    Postcript: I had a closer look at this with Stockfish, and 28.g4! actually wins for White. I'd recommend playing around with the ending if you're interested, but the main difference is that with 28.g4 White denies Black ...h6-h5, and White can still look to play f2-f4 after g2-g3 preparation. Pretty interesting; I didn't consider anything other than 28.f4 since it looked so natural to push the passed f-pawn and expedite my king centralization with Kg1-f2.

      My first instinct was g4 one pawn controlling 2. But didn't really see how to create a passer like that

      John Bartholomew that is interesting. I guess white to move on 28. was a critical position. Pretty smooth game for 10:0 nonetheless, definitely a fan of this time control.

      Thanks for going back and keeping us updated.
      I, one viewer among many, think I would like it if you did the more careful Stockfish analysis on video. Here's perhaps a good format: at every position in which you or your opponent makes a move other than the top Stockfish suggestion, try to figure out what the Stockfish line leads to. Also, if you think Stockfish's line is something you wouldn't want to play, even after having seen it, think out loud about why. (For example, you're trading while ahead materially in a way that slightly weakens your pawn structure but eliminates all sharpness from the position: a good move for very fallible humans but a waste for much less fallible engines.)
      Maybe doing that at _every_ position is overkill. A useful selection criteria might be the evaluation difference between your move and Stockfish's move. If you at least look at every 1-ply-deep comparison you won't miss 28. g4!
      I think doing something like what I suggest might (a) accelerate your own learning a little; (b) generate more accurate analysis parts (as suggested by this video), thereby (c) accelerating our learning, and also (d) I think it'd be entertaining.
      I see the little bubbles saying "k blunders", "m mistakes", "n missed wins". Is there a way to see what the blunders, mistakes and missed wins were? I'd like to see those too. I believe in machines, as you might be able to tell :-)

      The beginner to chess master series from Chess Network says to lead with your passer, I think the c pawn should have captured also

    Very very instructive transition. That's the perk of playing fast games. You get the chance to experience different kinds of positions in a small time frame, and you are not afraid to try lines that would seem doubious in a longer game

    Getting down to basic pawn endings is a timely reminder of how amazingly deep even the "simplest" positions can be. Thanks for a refreshing video John.

    John! as most of your viewers are players rated under 1600, maybe you could consider making a video series about the basic endgames, starting with K+P endgames? it would be very instructional, knowing even strong players ocasionally mess up those endings, especially under time pressure.

    10 min is my bread and butter time control, but only out of necessity. My morning commute just doesn't give me enough time to comfortably play a 15 min game. I've kind of plateaued though -- rated 1950 on lichess and haven't made much progress in a couple years. Thanks for the video! As an e4 player the ideas should be useful.

    Do you think 30 min no increment, or 15 min 10 sec increment is better? When I switched to 15 min 10 sec it took me a bit to adapt to the time control - maybe because there were tougher opponents playing 15 | 10?

    Sorry I’m not a very good player, but why at move 17 not nF3 nxe4 18. nxe5 and if nxc3 then ng6 forking king and rook?

    • @aleaparicio3284
      @aleaparicio3284 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's an interesting line but I think that at the very least black can play Nxg3 instead of Nxc3 and get the bishop pair. And if you continue to go for the rook they can take yours.
