I like how a brain can refer to the brain doing things that the brain thinks it didn’t do Example: Person has random thought, why did my brain think of that?
I usually watch science videos at .85x speed because they often talk just a little too fast, so I didn't even notice I hadn't changed it until halfway through the video
Because this is the internet I feel the need to point out how much I like the new guy. I hadn't even noticed that he talks slower than the other hosts, but just noticed his calmness. Don't let the critics get you down, Andrew! You're great!
He literally says everything fine, but just too slow. Like he's over pronouncing everything he's saying, or having to think about each word way too much.
Anthony is fantastic! Very articulate, clear, and calming presentation. Everyone has a different preference for speed - honestly I'd rather have a speaker who is a bit slow for my taste as I find that adjusting the speed in the video to be faster distorts pitch less noticably. Stoked to finally see him hosting after seeing him introduced a couple times in prior videos. Always exciting to see new voices added to the SciShow crew :)
@@BrandonGraham I just downloaded the subtitles for this and the previous 2 SciShow Psych videos, and using that and the video lengths, I've calculated the number of words per minute: This video: approx. 167 wpm Previous video (hosted by Hank): approx. 178 wpm Video before that (hosted by Brit): approx. 187 wpm So, going by that, Anthony is 6% - 7% slower than Hank, and 10% - 11% slower than Brit. Whether fast is better than slow is arguable. Come to think of it, if there have been any studies into how the speaking rate affects knowledge absorption & retention in listeners, that'd be an ideal subject for a SciShow Psych video!

Hi new person 👋🏽 good to have you here. It’s nice to see that scishow has all different kinds of people, in speaking voice mostly. I like that some scientists talk faster than others, and some speak slower. It helps to better understand the information. 👍🏽
Scientist A: I’m pretty sure lateralization is unique to humans. It must be why we’re special! Scientist B: Um... Quite a lot of animals have it. Like, even chickens. A: Oh, I didn’t know that. B: Did you _check?_
Great episode! Personally I find lateralization one of the most interesting subjects, and I'm obsessed with the Corpus Callosum. Never really thought about the possible correlation between brain specialization and movement, but the evolution theory makes sense; if an animal's motor cortex more refined results in an evolutionary advantage, then it makes sense to use only one limb to speed up specialization for fine-motor skills. The one important question remaining though is if there really is a correlation between motor skills and overall hemisphere preference.
I hit like on this video for one line... “we thought humans were special.... classic”. Also thanks for the education and loving the different psych hosts
Nim Chimpsky Im not educated well enough on this interesting topic, but i think ive heard that its not often possible for the other hemisphere to take over the roles that the lost hemisphere has specialised regions for. There are also humans that still have both brain hemispheres intact, but their "corpus colossum" (the thing that mostly connects the hemispheres) is cut (to prevent seizures and such) and those humans have strangely "impared" cognitive skills (type "split brain" if you are interested)
Interesting question. i have heard that there are specialised regions in the different hemispheres, but idk why the brains topology is as such. maybe throu the process of evolution? would love to hear an experts answer to this.
@@maxmusterman3371 i believe SciShow did a video ("Surprising body parts you can live without") about how people can live without significant parts of the brain. I can't check right now, but I think they mentioned that one side of the brain can "compensate" for losing use/access of the other
How can I find out what are the main functions of the right brain (more specifically), and also test them on myself - to see how good or not I can perform them? I'm asking for specific info or a guide, as I discovered that I have underdeveloped right hemisphere (you can see in my avatar picture - it's mirrored as MRI produces the images so, but the white area to the side between the skull and the hemi-sphere is basically water)
I read some of the comments so it seems New Guy everyone likes you. Some segment cuts in the video seem a bit slower than others but I guess it comes with time 'cause you're a ...new guy. :P
Our brain is split into two sides because, of safety reasons, one side can duplicate the other, in case of Damage. Also we have two eyes, and two ears, so each side of our brain can handle one ear & one eye. This gives us faster response time, by way of 3D spatiality & resonence, we can see and hear and feel and sense, all that is going on all around us, at all times, until we become tired, then we have to stop and slow down and rest and nap. Then we can nap and start up all over again.
With split-brain patients essentially becoming two persons, it would be interesting if you could split the brain into 4 (provided it could be survived) and see what would happen.
0:14 I mean, even on your literalist definition of right-brain/left-brain people, they do exist. People have survived hemispherectomies. Split brain patients essentially have two brains, a left and a right. Not for nothing, I learned this on "the internets."
Nice prank guys, slowing down the video so we play it at 1.25 speed. also LOVE the new guy, i can't wait till he learns to read out loud at a normal pace. :)
Hm.... I wonder what the brain's limit actually looks like? I mean, we constantly retain information and skills(some are just tuck away).... although since we have unique sets of aptitudes regarding kinds of information and abilities, we may just level them up at very different rates
So could a brain fart, or a random loss in train of thought that needs a second to catch up, be a side effect of a signal being transmitted between hemispheres, thus the delay accounts for the brain fart?
I’m the only one that doesn’t like the new guy. That’s honestly amazing because he’s a good presenter/speaker. I just need him to blink a -tad- bit more and he’d be perfect. I don’t know why but the “staring” is actually bothering me.
@@ryn.999 Yup. Hank seems to blink more to me though. Maybe his commentary style is just different enough so that you don't notice he's staring? Purple Fire 28 the wide eyes is probably the only reason why I noticed the staring in the first place, because I hadn’t seen it in the others at all until your previous comment.
I've never been so early to a video! I have a question: Is there an evolutionary reason why most people are right-handed VS left-handed? Or why left-handedness is so rare?
This didn't explain why when people have lost a hemisphere of their brain through injury or surgery. The Body will split the remaining hemisphere to essentially perform the tasks of 2 hemispheres therefore creating 2 half brains again.
Just to mix things up I'm left handed for fine motor skills and right handed for gross motor skills. That is, I write with my left hand but bowl and play tennis with my right.
