I do not see there that Sofía Coppola's performance deserves the avalanche of criticism that it brought at the time, quite the opposite. She herself made it clear that being an actress was not her desire at all. To my understanding, she played the role of a young and innocent girl, with high education and respect for family tradition, still oblivious to the machinations of her mafia family. Her ignorance or lack of knowledge of the world in which her relatives operate makes her pure soul. She is a timeless, atypical and iconic beauty, which shows her character to be healthily captivating and the young age of both the actress and the character justifies her inexperience, perhaps, and that definitely works in her favor! Everything is calculated in Mary Corleone's performance, right down to her blatant challenge to her father (the basket scene), her half-conscious expression of reality ("you are using me to pull the strings" in the attic), her immature whimsy on the stairs that will lead to her death... Let's just be honest, if this was *ANY* other actress, she wouldn't have been hated for this role. I think people solely hated this because she is Francis Ford Coppola's daughter. This was a really good movie. Was it great? Not quite. But compared to the first 2 Godfather movies, what movies are great?
Bro idk what the writers were thinking 😭😭 The only thing I can think of now off the top of my head is this. In the Bible, powerful men who did wrong in the sight of the Lord had calamity brought upon them. And all kind of things happened to their throne and their family. This sort of mirrors that with all the evil the Corleone has done, calamity is brought upon them both internally and externally.
3:10 This was her best scene, in my opinion. Her expressions are subtle but very real, and her voice matches the quiet intimacy of the moment. Plus, she’s just so luminously beautiful. 😍
Huh I don't get the criticism she gets for this role. She perfectly encapsulates an innocent sheltered young girl forcing herself to be more grown up than she is.
I totally agree. As you say, an innocent and awkward young girl. Sheltered by her father and I felt her performance was quiet and as gentle as was her nature.
She didn’t want to do the movie Winona Ryder backed out three days before filming because of “exhaustion”. She was doing all the rehearsals while they were waiting for Ryder they didn’t have time to get a replacement as Coppola s other choice Rebecca Schaffer was killed by an obsessed fan. That’s ol when he asked sofia to do it and the cast were all on board. She isn’t bad in the film just super green and she speaks naturally monotone but she looked beautiful and did the best she could.
In retrospect I don't think a seasoned actor could have done this her role better - conversely, don't forget Sofia was also in Rumble Fish playing. For G3 she brings a certain unawareness and naive confidence as Mary. She was about the same age as her character, has a powerful successful Italian father like Mary, and experienced the unearned privilege Mary had. When the film came out , critics went in a group tizzy panning her performance. But if a Wynona Ryder or a similar actor (who is one of my favorite actors) had played the role I'm not sure we get the loss of innocence and tragedy when Mary is killed., her death symbolizes Michael's sins being revisited upon him, (he killed not just his brother, but the son of his mother and father, Michael is the one who commits the ultimate sin in the history of all three narratives. Sofia Coppola is one of my favorite writer/directors and Lost in Translation inspired my recent short film - full disclosure.
Her death was the best part of the movie. I wish it happened in the very beginning so we didn't have to suffer through her terrible acting through the whole movie!

Sofia Coppola is a great actress and a beautiful woman. I will never forget when I watched her first time in "Godfather 3".
I admire her work.
Thank you for sharing this classy movie. God bless 🙏
One of my first crushes…❤️🔥
Let's just be honest, if this was *ANY* other actress, she wouldn't have been hated for this role. I think people solely hated this because she is Francis Ford Coppola's daughter. This was a really good movie. Was it great? Not quite. But compared to the first 2 Godfather movies, what movies are great?
Are you deaf? That would make sense
with line delivery like that, she would've been hated for the role no matter who her father was.
She was terrible.
This is cinema.

8:00 Song?
Ah yes! The part nobody was asking about!
but the innocent daughter is vital for Michael story
I cant help but laugh at her dearh scene. The way she says "Dad" like shes only slightly uncomfortable
I love her in this movie to be honest.
0:41 *I WOULD JUST MELT!!!!*
Was incest really necessary?
Bro idk what the writers were thinking 😭😭
The only thing I can think of now off the top of my head is this. In the Bible, powerful men who did wrong in the sight of the Lord had calamity brought upon them. And all kind of things happened to their throne and their family. This sort of mirrors that with all the evil the Corleone has done, calamity is brought upon them both internally and externally.
First cousin love is not recommended but it is NOT incest.
@@lubnarahman4608 If 1st cousins are related, then what do you call sex between two related family members? 🤔
@@SimpleLivings sex
Half of the UK Royal family are incestuous then.@@SimpleLivings
Still in love with her, to this day.
She has gorgeous hair
She was perfect in the original Godfather movie ❤
I'd love to see her do a movie about...Connie! Who is the mover in GF 3. The relationship between her and Vincent bears scrutiny to say the least.
"I had a lot of girlfriends when I was 15"
"8yr olds?"
"Especially 8yr olds"
😳😳💀💀
Hot scene between Andy and Sofia..he is gorgeous.
0:06 What is that expression, man? 😂😂
I’ll give you a hint… he’s Italian
Technically true for the actress too
I love my first cousin. Ive always loved her!!!
And now she's a director like her dad
Her very first role was in GF1
Is She dubbed ?
No
3:10 This was her best scene, in my opinion.
Winona would’ve been so good in this role 😭
She's like the female equivalent of Keanu Reeves.
🤨
where you dreamed that out?
🫤
How so?
She's not bad looking and I'm sure she looks better than you
I really like her and Vincent together ❤
My goodness, I had heard her acting was bad but I never thought it was this bad smh 😅
