A few years ago i started a tiny side business of custom duping discontinued beauty products. Ty for showing the repotting it made me smile to realize how far ive come. Its so messy when you first start. Lol I mix every day just for the love of it. Giving custom made beauty products to my closest friends as gifts is so rewarding.
I depotted all my eyeshadows and put them in magnetic pallets with a clear window on the front. I have adhd, and if I can't see my collection it doesn't exist. After doing this I no longer feel the need to buy more because I can dupe almost any pallet that comes out with my collection. It makes me use what I have.
this sounds so smart. i don’t have adhd and don’t even have a massive shadow collection but i also easily forget what i own! out of sight, out of mind.
@dawnmarie240 kinda depends on the packaging, also some pans aren't magnetic so you will have to order some self adhesive little magnetic peices to stick onto them. Most of my collection is indie makeup because they're just such good quality shadows and the packaging for the most part is cardboard, but if it's hard plastic you'll have to use a lighter to heat the bottom to melt through and poke each pan out. Colour pop is the easiest to depot because they have magnetic packaging so you can use a magnet to get them out perfectly
Travelling with all your makeup essentials in a flat case sounds like heaven. I find most of my heaviest items when I travel are my toiletries and makeup bags. While there were some moments during the decanting process where I found myself holding my breath, the end results looked incredibly carefree and lightweight. My questions for you were how did the application process go? Did you mostly use your fingers or were you able to use brushes? Did the products migrate to the other pallettes during use? And finally, were the amount of products you decanted into the tiny medium palette size, enough for a months worth? I would think the foundation especially must have been a challenge to make it last.
Having a lighter makeup bag *was* heaven! Application worked well - I just used my fingers neatly to avoid the products crossing over into other pans 👍 I apply all of my creamy makeup (cream blush, cream bronzer, cream shadow etc) with my fingers anyway, so there was no difference to my usual routine. I still packed some other products around the palette (I'll show you how I decanted liquid makeup like skin tints and foundation in an upcoming video!), but even after using some of these pans most days for a month, I hardly made a dent in them! Just goes to show that you use *so much less* than you think you need (particularly on a summer trip where some days are makeup-free and sunscreen-only anyway) x
I'm also that crazy person depoting everything after starring at the original package for more than a few years, i've recently discovered Kitpak and it's life changing. I'm not a makeup artist but it's helped open up so much space in my makeup bag now....perhaps too much for more shopping 😂
Ooh I'll have a look at Kitpak, thank you for the suggestion! Definitely not a makeup artist here either, but I've always admired their beautifully arranged kits. It's an art in itself! 👏🎨 x
This was so immensely satisfying to watch Matilda! I think that it’s much better to see people actually using and enjoying their makeup than keeping it in pristine condition, untouched in a drawer somewhere. Also there’s a limit to how long makeup stays good for anyway so you might as well enjoy it! I love that this gives you options while you’re away but takes up less space. It’s inspired me to try it for the next time I go away. I already have a few palette knives in my art collection, I will just see if I can find a palette to depot my products into. Looking forward to part 2 😊❤
This reminds me of the time I saved a bunch of Salt New York cream products that had gotten crystallized from the waxes separating; I felt so bad because I'd never even used them, I just let them sit around for too long. Instead of a hair dryer, which I didn't own, I placed the pans on top of a wax warmer. As soon as they softened I stirred them up and smoothed them out as best I could and they were as good as new.
Love this! I have a feeling you'll be doing more and more depotting in the future! Next step is getting a label maker to stick to the back of the pans so that when you run out or hit pan, you can easily know which product and shade is in the pan at the start. 💜☺
Thank you Patricia! Absolutely, I see more mini palettes in my future, and don't get me started on label makers! That would be so fun 😍👏 I know Harry Makes It Up always labels her palettes so beautifully x
Absolutely Melissa! Although I always want to prioritise hygiene with any products I'm applying with my fingers, so it would be best for 'in the work bathroom after washing your hands' kind of touch ups ☺️👍 x
I often run late getting ready for work in the morning, so most days I finish my makeup at the office. Depotting and downsizing my products into this exact palette and also the little Moji tubes you recommended has made my morning routine less cumbersome. Thank you
Thank you so much! I absolutely can't take credit for the concept though - I was inspired by makeup artists (like Harry Makes It Up who I'd seen using the same Artist Kit Company palettes) who decant/depot most products so neatly to make their artist kits easier to travel with. Very happy to have my own special palette now! 🥰🎨 x
It was so satisfying to watch and you did a great job with selecting those five blushes. Also, I feel like all those blushes started to look much more interesting (shades-wise) in comparison to their original packaging.
Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it! Isn't that interesting - I wonder if the colours jump out more when they're right next to different tones? The shade differences become more noticeable ☺️👍 x
I have a mini palette teint from Bobbi brown with all the basics, that was such a great idea but unfortunately is no longer available, so I refill it with the full size products and it’s always on my bag. I’m glad to see I’m not the only one to do that. Thank for your videos always a pleasure to watch
The thumbnail drew me in and the whole process was so satisfying to watch! I once made my own palette out of almost-empty lipsticks and I wish I’d know about those artist palettes back then!
I spend the entire day out of my house, i go to the gym, university and then work, only getting home at around 10pm to 11pm. So i did this same thing with palettes sold in my country, it is AMAZING having them on the go. I have a face palette (councealer, bronzer, contour, highlighter) and a blush/lipstick palette. Plus a tiny one that only fit 3 pans in case i want something even more minimal on the go. I take pans from the other ones for the tiny one. A tip: if you are using heat anyways, use the iron bit from a flat iron. Like put the pan on top of the flat part and wait till the makeup melts, then mix it with something like a pin or a needle to take out the bubbles that form. My products where fine after that and it didn't take away from the quality.
I love this video, Matilda! Makeup should most definitely be used and slicing into them to make a mini palette (especially to use up the last little bit that would’ve had to be dug into anyway!) is such a good way to go 🥰 So excited for the next one and would love to see what you end up doing with the small square pans!
Been looking forward to this video ever since you posted your ig reel!! I’m looking to depot for travel as well. Also it was lovely seeing more of your personality in this video, Matilda! 🫶
I just looooove listening to your voice so much. And the visuals are very pleasing to the eyes as well! Thank you for always doing your best to provide these high quality contents!
Random tidbit but I just now noticed I say "Hello there" to my cat like you do in the intros without realizing it. It comes out so naturally but only that phrase!😂 My sister was the one who pointed it out lol. I have a southern accent the rest of the time except when saying hello to our cat😅 Love your videos! Keep up the great work!❤️
Thank you so much Brenda! Even scraping out the end of a concealer stick into a little sample pot is a good way to save it (one of my viewers shared that great idea a long time ago!) ☺️👍 x
I can’t wait to see what other products you packed. Do I spy a Bakeup Beauty palette? I just got my first one thanks to your previous recommendations and I’m loving it for traveling
I used to do this using a Bobbi Brown palette that you could buy empty and squish her foundation sticks and pot rouge into. This is such a great idea - I quite like the labelling at the end and wonder if you could use a special white marker to write the names on the lid. ❤❤❤
Im obsessed with the color story you decided to go with! Haha i would absolutely buy a palette from you! I've actually used old z-palettes and depotted eyeshadow palettes I dont use and put the shades I will use in the z-palette:)
That was amazing! Such a nice way to minimize space and amounts of compacts opened each morning during travel. I love! I was inspired to decante my liquid tint and foundation in my last summer trip. There was no need for glass bottles in my makeup bag . Same for facewash, and moisturizer. Turns out I used my tiny decants for like a month after I got home.
Thank you Anca! Ahh great minds think alike when it comes to decanting liquid complexion products. See you for another video soon 😉✨ So true, we never use anywhere near as much product on a trip as we think we will! x
Love depotting my creams, I’ve been doing it for years! it helps so much to have my makeup on the go, diminish storage, and pick up stuff for travel. I was never able to get my hands on this brand, but other options are the Vueset palettes, MYO, and KitPack, all more readily available in the E.U.
@@matildaonvideo I'm going to Las Vegas in December, and I know that I like to have options for lipsticks so putting it in a palette like this will be perfect for my carry on bag!
