Whenever i used to sit idol and wanted to watch something short (like while having dinner) i used to watch some random episode of FRIENDS, but now your videos are my favourite thing to watch whenever i have some spare time. I never thought chess could be this fun to learn, really appreciate your videos and your thoughtful commentary. I used to love your Climbing the rating ladder series which was based on Blitz format but after watching these Standard Chess series i absolutely love them even more as they give more insights than Blitz ones. Keep up the good work.
As soon as i saw this video by the one and only john bartholomew(A.K.A Best chess teacher ever) 1.Liked the vid before watching 2.Watched the video 3.And gasps cause no words to describe the amazing work you(John) put to make this. Thank you for your hard work and effort : ) #TeamScandi All the best for the pro chess league john
He's back. Excellent Standard video Minnesota Fins. My favorite format by far. You raised a good point about spending so much time about a move your opponent hasn't made yet. Good luck in ol St.Lou. I have a feeling you will get your second norm soon.
I'm glad you're finally back John! Your videos are by far the best out there. No comparison to Nakamura or Hansen stuff or even Dany Rensch. Keep uploading them and good luck with your GM norm!! Greetz Your biggest fan from Vienna
High-level stuff. Very instructive in ways, and in other ways too complex for me as a lower-rated player, but still a lot of fun to try to follow along with instructions!
At 10:20 I would have played Bb5, preparing the tactic e4 exploiting the pin on the knight now that it can’t attack that bishop with check. I’m not sure why you didn’t play it. Either you or I are missing something. Edit: Lol just realized you saw the move and it was his turn anyway! I missed more than I thought 😂
Hey johnny boy i am going to play in my first fide tournament this Saturday any tips for me i am 15 years old and rated about 2000 online and its a u-2300 tournament.
AD Hacking Productions. 15 and 2000 all on your own, you don't need any tips except stay patient and utilize your time. Also probably wouldn't hurt to practice beforehand playing with a friend, to get used to writing down all of your moves.
Some interesting lines there. Looks like black has Nxa2 in response to that, and if white takes the rook his own rook is hanging. If he moves the Rook at a1 to attack the knight, black can play Rd8, attacking the bishop, and if Ba3, for example, black has Nh4, which attacks the white bishop and covers the escape square for the king, thus threatening checkmate if white moves the light squared bishop to the wrong square. But after the complications white might win that knight.
He did overlook it, but turns out we also overlooked something else in our analysis. I looked at it on lichess and the move we both missed was Nd3 (rather than Nxa2). Taking on a2 gets it trapped. And after Nd3 Bxf8 Nxc1 the position is just equal.
A late-night upload but I'm happy to see it! I was thinking about what you asked on twitter about sandbagging and I have to ask, are you going to change your video format or overlay to avoid giving away your/your opponent's name and keep your account anonymous for longer?
Oh right, that's a pretty simple solution. You could even record them all at the same time and space out the postings if you wanted to avoid spamming sub boxes but that would probably be a lot of playing to have to do in one sitting.
I never really accepted that the 2 bishops was such an advantage as modern theory makes out, but games like this could make me change my mind! The knight on g6 is just a spectator...
See my video "Chess is an expression of Pi" I demonstrate the true value of each piece. Bishop 4.082 Knight 2.512 I cover it as well in my short book "True Chess".
Interesting argument, one of the main reasons that a knight was considered the same value as a bishop despite its lesser mobility is that it can operate on black or white squares, while bishops obviously don't. Was this incorporated into your formula at all?
Hey was there not Bd6 on move 24? Forking the knight and rook and if the knight threatens your rook Mr. John you just threaten the knight with the rook?
RandomGamer22 Damn it's nice to see a meme grow from its infancy. I have seen it come to life live, and then seen it grow in popularity, and with this it's officially moved to the phase of branching out with modifications.
Actually quite the opposite If you don’t play Bxc3 you’re playing the nimzo wrong. That’s one of the main plans of the nimzo. It’s all about the fight for the e4 square, and that night is a key observer of e4. In every main line Bxc3 is eventually played.
Take a look at the position at 2:49 bxc3 even gives more control over e4 than Qxc3. I dont know what the computer would recommend but I'd prefer bxc3. also, the eventual c5 wouldnt be effective
Ridics Lol this is a misunderstanding. In your comment you wrote Bxc3 not bxc3. bxc3 can sometimes be played, but that would defeat the purpose of Qc2. There was a US champion whose name escapes me who’d just play bxc3 and not even bother with Qc2. The only problem with bxc3 is that black will usually have an easy target after playing c5 and Rc8 as well as Na5.

