Melvin Johnson I meant that my backgrounds are a mix of these three DR, PR and Cuba. My father is of Puerto Rican, Mexican and Cuban descent and my mother is Puerto Rican, Cuban and Brazilian. I meant that I love that I have this mix in me. My family and I know about this. The African tribes of my bloodline come from West African; the Yoruba, Igbo, and Fulani tribes.

It's so strange that all these countries, Brazil, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico , etc in the Caribbean got their music, art, everything from African ancestors. They profit and exude it to the world as exotic. Something to come to their islands and see. But hey refuse to include people who look like their ancestors. They want the provenance , but not the people who it comes from. Pretending it doesn't exist doesn't make it go away. Especially when everyone with eyes can see it.

OMG... I've been saying that for the longest.... they put a white face on the culture and music when it was created by blacks ONLY. They tell us the spanish contributed to the latin sound by using guitars but africans before slavery used guitars so again the entertainment side is wholly african. I hate it when they show salsa dancing with a black man and white hispanic when both featured should be black - erasing the black woman.

Farisa Smith we don’t exude it to the world as exotic. It’s every day life to us it’s our culture. It’s Americans who look at our culture like it exotic and treat our people like we’re tropical fruits instead of humans. Tourists. They give us money to fulfill whatever fantasy of our island they’ve built their heads.

I am half Cuban, and this is all very interesting. I've always been told by my Cuban grandparents that racism in Cuba does not exist -- and I think their reasoning for saying such was due to a lot of interracial marriages within the country lol. My grandparents are one: my grandpa is white and my grandma is mulatta (black/white). Sadly, they never admitted that there was obvious racism in the country, although I could tell otherwise. My grandma always insisted her sons, and her grandchildren marry someone lighter skin with "good hair;" she herself has afro-textured hair. Strangely enough, my grandfather was the opposite and always enjoyed the presence of my ethnic friends (friends from different countries/cultures and skin tones).
It would be nice to know more about Cuba -- as I have to agree us Latinas/Latinos take pride in being from w.e country we are from despite our race. Nonetheless, I've constantly watched women and men in our country make a great emphasis on having lighter skin and silky/straight or loose curls -- if that doesn't scream colorism and racism I don't know what does. The beauty in being Latina/Latino is the coming together of different races, and that I can say is beautiful. Nonetheless, issues of racism and colorism need to be addressed, otherwise, opportunities for growth in certain people groups will continue to stagnate. I find that's what whites want to see, they want to be in control, and that stems from sheer greed. Praying that we can see real change for the black community, and those looked down upon simply because of their color. We have to do better as humans.

What kills me about the whole “racism doesn’t exist here” comment is most of the people who aren’t affected by it are the ones who try to defend it or get offended when someone who is affected by it points it out. If you’re living privileged and you enjoy that comfortable lifestyle, of course you aren’t going to want to disturb it. So if you aren’t disturbed and if it doesn’t affect you, stop being so quick to make comments about the people who are directly affected or has been affected by it. Unless you’re guilty af. If the shoe fits wear it, if not shut up and keep it pushing.

In the USA white could not marry blacks.... in the Caribbean and Latin America , the Spaniard and the Portuguese did not have that problem and that is why Cuba has a massive number of MIXED RACE people , not only with Spain , see Chinatown in Havana was huge , and there were chinese all thru the Island , they married and their kids are beautiful . Spain used to owned The Philippine , so Thousands and Thousands of Filipinos came to Cuba . A Large Jewish population scape Europe and came to Cuba . Lebanon was in bad shape , huge amounts of Lebanese came to Cuba and Lots of Portuguese , on the Caribbean side of Cuba , in the city of Cienfuegos, in the main square there is a small replica of the Arc de Triomphe , because in that entire area thousand of French people settled . BTW , you might not know the Cuba is about the same length of the State of California , 720 miles long , a very big Island and very diverse ... Go to Cuba , you will see what a beautiful country it is and how diverse it is . We have just been cursed with 63 years of Communist Dictatorship ... Traveling is the best education you can get but you have to see for yourself and come to your own conclusions

Very informative documentary. Yes I am an Afro American international journalist and filmmaker. I've traveled to over 45 countries and I can attest to the fact that Cuba is as racist as any other Latin American country. This is intrinsic and deeply part of the social, political, and economic structures throughout Latin America. Its very logical as it follows from the colonial relationship that the Spanish conquistadors had with both the indigenous and African populations. Its simply a power dynamic that is part of the collective consciousness of the cultural values in part of the world. There is an old expression that really simplifies the root of the Issue: " Latin America is often a mixture of African and European cultural influences. Its sees Africa as its mother, which is nurtures and sustains, however it admires and aspires to be like its father culture which is European.

@@bajankurt Brother Kurt you are head on. What it actually comes down to is POWER and peoples access to it. We not only have to look at internal forms of colonialism, but also the mental perceptions that go along with it. Many Afro- Latinos aspire to marry outside of their race in order to have off spring that are fairer colored and would have a better chance of social mobility and success. When you internalize mental inferiority, than you have a really deep problem that isn't so easy to identify or overcome.

