photos to lightroom takes forever and you can only do few edits on event photos anyways, not worth the time or space for raw

    • @joshhamilton2108
      @joshhamilton2108 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree, i shoot club images/event images in RAW there is so much value in being able to adjust data so much more.
      Yeah you might sacrifice a little bit of time when importing and exporting but its definitely worth that time.
      Ive created my own presets to suit certain events and using masking to make subjects pop when needed, guarantee you'd see much more value in your shots if you just slowed down and didn't slap em out as hella pixelated JPEGS

      I can shoot 2-3k pics for a night club and edit and send out 4-500 in about 30 mins with raw. Because it’s a night event raw files are BEST. So yeah? Why would you switch? Maybe raw+ jpeg. But if you’re giving unedited pics you’re doing it wrong haha

    What sets apart a „pro“ from a „lazy“ person is the skillset. You might see a pro roll up with tons of fancy gear, yes. But the real difference is that a pro can - on the whole - deliver the same result without it and just uses the „lazy option“ as a convenience and speed factor. Time is money, and there is little to be won financially by showing off how good you are by „going in raw“ (no pun intended) and being able to still deliver. Doing this you only might cut your output in half for no reason other than to feel good about yourself. Of course this also depends heavily on context.
    One example: I do work with a TV production company sometimes. They film about 90% of their TV coverage in 1080p and in a compressed format. Even though most of their gear can capture raw video in 4K or higher. And it is plenty enough. There is a huge difference between having to import footage that you can edit and export straight away as opposed to importing your footage, building proxies, doing color correction / grading and THEN editing. And that is not even touching the subject of how frigging long it takes to ingest and process 4K raw video footage, especially if there is lots of it. The upside is: You can do a lot with RAW. The downside is you *have to* do a lot with RAW.

    I stick to raw since I know I don’t need to rush my output speed and I’ve never gone gear crazy either.
    I have stuck mainly with the basic 18-55 kit lens because I like pushing my camera boundaries and I like showing people that it isn’t all about the gear you have but rather the focus you put into learning everything possible about your gear as well as not being afraid to end up with slightly grainy photos.
    Photo ideas I’ve always wanted to be different and always seek a different perspective. I especially noticed how everyone goes for the same exact photo when I started attending photo meets and so I always take a step back see what everyone is doing and then do the complete opposite because there is no point in getting a “good” photo if 20 other people have the exact same one at that point it just comes down to the model posting the image of whoever sent it to them fastest

      I've quite a similar philosophy and I don't even use artificial lights. I thought of selling prints but on zooming in, there's slight shake in many of them since I love to shoot in low light conditions. Also, the shadows are full of noise. And editing only accentuates it.