I was so happy when my phone beeped with your video. Such a great makeup selection. I have a similar get up in a art Deco magnetic eye shadow/ blush/concealer - foundation pk. Really good just need mascara, face powder and some lip balm. I've done that in the past, so beautiful ❤❤❤❤
This was so fun and satisfying to watch! As scary as slicing a product may seem (even if it doesn’t ruin the product), I bet it was all the more satisfying to do haha! Also did giggle a bit at the slips 😂 can’t wait for part two!! :)
I was waiting for the label making for the back of the pallet. 🤭 Such a great idea for travel. I used to buy Makeup Geek eyeshadow and blush singles and put them in pallets. I still have them 🫣 Remember when fixing smashed powder pans was a thing? I did that too. 🤓
you should try les filles en route makeup. La palette visage is an absolute perfect palette for everyday but mostly for travelling. I love the concealer two in shade nymph - clair ! I think you would like the natural Jeanne Damas look 😊
Yesss Clarissa, I first tried Rouje makeup when it launched, before it became Les Filles en Rouje! Such chic products, and I love Jeanne Damas' style. I featured her on my channel many years ago 😍💄 x
I was searching for minimalist travel makeup when I found your wonderful video! I’m over 70 and want to limit my 311 bag to as few liquids as possible. I’m trying to decide between depotting a shimmery mineral powder foundation I already have or maybe try a moist medium to full coverage solid stick cream drugstore foundation. All suggestions appreciated! PS-At home, my lipstick of the day doubles as my blush.
This was so satisfying Matilda! Can’t wait to see your next one. I’ve made several blush palettes with empty pretty lipstick palette holders with small pans that are great for travel, but no full face ones because I could never find a palette small enough for travel but big enough to fit them all in. I will be getting the ones you linked for sure. I am a blush lover as well and I always overdo the number of blushes I have to take on any trip.
Thank you! 'Satisfying' is what I was hoping for 🥰 Great to hear you've experimented with depotting too! Hope you enjoy the Artist Kit Company palettes if you try out the process again x
This was a satisfying watch . It’s nice seeing all the shades out in the open. I was looking at the westman blush thinking what a pretty colour . Then it dawned on me. I have that shade but don’t use it enough . When I should. That’s the great thing with what you did. Do you recon they will dry out in the pallets in the long run?
I use a similar palette not even for travel but just to salvage the leftover product. If you have a lot of makeup that's in a stick or bullet format, l strongly recommend one of these. With most brands you loose at least 1/4 of the amount because of the packaging design.
Yes to the salvaging part of the process! 👏 A long time ago, one of my viewers also suggested using tiny sample pots from beauty stores like Sephora or Mecca to depot what's left in tubes that don't twist up anymore x
Beautiful final product! These rectangular pans are good if you use fingers. I think I would prefer round pans even though they don't fill up the space as efficiently because I prefer to use brushes and don't want to dip into adjacent pans.
What a great idea! I always scrape the bottom of my makeup sticks to try and enjoy every single bit of them, but it never occurred to me to put them in a palette. The smaller pans you bought would be great for a lip palette I reckon - one that you can use a small brush for. I'd love to see that as a part 2 ❤
Such a great way to cut down on packaging when you're looking to minimise. Glad you enjoyed your trip! I'd probably only do this when I reach the end of a product. lol.
I saw your last video and ordered the kit last week so I could get it delivered before you uploaded the tutorial! So excited to try it with my cream blushes and lipsticks!
If you have an electric griddle like you would use for pancakes you can use that with a piece of foil to warm the pans for depotting. Beautiful palettes, Matilda.
This is so cool! I literally went traveling last week and had to decide on one lipstick for the whole trip for space😅 wish I had thought of palettes like this!!