      Scientific races.
Back in the 1700s it was theorized by a Frenchman (?). Years later someone came across his papers and it was picked up through a scientific society where they decided to use Darwin's system to try to classify humans. The members came up with quite a few systems, but they settled on the simplest one and decided the lighter the brighter, the darker the dumber, based on nothing more than cultural differences. This is what was used to justify the 3/5 rule for slavery and the demonization of all darker people.
There's a documentary called The Illusion of Race or something like that, which goes into detail.
Scientific races have been both debunked and confirmed by genetics. There were humans, Neanderthals, denisovians and other races that were close enough to be genetically compatible with humans, but they didn't survive. In most cases only their mitochondrial DNA remains in humans because it was like breeding a horse with a donkey.

I was in Cuba in 2017. People of all races & colours got along well. There was no discrimination. Our tour guide was an African-Cubana. She was very dark. She spoke English & Spanish. We stayed in home-stays, all over Cuba. The home-stays were operated by Cubans of many races & colours. In Chinatown, in Havana the Chinese people spoke Spanish. At one point in history, Cuba had the most Chinese people in the Caribbean. They were there to work in the sugar cane farms.
Don’t believe any one who tells u there is racism in Cuba. It’s not true.
Viva Cuba. God bless Cuba & the people. Best wishes from Australia 🇦🇺

I agree with you. In the cities, Black people work and are more accepted, I live in Canada and from Manitoba originally. I now live in Mississauga, ON Canada and a fairly big city. Blacks are accepted in the cities. Canada is a big country land wise but not population-wise.
In my small community of 1600 people, we had a Jamaican Doctor in our town and hardly anyone would go and Doctor with him. He was a very nice young Doctor with a family. He did not stay long because he did not have the clientele.
We have 2 reserves nearby and the First Nations People have been discriminated against throughout Canadian History and they are prejudiced against Blacks. This I learned on my own and experienced it when I worked in the hospital with First Nation Patients and I have indigenous blood in me as well but not full. So I am not making this up.
We had never had Black people living in town other than East Indian who also was a Doctor. Our Doctors that we had for years was a Philipeano Doctor and a white Doctor for like 30 years. Then we started getting white South African Doctors which some are still there.
I went to see the Black Doctor I didn't care about his color. I always think back to how the kids that I went to school with treated me for being poor and having some Indian blood in me. People are so pathetic when it comes to race.
I just want to say this color should not matter, how you are as a person and how you treat people is what should count first and foremost. But if someone of another race offends you in an ignorant way, you will think racist thoughts no matter what. I think maybe because I was so discriminated against that the ugliness reappears when someone is being rude or just plain mean.

Its sooo very said that alot of people envy the black race! Its ENVY. Why else would the race be hated so much like that. What has that race EVER DID to other races to be HATED SO MUCH?? ITS ENVY! And that is sad. Its a disgrace and the energy they put behind hating the black race is beyond skin color. Its deeper then that. Its ALL THINGS about that race they envy. They feel threatened in some way. Because if not, it would not be a race that’s so hated! I truly pray for this world!

It is difficult to establish equality when the dominant culture is European (Spain), the main language is a European one (Spanish) and every other aspect of life is dominated by European ideology. Nobody is to be blamed for this today because it happened 400 years ago. The fact that this was put in place 400 years ago means that it will be very hard to establish real equality. This is because the history of Cuba was built on European ideology and the fabric of Cuban society is woven from European ideology. There are traces of African culture as well as other cultures but Cuba is essentially an extension of Europe with Caribbean flavour.

Very interesting. I have been there twice and never saw racism amongst the Cuban people. What I did see is the French Canadians treating the staff in the resort-like they were to wait on them hand and foot.
It was my friend who was watching the situation at hand and mentioned it to me so we were both taking it all in. The next day we went on a Katamaran and these same French people were on the boat acting like a bunch of assholes. They got drunk and started fighting on the boat.
My friend was so scared. I was enjoying my drinks and was treated like royalty by one of the guys. He was really nice. I saw these French People digging change out for a tip. I gave them 10 cucs. He was so happy. I told him for all of them. That is the only racism I saw there was from outsiders, not the Cuban people.

I have a problem with the way the word 'racism' is used because it often covers every form of racial prejudice from ignorance thru bigotry and finally overt acts against people of color. This last should be reserved for racism. In that case, perhaps Cuba is no longer racist. Before 2010, racial intermarriage was prohibited. Recently, laws have been passed to ensure substantial representation of black Cubans in government. As a previous commentator pointed out, the start-up money for business comes from a largely white expat community. But the proof that racial bigotry, if not racism, exists today in Cuba is seen in the tourism sector. It is an indisputable fact, verified by one's own eyes, that the face of Cuban tourism is white. Those with positions where gratuities flow are white. Those at front desks, bars, concierge tables etc are invariably white. Is this because the Cuban government believes that tourists are uncomfortable with people of color, and sacrifices its 'we are one people' beliefs for the sake of money? In view of its own laws past and present, it seems clear that bigotry and opportunism are the reasons for racial discrimination in the tourism industry and throughout Cuban society.