You are the best Chess tutor on the internet, both instructive and entertaining. Thanks 😁Brian.
It's been a while John!
Unrelated to the opening of this game, but I would certainly buy a shirt that reads "team scandi" or "1.e4 d5!" if they existed
God, I've missed these !
Always good to see a classical game in the mix. Well played!
Nice to see you back in action! Boy did that computer fan got loud at the end though 😂 best of lucks in St Louis!
Very instructive. Thanks John!
A great video as always johnny!Keep it up my friend☺
Love your videos, such a fantastic resource for players of all levels.
your videos are always learning John thanks

watching and listening increases my skills a lot . Very impressive job! Ty ;)
Your streams are the best. Good luck scoring the GM norm!
Move #24, 14:28, is Bishop D6 forking knight + rook a good move?
Hm I see that would let the knight in on h4...
I was waiting for your standard games :D
best of luck for your tournament john!
Yes John! I love you and standard!
Hey John nice to hear from you again

I love the threat of the windmill

z17seattle Thx mate i will tell my results on the most recent vid of john.
Remember to hit the clock. My first game I forgot two times to hit the clock and lost like fifteen minutes.
Cellkist Thx for pointing this but its not my first tournament its my first fide tournament so i am very well aware of this.
At 10:14, does bg3 work?
bg3 Qb7
e4 Nf6
e5 wins a piece doesn't it?
shreyas rajapurkar Nf4 threatens to take at e2 with check.
Misha Erementchouk if Nf4 then B×f4 dark squared bishop is on g3 now!
Oh, right, wrong board. Then it's 17 Bg3 Qb7 18 e4 Nf6 19 e5 Nd5
Misha Erementchouk Oh wait wait I was actually looking at Q×d7 i just realised Nf6 protects d7 haha. That was stupid xD
0 Dislikes? Impressive, and deserved.
4 now
Thanks for the video John. Good luck in St. Louis.
@14:18 wouldn't you have won a piece if you had forked the knight and rook with your dark squared bishop?
Ben Thorne I thought about that. I calculated Nxa2, Ra1, Rd8, RxN, RxB, Rxa7 and White has not gained much
Some interesting lines there. Michael Smith It was definitely overlooked. He would have at least mentioned it had he seen it
He did overlook it, but turns out we also overlooked something else in our analysis. I looked at it on lichess and the move we both missed was Nd3 (rather than Nxa2). Taking on a2 gets it trapped. And after Nd3 Bxf8 Nxc1 the position is just equal.
Ben Thorne I overlooked 24.Bd6, yes. It seems that 24...Nd3 is a good reply, but I should have seen it nonetheless.

I was thinking about what you asked on twitter about sandbagging and I have to ask, are you going to change your video format or overlay to avoid giving away your/your opponent's name and keep your account anonymous for longer?
When I do the anonymous Climbing the Rating Ladder "from scratch," I'd probably release all the videos at the same time.
Oh right, that's a pretty simple solution. You could even record them all at the same time and space out the postings if you wanted to avoid spamming sub boxes but that would probably be a lot of playing to have to do in one sitting.
Thanks for the game and the upload Johnny B.
What is a simsacon gm on lichess? Where do go to play it?

Finally please more of these again! :)
Watching your chess games help with mine. I am starting to see the bigger picture.

Big fan of you..

i very much enjoyed it ... i would like to see you play the nimzo with black ... :)
Thanks for the information and will and game you are the best
17. Bg3 Qb7 e4 Nf6 e5 Nd5 f4 I thought white had a pretty decent advantage with the Bs and the center
Nice game. Old question for a chess video, but are you now recording at 60 fps? Animation seems much smoother than previous videos.
Yes indeed! Recently changed to 60 fps. Thanks for noticing, Chris :)
Hey! I spectated this game.
Hey was there not Bd6 on move 24? Forking the knight and rook and if the knight threatens your rook Mr. John you just threaten the knight with the rook?
I think black plays Na6 there, which looks horrible but doesn't lose a piece

Thanks for the video!
This is exactly why you dont go for early knight pin and take and keep the bishops for the endgame ...
Isn't Bxc3 in favour of white in the Nimzo?
Actually quite the opposite If you don’t play Bxc3 you’re playing the nimzo wrong. That’s one of the main plans of the nimzo. It’s all about the fight for the e4 square, and that night is a key observer of e4. In every main line Bxc3 is eventually played.

Why not 24.Bd6? Am I missing something?
GodlenOfLords I missed it! Though 24...Nd3 is a viable reply, apparently.

Will do so again when I have time!