Thank you Sarah! I admire that self-control 💄👏 We can always surprise ourselves with how little we need when we travel, particularly if you pack an absolute favourite product! x
So fun! I’d love to know what tools you used to apply then as I would think a brush would pick up several colors at a time as the pigments are so close together
I just used my fingers! I apply all of my creamy makeup (cream blush, cream bronzer, cream shadows etc) with my fingers anyway, so there was no difference to my usual routine ☺️👍 I'll share which brush I used for my lip palette in the next episode! x
I am definitely going to safe my so-called finished tubed blushers, bronzer, concealers, counters, foundations, lipsticks and use what is left to make my own take along palette. Thanks for sharing this video, I appreciate it!💄💯✌🏽
Thank *you* for watching Angie! So glad you'll now have a way to make the most of what's left in those tubes. Let me know how you go if you make your own! ☺️👍🎨 x
Thank you Stacey! 🥰🎨 Ooh what were the trickiest parts for you? Hopefully it didn't put you off DIY palettes for life and you might try again one day! Practice makes progress x
Don't worry Carolyn, I did have a note in my phone to remind me which blush shade was which the day I made the palette, but I ended up remembering the differences without any trouble! Maybe I'm just too attached to my blush collection 😂🎨 x
Your masterpiece your muse your damn right. They are amazing and so inspiring. I made one of these palettes of all the lipsticks that I wasn’t using. (5 in total) My only problem with the lipstick palette is there is no place for me to put a lip brush and I hate using my fingers. Still dreaming up of a way to ‘stick’ a mini lip brush on the palette. I found a tinimini it’s Betsy Estée Lauder lip brush with a cap!
I love your vidoes, they're so chill ❤Irecently made a small handbag palette, inspired by Jeane Dammas brand Rouje - beautiful packaging with mutipurpose colour. I converted a rectangular vintage powder compact that holds 6 pans - 2 small & 4 square - of my favourite lipsticks & a concealer. I worked so well & hasn't wrecked anything, well worth trying 🤩
I'm curious to know what brushes you used or how you applied the colour from such a small pan, did you used your fingers and then blended with a brush?
I just used my fingers Beatriz! I apply all of my creamy makeup (cream blush, cream bronzer, cream shadows etc) with my fingers anyway, so there was no difference to my usual routine ☺️👍 I'll share which brush I used for my lip palette in the next episode! x
Very neat and organised so satisfying to watch. Hmm just wondering if you can melt them in the oven in a low temperature after you put the products in?
Thank you Wunna! ☺️🎨 I definitely wouldn't want to risk putting my palette or pans anywhere near the oven - you'd be better off just gently using a hair dryer again if you wanted to melt the surface to a neater end point x
I recently decanted my foundation (a Rimmel) into a concealer pen for my trip to Manila (specifically to IVE's concert). Now I'm contemplating if I should condense my makeup kit thanks to my best friend suggested that I should buy chrome eyeshadow singles (from a local brand called ISSY which is viral for its customizable palette for the face and eyes) for our future concert trips
Hi Matilda! This is such a fun and convenient idea, so great for traveling indeed! Although my palette would also be full of cream blushes as they work multifunctional for me haha xx
Oh no, unlucky timing Elizabeth! But I've heard great things about Salt NYC so I hope you enjoy your palette ☺️🎨 Which products did you choose to go in it? x
I will probably never have the heart to do this (maybe just for my lipsticks ) but you did it so well Matilda! Just a question, does depotting affect the applicability or the texture of the products in anyway as in the way it is applied when from its original packaging and when you apply from the pan does the effect look different on your skin? I’m just curious because I wonder there should be a specific reason why products come in certain styles of packaging other than to appeal to the eye. x
Thank you Jagyoseni! I mention in the video that the Chanel cream highlighter was the only product that felt more melty and soft in the pan - everything else felt and looked the same, and was easy to apply and blend with my fingers like I do in my usual routine ☺️👍 x
Thank you Lucia! I understand the hesitation, don't worry 😂 but it's great that I can still use the original Westman stick *and* not have to pack that bulky packaging on trips, the palette can come with me instead! x
I understand this concept, I really do and admire it....but this hurts me 😔 I have done this in the past for travel as well and I never go back and use the product up. My solution is I buy palettes for travel like the Makeup forever Hd Palette. It's great!
I've seen those Makeup Forever palettes, they look lovely Lauren! But I'd never get use out of all the shades / find exact shade matches for me, so making my own version was so fun ☺️🎨 This palette has stayed in my everyday makeup bag so I'm still using it most days! x
As someone who depots almost ALL her makeup: please do not use a hair dryer. use a candle warmer, put all the products scraped in (don't have to make it neat and flat at the top) and it will melt into the metal container with a perfect finish, no mess, and the same consistency it was before you took it out of the packaging (just scraping/fitting it can make it chunky/grainy/more emmolient). This was aesthetic but I promise it is soo much easier and smoother this way
I’m surprised of how much I enjoyed watching this considering I almost closed my eyes when you cut the first product 😅 I could never do it for me but happy it worked for you
Not messy at all Desiree! I was really careful with it and used it gently, controlling where my fingertips landed so I wasn't spreading product between each pan. There's a more recent look at it in my Everyday Makeup Routine video from last week! ☺️🎨 x
Soothing. Beautiful. Excellent commentary. Ahhhh how I love these videos!

