Hey John! This was one of the very instructive videos of this series. The games where the the opponents are 1600-1900 rated are the most useful for some of us. Such games where there is no outright blunder of pieces but instead passive play or developmental or coordination issues costs the game. Love these!

Also, this time increment (15|10) is the prime set-up for these instructional videos. I definitely like the 5' vids as well, but I feel like a lot goes unsaid in those, especially in the openings

"Climbing the Rating Ladder" are my favorite videos to watch. They can be very instructive, but , they are just fun to watch. The teacher part of John comes out very naturally as you listen and watch these videos. you can tell that his true goal is,in fact, that he wants all of us to play better chess.

Been watching your videos recently. Don't know if I'm learning something or just got lucky but won against a 1420 rating for first time ever. My rating has never been over 1300. He pawn stormed my king side after I castled and I broke open the center, traded queens then stuck a knight in the middle of his king side. I simplified my 2 point advantage to a sole remaining bishop and started taking his remaining pawns. Yea baby!

Hi John, been watching your videos on YT for almost a year. Want to say thanks for sharing your passion. Your channel is a nice combination of entertaining and informative. It's cool to find a move then see you play it, or more frequently watch you find a move and try to follow the calculation and reasoning. The reason I'm commenting now is to say thanks for making the comparison to poker, and pointing to some mental health issues that sometimes accompany gaming. Your reminders to play longer games and not too many per day really resonate, and I'm sure because of this you'll help some folks keep mentally healthy. Cheers and keep up the good work!

Big fan of the Climbing the Rating Ladder and I thought this one had an extremely telling sequence - right around the 22:00 mark before John plays Bd5. I've noticed how he plays with candidate moves until he finds one that he really likes and this was a good example where he was looking at Knight moves but not really finding one and then seemed to just come across the Bd5 move which turned out to really be a great move. I have a tendency to find an intuitive move (and my intuition is no where near as good as JB's) and then play it - while here's a guy with great intuition who plays around with more moves until he finds one that really is better. Very educational sequence. Thanks for doing these John - they really have helped me change how I think about a chess move.

HA! Playing chess in the swimmingpool ... DAT'S living life, Fins!
(And yes: I followed you and listened carefully to your VERY basic and easy to understand instructions, since you/we celebrated 10K sub's on YT! As late as TODAY (6th of March, 2019) I applied some principles from your great videos in the endgame.
Earlier I was a bit "afraid of" or reluctant to exchanging too many pieces, since endgame-theory is ... eeeeh ... comprehensive!
But two connected passed pawns carefully escorted up the board did the "trick" and the hardest part of all: Winning a winning position!
    Danx, John!

"4 games a day" - here I played 400 games in the first week of online chess haha. Quality matters but 4 is grandpa pace.
Fatigue and tilt are factors but any serious poker player easily multitables 24 cash game tables and 50+ sng's.
On the topic of chess - thanks to JB and Eric I'm learning a lot - started at low 800 in 10min blitz on chess.com and currently nearing 1100. Still blundering left and right, falling for traps, butchering the openings, etc., so constantly returning to these videos which are an infinite fountain of knowledge, the more you know, the more new things you learn.

Hi John, great video as always. Can you (or other veteran waters) share some thoughts on how a newbie like myself can determine that the C5 push is good? Your gameplan starting around move 10-12 surrounded completely on that strategy. Is it purely because black is more developed and white's king is not castled? if the white is castled (and knight is developed) would it still be appropriate to play C5? Just want some insights for what else to look for and how to take advantage of a slow opening by opponents. (also other considerations such as why C5 and not E5?)

Question as regard to setting a cap on the number of games played per day: should you set a cap for the number of losses you get? If you're on a bad roll, should you stop playing for a while?

    • @JohnBartholomewChess

Yes, it's not a bad idea to have a stop-loss for losses, too - e.g. 3 in a row. Especially if it affects your mood and decision-making, as it will for many.

This game looked super uncomfortable for white. Definitely didn't look like Senthil1706 had done their nimzo homework, which should be a priority for D4 players, right?

yes but only for people rated above 2000 elo etc... you can do it before but you gain little in the improvement department.
totally not needed for players in this rating range, there is better things to focus on (like the rooks movement in this game for example, white failed to devellop them several times. i would have done it the sooner possible, even if i lose another pawn in the process. white failed to have any attack going whatsoever).
you only need to work on your lines past the basics after reaching a high level.

@@vertsang5424 I play D4 a lot and i'm not rated above 2000 elo and I can pretty much get comfortably out of the opening against any basic reply to D4, especially the nimzo, so I definitely don't agree with this.

John can you play some 10 minute games since this is the default control and I believe the majority of people play it. These longer games are good, but it takes too much time to play 15+10