See you for another video soon 😉✨ So true, we never use anywhere near as much product on a trip as we think we will! x
Your voice is so calming! ❤
Thank you! So lovely of you to say 🥰 x
Thank you so much for sharing other options available outside the US, this is so helpful! 👆👏 x
This definitely inspired me to make my own travel palette for when i go on vacation later this year!
So happy to hear that Allyson, thank you! 😄👏 Please let me know how it turns out. Where are you off to? x
@@matildaonvideo I'm going to Las Vegas in December, and I know that I like to have options for lipsticks so putting it in a palette like this will be perfect for my carry on bag!
I was sooo excited for this video! This is a great way to make the most of every product
Thank you so much! So happy you were excited to see it 🥰 x
Thank you Rebecca, hearing that makes *me* happy! 🥰 Glad you've tried something like this too x
This was so fun and satisfying to watch! As scary as slicing a product may seem (even if it doesn’t ruin the product), I bet it was all the more satisfying to do haha! Also did giggle a bit at the slips 😂 can’t wait for part two!! :)
Thank you so much! So glad you enjoyed it, slips and all 😂👏 x
I was waiting for the label making for the back of the pallet. 🤭 Such a great idea for travel. I used to buy Makeup Geek eyeshadow and blush singles and put them in pallets. I still have them 🫣 Remember when fixing smashed powder pans was a thing? I did that too. 🤓
Haha I wish I had a label maker Cathy! That might have to be an upgrade to the process in future 😄🎨 x
A big yes to depotting and keepsake palettes. I reused a pretty Burberry palette of mine for my handbag.
What a great idea Merida! I'm glad you still get to enjoy that lovely packaging 😍 x
you should try les filles en route makeup.
I love this video, it's so creative!
Thank you so much Miriam! I had a lot of fun putting the video together, let alone making the palettes themselves! 😄🎨 x
So satisfying!!
Thank you Jennifer! 😍 x
Beautiful final product! These rectangular pans are good if you use fingers. I think I would prefer round pans even though they don't fill up the space as efficiently because I prefer to use brushes and don't want to dip into adjacent pans.
Thank you! I share which brush I used for my lip palette in the next episode, stay tuned 😉💄 x
Thank you Alexandra! Part two is already coming soon 😉💄 Great to hear you're also into using up every last bit of your products! x
Such a great way to cut down on packaging when you're looking to minimise. Glad you enjoyed your trip! I'd probably only do this when I reach the end of a product. lol.
that Merit slice did make me miss a breath but I definitely worth it in the end
Hahaha me too, but I'm so relieved I pulled it off Caroline! 😅🎨 Still works well in its little bubble packaging and in the palette too x
Cannot wait for part 2
See you soon! 😉💄 x
I love making lil palettes in emptied and cleaned out eyeshadow pans. I think of it as meal prepping make up haha
I saw your last video and ordered the kit last week so I could get it delivered before you uploaded the tutorial! So excited to try it with my cream blushes and lipsticks!
Wow Saumya, now that was fast! 🤩👏 Hope you enjoy the process at home x
This was very satisfying to watch!! My brain would totally forget which item is what though.
Thank you! 🥰🎨 I wrote a note in my phone to help with the shade placement at first, but I ended up remembering them all ok! x
I’d love to have a video explaining any tips and tricks for how you used these palettes while traveling.
This feels kinda similar to travel watercolour boxes, just with much shallower tins!
Ooh I like that comparison! ☺️🎨 x
I’d be doing this with lots of 💄 lipsticks. 😃
Love your attention to detail and how beautiful everything looks.
Thank you Memory! It was a fun project for a perfectionist 😂🎨 x
If you have an electric griddle like you would use for pancakes you can use that with a piece of foil to warm the pans for depotting. Beautiful palettes, Matilda.
Thank you Jessa! 😄🎨 Great suggestion (now I wish I had an electric griddle for pancakes haha) x
Love love love.
Thank you so much Maddison! 🥰🎨 x
I apply all of my creamy makeup (cream blush, cream bronzer, cream shadows etc) with my fingers anyway, so there was no difference to my usual routine ☺️👍 I'll share which brush I used for my lip palette in the next episode! x
ahh this is soooo satisfying -- definitely want to streamline my nude stix blushes too!
Thank you so much Maggy! Ooh imagine a palette *full* of Nudestix blush shades 😱😍 x
Use a candle jar warmer or inexpensive coffee mug warmer to warm your pans and melt the product; let rest 10 min and chill for 10-15 min.
@@matildaonvideo Definitely!💖
This was so satisfying to watch! I tried something similar years ago but did not have much success.
Thank you Stacey! 🥰🎨 Ooh what were the trickiest parts for you? Hopefully it didn't put you off DIY palettes for life and you might try again one day! Practice makes progress x
Thank you. Great video. ❤❤❤
so satisfying!
Thank you Shelly! I think so too 😍🎨 x
Loved this!!!
Thank you Ashley! 😄🎨 x
Best video yet.
I don't often wear makeup but I loved watching this video!
Thank you Rebecca! Appreciate you being here 🥰 x
This is so fun! Thank you xx
Thank *you* Lauren! So glad you enjoyed watching 😄🎨 x
I love it, but would have forgotten what everything was in seconds 😂😂😂 me and my spotty memory! 😂 I hope you had much better of a time!
Don't worry Carolyn, I did have a note in my phone to remind me which blush shade was which the day I made the palette, but I ended up remembering the differences without any trouble! Maybe I'm just too attached to my blush collection 😂🎨 x
Love this video!!
Thank you Ceren! 🥰🎨 x
Your masterpiece your muse your damn right. They are amazing and so inspiring. I made one of these palettes of all the lipsticks that I wasn’t using. (5 in total)
My only problem with the lipstick palette is there is no place for me to put a lip brush and I hate using my fingers.
Omg you are a brave brave brave woman😂.... but I loved watching you cut and press and scrape. Very satisfying❤...
Thank you Maizura! Such a satisfying process ☺️🎨 x
Hi Matilda! This is such a fun and convenient idea, so great for traveling indeed! Although my palette would also be full of cream blushes as they work multifunctional for me haha xx
I'm glad I'm not the only one who wouldn't be able to consolidate their cream blushes Violet 😂😍 Thank you for watching! x
Oh my, this is amazing !! If only I could have seen it 2 weeks ago . . . I just invested in SALTNYC because it has this same concept!
Oh no, unlucky timing Elizabeth! But I've heard great things about Salt NYC so I hope you enjoy your palette ☺️🎨 Which products did you choose to go in it? x
@@matildaonvideo Lip + Cheek - Mauve
Radiant - Beige
Sculpt + Bronze - Taupe (too light)
Sneaky Balm - SB N10 (Love)
Lip + Cheek - Horny
Sculpt + Bronze - Med Deep
This was good advice and a great life hack.
Thank you Catherine! ☺️🎨 x
Dont know if i could slice into my Westman Atelier 😅 i love the finished product though! ❤
Thank you Lucia! I understand the hesitation, don't worry 😂 but it's great that I can still use the original Westman stick *and* not have to pack that bulky packaging on trips, the palette can come with me instead! x
I understand this concept, I really do and admire it....but this hurts me 😔
I have done this in the past for travel as well and I never go back and use the product up.
This was aesthetic but I promise it is soo much easier and smoother this way
I’m surprised of how much I enjoyed watching this considering I almost closed my eyes when you cut the first product 😅 I could never do it for me but happy it worked for you
Hahaha I completely understand that reaction, I'm sure you're not alone 😂🫣 but the end result was so worth it for me! x
Really Cool 👌🥰👍😎
I’m curious if the palette got super messy with daily use? How does it look now? 😊
Not messy at all Desiree! I was really careful with it and used it gently, controlling where my fingertips landed so I wasn't spreading product between each pan. There's a more recent look at it in my Everyday Makeup Routine video from last week! ☺️🎨 x
